Pulmonary endometriosis is a disease in which uterine endometrial cells with stromal components grow in the pulmonary parenchymal tissues or pleura. Surgical resection is considered an effective and radical treatment for pulmonary endometriosis to avoid the adverse effects of long-term hormone therapy in young women of childbearing years with a localized abnormal lesion. We report a case of pulmonary endometriosis with catamenial hemoptysis, an uncommon result of this disease, which was diagnosed histologically and treated successfully by video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical drainage are very important for successful treatment of descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM). However, the surgical techniques used for DNM treatment remain controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and cervical drainage for the management of DNM. Nine patients diagnosed with DNM were treated from May 2001 to April 2004. The mean age of the patients was 51.1+/-15.0 years. VATS and cervical drainage, including debridement and drainage of the mediastinum and pleura, were

A 3-year-old girl with pectus excavatum successfully underwent exploration using video-assisted thoracic surgery. A complete pericardial defect was identified. The lung was kept totally collapsed during the procedure using low-flow (1 L/min), low-pressure (7 mmHg) carbon dioxide insufflation. This technique is expected to be a safe adjunct to thoracoscopic procedures in infants and small children.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was recently described as an approach to clip the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Between May 1994 and May 1996, we performed this procedure on 34 children below 12 years of age (mean 7 years). Thirty-two had an isolated PDA and two had associated small perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD), diagnosed on echocardiography and colour flow mapping. None had pulmonary arterial hypertension. The procedure was successful in 33 (97%) children confirmed by absence of residual shunt on serial echocardiography. Complications in the form of pneumothora

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of the thymus is indicated in the presence of primary thymic diseases such as thymoma. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) offer a minimally invasive approach to thymectomy. However, there is no clear conclusion whether RATS can achieve an equal or even better surgical effect when compared with VATS in treatment of thymoma. We performed this meta-analysis to explore and compare the outcomes of RATS versus VATS for thymectomy in patients with thymoma.

Lung cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related mortality globally; hence, several medical and surgical approaches have been developed for its management. This can be easily recognized with the evolution from the traditional open thoracotomy toward minimally invasive procedures-in particular, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS)-in treating lung cancer. There has been a lot of controversy around the advantages and limitations of these procedures. VATS has been proven to be beneficial in treating early-stage lung cancer. Yet, the restr

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative localization of pulmonary nodules (PNs) is a technical support for video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Failure to accurately localize PNs will necessitate conversion to conventional open chest surgery or transfer to the hybrid operation room, which highlights the importance of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) for identifying lesions. We found that PNs could be better visualized with the help of artificial pleural effusion (APE). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of APE-assisted IOUS for the visualization of PNs.

Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (uVATS) provides excellent postoperative outcomes but limits instrument triangulation, making vascular stapling particularly challenging. We developed a simple "pulley technique" using a loop ligature device to create gentle, multidirectional, and dynamically adjustable traction during pulmonary vessel division. This technique involves passing a vessel tape around the target vessel through a loop ligature device and externalizing the tape to allow controlled retraction. The system stabilizes the vessel, improves the angle for stapler insertion, an

BACKGROUND: Thoracic epidural analgesia is widely considered the gold standard for perioperative pain control in thoracic surgery. Despite its benefits, placement is technically challenging and can result in rare complications such as catheter misplacement into the intrapleural space.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report will discuss a female patient in her late 70s with scoliosis and obesity who underwent robotic-assisted video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for a pulmonary mass. The thoracic epidural catheter placed preoperatively was later directly visualized in the intrapleural space durin

OBJECTIVES: Although there is no consensus on the management of bronchogenic cyst, most surgeons advocate early removal, even in asymptomatic patients. To evaluate the feasibility and safety of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in the management of bronchogenic cysts and long-term follow-up, a retrospective analysis was performed.
METHODS: From January 1995 to April 2013, we retrospectively reviewed the charts of 113 patients who underwent VATS resection of bronchogenic cysts in our institution. Resection of the bronchogenic cysts by VATS was initially performed in patients who had a cys

INTRODUCTION: Most thoracic surgeons encounter atypical cases or unexpected situations that usually lead them to convert minimally invasive surgery to open thoracotomy. But are there other options besides open surgery? The purpose of this study was to suggest a video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) classification system and present tips for the application of VATS to atypical cases or unexpected situations. We have categorized VATS procedures for atypical cases or unexpected situations into two groups: the modification of techniques/instruments and the creation of additional access incisions.

PURPOSE: Pleural empyema (PE) is a collection of purulent material in the pleural space. PE's management in children is a challenge and an inappropriate diagnostic-therapeutic work up can lead to serious short and long-term complications. The aim of this study is to define the correct timing to approach a pediatric PE by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted including pediatric patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopy for pleural empyema between May 2005 and September 2022.
RESULTS: 62 patients were subjected to VATS

Uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive, wound-reducing approach performed mainly in Europe and Asia. This approach is rapidly gaining popularity in Japan. We performed a technique with layer awareness, grasping and dissection of tissue membrane even in uniport VATS as for open thoracotomy or multiport VATS. Interference is a problem with uniport VATS because surgical instruments are inserted and removed through a small incision of 4 cm or less;there-fore, instrument selection is critical. The use of curved forceps ensures more working space and reduced interfe

BACKGROUND: When a clinical context is indeterminate for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), or a chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) pattern is not indicative of typical or probable usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD), surgical lung biopsy should be considered to make a confident diagnosis on the basis of multidisciplinary diagnosis (MDD).
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role and safety of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in patients with ILD.
METHODS: A total of 143 patients with ILD underwent VATS at T

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a myocardial repolarisation disorder caused by cardiac ion channelopathy and one of its common presentations is recurrent syncope. This reduced repolarisation reserve in LQTS can be unmasked by perioperative factors like electrolyte imbalance, drugs, hypothermia and changes in cardiac autonomic tone. We report the anaesthetic management of left thoracoscopic sympathectomy in a 5-year-old child with LQTS and epicardial pacemaker in situ. It is very challenging to isolate the lung on one hand and prevent the predisposition to torsadogenic potential on the other.
