SIGNIFICANCE: Accommodation/convergence mismatch induced by 3D displays can cause discomfort symptoms such as those induced by accommodation/convergence mismatch in clinical vergence testing. We found that the limits of clear and single vision during vergence tests are very different between 3D and clinical tests. Clinical vergences should not be used as substitutes for measures of vergences in 3D displays.
PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to determine whether the limits of clear and single binocular vision derived from phoropter prism vergence tests match the limits measured in a 3D

This article reviews ocular adverse events (AEs) reported in association with administration of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) in human clinical trials. References reporting ocular toxicity or AEs associated with ADCs were collected using online publication searches. Articles, abstracts, or citations were included if they cited ocular toxicities or vision-impairing AEs with a confirmed or suspected association with ADC administration. Twenty-two references were found citing ocular or vision-impairing AEs in association with ADC administration. All references reported use of ADCs in human clin

Unlike the joints, ocular involvement with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is most often asymptomatic; yet, the inflammation can cause serious morbidity with loss of vision. Scheduled slit-lamp examinations by an ophthalmologist at specific intervals can detect ocular disease early, and prompt treatment can prevent vision loss.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of monovision on dynamic changes in accommodation, pupil responses, spherical aberration and resultant image quality in early presbyopes.
METHODS: Refractive state, pupil size and spherical aberration levels were monitored in nine early presbyopes who exhibited some accommodation (40-50 years, mean = 42 ± 2.37 years) using a Shack-Hartmann aberrometer as a binocularly viewed stimulus stepped closer (from 2 m to 40 cm), or farther (from 40 cm to 2 m). Comparison data from two fully presbyopic (i.e. non-accommodating) subjects (ages 46 and 61 years) and two young

PURPOSE: Convergence insufficiency is a very common disorder that can have significant adverse effects on school performance. When reading, children with this disorder often experience diplopia and headaches. We have recently obtained a rhesus monkey with a naturally occurring impairment of vergence eye movements. In the companion paper, we report behavioral testing that shows a pattern of impairments similar to what clinicians observe in human children with convergence insufficiency, including a receded near point, an exophoria that increases as target distance decreases, and difficulty maint

BACKGROUND: Prior findings suggest that poor readers tend to have poor visual skills, but few reports give full frequency distributions of skill variables, and little data are available for adolescents.
METHODS: Visual skills and visual acuity were measured in 461 students (average age 15.4 years) in 4 California high schools within the same school district. Participating students had been identified by their schools as poor readers. Standard optometric tests and published criteria for "adequate" or "weak" visual skills were used.
RESULTS: In this sample, 80% of the students were found to be

PURPOSE: Accommodative insufficiency (AI) and convergence insufficiency (CI) have been associated with similar symptomology and frequently present at the same time. The severity of symptomology in CI has been linked to the severity of the CI, suggesting a dose-dependent relationship. However, with increasing severity of CI also comes increased comorbidity of AI. AI alone has been shown to cause significant symptomology. We hypothesize that AI drives the symptoms in CI with a comorbid AI condition (CIwAI) and that it is the increased coincidence of AI, rather than increased severity of CI, whic

UNLABELLED: Ocular dominance manifests itself in tests that contain stereo-objects with a disparity beyond Panum's area, e.g. in pointing a finger. These tests force subjects to decide in favour of one or the other eye. In contrast, ocular prevalence is determined using stereo-targets imaged within Panum's areas. These tests allow a graded quantification of the balance between the eyes. Here we present the computer-based Freiburg Ocular Prevalence Test in which stereo-disparate targets have to be aligned, and compare it with the Haase Stereo-balance Test that requires an estimation of the hori

BACKGROUND: Ocular injury is a significant public health concern, which may threaten vision and impose a heavy burden on healthcare systems. In South Korea, understanding the epidemiology of ocular injury is critical for developing effective prevention strategies.
METHODS: This study utilized data from the National Emergency Department Information System from 2016 to 2022. Patients presenting with ocular injury to emergency departments (EDs) nationwide were analyzed. We categorized ED visits based on the types of injury and the risk of vision loss by a modified Delphi process. Multivariate lo

When measuring fixation disparity (an oculomotor vergence error), the question arises as to whether a monocular or binocular calibration is more precise and physiologically more appropriate. In monocular calibrations, a single eye fixates on a calibration target that is taken as having been projected onto the center of the fovea; the corresponding vergence state represents the heterophoria (the resting vergence position), which has no effect on the calibration procedure. In binocular calibrations, a vergence error may be present and may affect the subsequent measurement of the fixation dispari

Ocular toxoplasmosis is a common vision-threatening disease in Indonesia. Diagnosis of this disease is based on characteristic ophthalmoscopic appearances and laboratory findings. Between 1985 and 1989, the authors retrospectively evaluated 41 children under 12 years of age. Thirteen cases had retinal lesions suspected to be toxoplasmosis but the laboratory findings were negative. The remaining 28 children had a total of 41 eyes diagnosed as ocular toxoplasmosis. Of the 41 affected eyes, vision had decreased to finger counting or less in 23 (56%) eyes and to less than 6/15 in 9 (22%) eyes. In

SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the deficits in accommodative responses in convergence insufficiency compared with binocularly normal vision participants can guide targeted therapies to improve accommodative function.
PURPOSE: The first objective is to evaluate the Heath components (defined as blur, disparity, and proximal cues that elicit accommodative responses) in convergence insufficiency participants. This is achieved by analyzing objective accommodative responses to step stimuli, assessing the pre-programmed and feedback mechanisms through peak velocity and final amplitude, respectively. Th

PURPOSE: To consider factors relevant to the design of wavefront-aberration-based customized ablations.
METHODS: Review.
RESULTS: Ablations that seek to eliminate all wavefront aberrations, both second- and higher-order, may not be optimal for all patients. This is particularly the case for presbyopes. Their main requirement will normally be for extended binocular depth-of-focus to yield adequate distance and near vision with good retinal contrast at lower spatial frequencies, rather than the highest levels of acuity and modulation transfer function at a single distance. For many presbyopes,

Previous experiments that have compared monocular vernier acuity in amblyopic, monocularly blind, and normal binocular subjects have been confined to the center of the retina. Based on brain changes that accompany the early disruption of form vision in one eye, monocularly blind subjects (that is, those who have completely lost the ability to process form vision in one eye) and amblyopic subjects are expected to have better vernier acuity in their normally functioning eye than subjects with normal binocular vision. Results from such studies have been ambiguous. This experiment was set up to st

Pitvipers have four 'eyes': two visual eyes and two flask-shaped facial pits resembling a pinhole camera that images environmental surface temperatures using thermal radiation. Pit apertures define the sharpness and brightness of the thermal image, and vary substantially among species, suggesting adaptation to specific habitats. Thermal radiation enters the facial pit through its external aperture and heats a suspended membrane covered with thousands of temperature sensors that are sensitive to minute changes. Sensor responses are preprocessed and mapped onto the tectum, where vision, sound an

The sun floods our environment with a sea of electromagnetic radiation. The largest proportion of this spectrum that reaches the ground falls within the visible spectrum, which is termed 'light'. The light that reaches the earth is structured by the physical laws that determine how the visible spectrum interacts with surfaces, materials, and objects. In order to understand the different forms of optical structure generated in natural environments, we need to understand the physics that give rise to that structure.
