Retro-labyrinthine disorder in cases with peripheral facial palsy.

In some previously reported cases, facial palsy, even in Bell's palsy, involved vestibular dysfunction. Vestibular dysfunction in facial palsy is considered to be due to a retro-labyrinthine disorder such as vestibular neuronitis or acoustic neuromas. For the past 9 years we have been using the galvanic body sway test (GBST) routinely for differential diagnosis of the vestibular system. This paper reports GBST detected, retro-labyrinthine disorders in facial palsy. From 1981 to 1989, equilibrium examinations were performed in 33 cases with Bell's palsy and in 12 cases with Hunt's syndrome with

Distribution of glycogen phosphorylase and cytochrome oxidase in the central nervous system of the turtle Trachemys dorbigni.

Glycogen phosphorylase (GP) and cytochrome oxidase (CO) activities were mapped histochemically in the brain of the turtle Trachemys dorbigni … he stratum griseum centrale. In the medulla oblonga both enzymes appear in the reticular, raphe and vestibular nuclei, locus coeruleus and nuclei of cranial nerves. In the cerebellum, the granular and molecular layers, and the deep cerebellar nuclei were positive for both enzymes. The Purkinje cells were only reactive for CO. In the spinal cord, motor and commissur …

Betahistine treatment improves the recovery of static symptoms in patients with unilateral vestibular loss.

Vestibular loss induces a combination of postural, oculomotor, and perceptive symptoms that are compensated over time. The aim of this study … e attributed to an action of betahistine in rebalancing the neuronal activity between contralateral vestibular nuclei.

Spontaneous Nystagmus Violating the Alexander's Law: Neural Substrates and Mechanisms.

Alexander's law states that spontaneous nystagmus increases when looking in the direction of fast-phase and decreases during gaze in slow-phase direction. Disobedience to Alexander's law is occasionally observed in central nystagmus, but the underlying neural circuit mechanisms are poorly understood. In a retrospective analysis of 2,652 patients with posterior circulations stroke, we found a violation of Alexander's law in one or both directions of lateral gaze in 17 patients with lesions of unilateral lateral medulla affecting the vestibular nucleus. Patients with vestibular neuritis served a

Spatial symmetries in vestibular projections to the uvula-nodulus.

The discharge of secondary vestibular neurons relays the activity of the vestibular endorgans, occasioned by movements in three-dimensional … by evaluating its symmetry group. The direct projection from the semicircular canal nerves via the vestibular nuclei to neck motor neurons has a full three-dimensional symmetry group, allowing it to maintain a three-dimensional coordinate frame. However, a projection may embed only a subgroup of the symmetry group of physical space, which incompletely mirrors the …

Vestibulo-ocular reflex pathways in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

We measured the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during head impulses in a patient with right-sided internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Head impulses are rapid, passive, high-acceleration, low-amplitude head rotations in the direction of a particular semicircular canal (SCC). Adduction of the right eye was abnormally slow during right lateral SCC head impulses. The VOR during left posterior SCC impulses was severely deficient in both eyes, but the VOR during left anterior SCC impulses was only slightly deficient. We suggest that the vertical vestibulo-ocular pathways in humans are connected in SCC-plan

[Rare case of brain damage in a primary decompression sickness in a diver].

Pressure disease causes very infrequently multifocal injury to the cerebral hemispheres with resulting organic brain disease. The described case was observed in a diver who after correctly performed decompression without any evident faults in decompressions during several years of diving suffered diffuse, multifocal injury to the cerebral hemispheres and right vestibular nuclei. The authors stress the fact that decompression tables differ in various countries. There is no uniform safety decompression table for the divers. Besides that, such factors as individual sensitivity and resistance of t…

Pharmacotherapy of vestibular and ocular motor disorders, including nystagmus.

We review current pharmacological treatments for peripheral and central vestibular disorders, and ocular motor disorders that impair vision, especially pathological nystagmus. The prerequisites for successful pharmacotherapy of vertigo, dizziness, and abnormal eye movements are the "4 D's": correct diagnosis, correct drug, appropriate dosage, and sufficient duration. There are seven groups of drugs (the "7 A's") that can be used: antiemetics; anti-inflammatory, anti-Ménière's, and anti-migrainous medications; anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, and aminopyridines. A recovery from acute vestibu

Vestibular evoked responses: a new frontier in equilibriometry.

