OBJECTIVE: Because of technical obstacles in controlling current spread to adjacent peripheral nerve, eye movements evoked by activation of the otolith organs have not been investigated in detail compared to eye movements evoked by activation of the canal organs. The detection of metric dimensions of laryngeal structures yields valuable information for both clinical and research purposes. The use of a laser projection system combined with a high-speed camera system enables the derivation of absolute spatial dimensions of the larynx. Thoracoscopic diskectomy has been described in adults as an alternative to thoracotomy for access to the anterior spine for correction of scoliosis, but its use in children for correction of spinal deformities has not been reported. Eight patients have undergone video-assisted thoracoscopic diskectomy with fusion before posterior instrumentation. OBJECTIVE: Identification of seizures in neonates is difficult. This study analyses the clinical features of seizures in a cohort of neonates.
METHODOLOGY: The clinical events of 41 neonates referred for investigation of suspected seizures were studied with prolonged video/electroencephalographic (EEG) telemetry.
RESULTS: Sixteen neonates had no seizures recorded; 25 had confirmed seizures, 13 with clinical correlates. Each neonate with electroclinical seizures had paroxysms of abnormal movements in stereotyped patterns. These patterns were consistently found to have electrical correlates. F

Parental perceptions of thirteen patients with DSM III-R borderline personality disorder (BPD) and thirteen without BPD were investigated in video-recorded interviews. Hearing students viewed a videotape featuring positive deaf and hard of hearing role models in a variety of employment settings. Attitudes about the employability of these individuals were measured in a pretest posttest control group design. Management of obstructions in the lacrimal drainage system would be greatly aided by improvements in the ability to visualize the blockages. We describe a new method of observation using miniature fiberoptics to view the entire lacrimal excretory system. We employed flexible endoscopes of fiberoptic bundles with outside diameters of from 0.5 to 0.7 mm. These endoscopes were inserted through the puncta and canaliculi. Sixteen patients were examined. Duffy blood group negative human erythrocytes (FyFy) are resistant to infection by Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian malaria that infects Duffy positive human erythrocytes. The P. knowlesi resistance factor, Duffy negative erythrocytes, occurs in high frequency in West Africa, where the people are resistant to vivax malaria. This suggests that Duffy blood group determinants (Fya or Fyb) may be erythrocyte receptors for P. vivax.
