This study presents the isolation of a novel strain of Dehalococcoides mccartyi, NIT01, which can completely dechlorinate up to 4.0 mM of trichloroethene to ethene via 1,2-cis-dichroroethene and vinyl chloride within 25 days. Strain NIT01 dechlorinated chloroethenes (CEs) at a temperature range of 25-32 °C and pH range of 6.5-7.8. We describe a nickel-catalyzed cyanation reaction of aryl (pseudo)halides that employs butyronitrile as a cyanating reagent instead of highly toxic cyanide salts. A dual catalytic cycle merging retro-hydrocyanation and cross-coupling enables the conversion of a broad array of aryl chlorides and aryl/vinyl triflates into their corresponding nitriles. This new reaction provides a strategically distinct approach to the safe preparation of aryl cyanides, which are essential compounds in agrochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Various novel pyrano [2,3-d]pyrimidines 5 and furopyrano [2,3-d]pyrimidines 7 were synthesized in 80-99% yields via a multicomponent domino Knoevenagel/hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid with an aromatic aldehyde and ethyl vinyl ether/2,3-dihydrofuran in presence of 1 mol% of indium(III) chloride. The reaction also proceeds in aqueous media without using any catalyst, but the yield is comparatively less (65-70%).

We demonstrate a continuous two-step sequence in which sulfenyl chloride is formed, trapped by vinyl acetate, and chlorinated further via a Pummerer rearrangement. These reactions produce a key intermediate in our new approach to the oxathiolane core used to prepare the antiretroviral medicines emtricitabine and lamivudine.