Modern neurootology has proved that many vertigo patients suffer from central dysequilibrium states. As vertigo patients are very frequent amongst our patient population we have to increase our diagnostic as well as therapeutical efforts. Since 1965, eliciting vestibular evoked cortical potentials has been possible. A method of evoked responses based upon computation of several stimulus responses has been used since then. Besides we are also using the frequency analysis of representative epochs of ongoing vestibular-ocular or retino-ocular reactions has been used since then. For diagnostic pur

Medial vestibular nucleus in the guinea-pig: histaminergic receptors. I. An in vitro study.

Antihistaminergic drugs are currently used for the symptomatic treatment of vestibular-related syndromes such as vertigo and motion sickness. We therefore investigated whether histamine could modulate the firing of medial vestibular nuclei neurons (MVNn). Recently, we have demonstrated that different cell types are present among MVNn in guinea-pig brainstem slices. Bath-application of histamine at 10(-4) or 10(-5) M induced a small membrane depolarization accompanied by a slight decrease in membrane resistance and a reversible increase in spontaneous firing in all MVN cell types. These effects…

Pigeon as a model to study peripheral projections from the horizontal semicircular canal vestibular apparatus to a brainstem target immunoreactive for AMPA.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the pigeon (Columba livia) is a good model for evaluating the vestibular system involved with postural maintenance during movement. METHODS: This study maps the brainstem targets of the horizontal ampullary inputs from the vestibular periphery of the pigeon. We used biotin dextran amine (BDA) injection in horizontal semicircular canal (HSCC), immunohistochemistry for GluR2/3 and GluR4 AMPA and computerized histomorphology reconstruction. RESULTS: Our results show the same distribution pattern with ipsilateral projections to vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) from t

Positional and positioning vertigo and nystagmus.

Positional and positioning vertigo and nystagmus syndromes can be attributed to either peripheral or central vestibular dysfunction. The mos … sitional vertigo with nystagmus. The site of the lesion is always near the fourth ventricle and the vestibular nuclei. The most probable explanation for the positional response is a vestibular tone imbalance caused by disinhibition of the vestibular reflexes on perception, eye, head and body position.

The cerebellar projection of the vestibular nerve in the cat.

The projection of the vestibular nerve to the cerebellum of the cat was examined with silver degeneration methods after complete lesions of the vestibular ganglion. The majority of the primary vestibular afferents were traced to the cortex of the ipsilateral nodulus and uvula, relatively fewer entering the ipsilateral flocculus. Fibers were not traced to the paraflocculus, lingula or lateral cerebellar nucleus. A sparse projection to the ipsilateral fastigial nucleus may exist, but it remains equivocal until confirmed with additional methods. Light microscopic examination of plastic sections c

Dicer Deletion in the Ear Can Cut Most Neurons and Their Innervation of Hair Cells to Project to the Ear and the Brainstem.

Dicer is crucial for the generation of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are essential for regulating gene expression and keeping neuronal health. D … l ganglion neurons, fibers from Dicer null mice navigate to the cochlear nuclei and expand into the vestibular nuclei to innervate the caudal brainstem. Beyond a ramification around the CN, no fibers expand to reach the cerebellum, likely due to Pax2 and Foxg1 that cut these neurons. Genetic alterations, such as Dicer deletion, can lead to hearing loss and impairme …

Plasticity mechanisms in vestibular compensation in the cat are improved by an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761).

The effects of administration of an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) on vestibular compensation was studied in unilateral vestibular neurectomized cats. This experimental model of CNS plasticity was investigated by using behavioral tests (postural disorders compensation, locomotor balance recovery), electrophysiological (spontaneous and evoked neck muscle activity) and neurophysiological (spontaneous firing rate recovery of deafferented vestibular cells) recordings, and immunocytochemical methods (synaptic loss and synaptic reoccupation within the deafferented vestibular nuclei).
