Retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease characterized by abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels in the eyes of premature infants. It is especially severe in the tiniest, most premature infants, whose chances of survival have increased with advances in neonatal care. Infants in whom ROP is diagnosed during the perinatal period are at risk for ocular abnormalities and for deficits in visual function. This article reviews the classification of ROP, summarizes current recommendations for screening of ROP in the perinatal period, and describes recent findings with respect to ocular and visu

Development of a target product profile for artificial intelligence in diabetic eye screening in England: a modified Delphi consensus study.

Artificial intelligence (AI) health-care technologies offer a means of addressing the growing gap between health-care capacity and demand. However, few technologies have met the complex requirements of health-care systems for adoption. Diabetic eye screening (DES) in England exemplifies the difficulty of understanding these requirements and translating them into real-world implementation decisions. This Review responds to a recognised policy need to develop a target product profile (TPP) for a DES AI system for use in England. The TPP outlines the requirements of the English health-care system

Screening cognitive impairment in patients with atrial fibrillation: A deep learning model based on retinal fundus photographs.

BACKGROUND: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have a higher risk of cognitive impairment (CI). However, complexity of CI diagnosis and lack of simple screening approaches limited early screening and intervention of CI in AF patients. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to develop deep learning models based on fundus photographs for easy screening of CI in AF patients. METHODS: From May 2021 to April 2023, patients who completed fundus examination and cognitive function evaluation in the Chinese Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study were included. The training and validation sets were randomly split

Screening in child health.

Screening programmes in child health have evolved on the basis of individual enthusiasm and professional consensus, rather than being based on objective evidence of benefit. Three reviews have been carried out in the UK over the past 10 years. The only programmes which show robust evidence of effectiveness are those for PKU and hypothyroidism. The value of screening for hearing loss and vision defects is widely accepted, but there are many unresolved issues. Programmes for detection of congenital dislocation of the hip, congenital heart disease and growth disturbances are of doubtful value. Ea

Profile of peripheral visual anomalies in the disabled reader.

A vision screening was performed on 80 disabled readers. The purpose of this screening was to examine the incidence of specific peripheral visual anomalies so as to isolate those visual anomalies most commonly found in this population, thus forming a visual profile of the disabled reader. The results of this vision screening indicate the same basic visual profile found by numerous other investigators; i.e., a significantly higher percentage of failures in tests of accommodation, fusion, and oculomotor skills relative to visual acuity, refractive error and ocular pathology, as well as the need …

Guidelines on Diabetic Eye Care: The International Council of Ophthalmology Recommendations for Screening, Follow-up, Referral, and Treatment Based on Resource Settings.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global epidemic and affects populations in both developing and developed countries, with differing health care and resource levels. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major complication of DM and a leading cause of vision loss in working middle-aged adults. Vision loss from DR can be prevented with broad-level public health strategies, but these need to be tailored to a country's and population's resource setting. Designing DR screening programs, with appropriate and timely referral to facilities with trained eye care professionals, and using cost-effective treatment fo

Color vision impairment in workers exposed to neurotoxic chemicals.

Recent research shows that occupational exposure to several solvents, metals and other industrial chemicals can impair color vision in exposed workers. Occupation-related color vision impairment usually results in blue-yellow color discrimination loss or, less frequently, a combination of blue-yellow and red-green loss. The eyes may be unequally involved, and the course is variable depending on exposure and other factors. The pathogenesis of occupational color vision loss has not been elucidated; it may be due to, e.g. a direct action of neurotoxins on receptors, possibly on the cone's membran

Deficits in color detection in patients with Alzheimer disease.

Deficits in color vision and related retinal changes hold promise as early screening biomarkers in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to determine a cut-off score that can screen for Alzheimer's dementia using a novel color vision threshold test named the red, green, and blue (RGB) modified color vision plate test (RGB-vision plate). We developed the RGB-vision plate consisting of 30 plates in which the red and green hues of Ishihara Plate No.22 were sequentially adjusted. A total of 108 older people participated in the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Ishihara plate, and
