Chronic interstitial lung abnormalities have been described in sickle cell disease (SCD) and attributed to repetitive episode of acute chest syndrome. We report a series of 22 cases of diffuse cystic lung disease in SCD with a case-control study to hunt for mechanism. Five patients with chronic respiratory failure from neuromuscular disease and symptomatic worsening nocturnal hypoventilation were treated with nocturnal ventilation. From 1973 to 1974, a longitudinal study of pulmonary function in 113 Utah copper smelter workers reported significant declines in FVC and FEV1 related to sulfur dioxide exposure. In 1980, we performed a 7-yr follow-up study, finding significant increases in FVC and FEV1. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included hospitalized patients with ALS who underwent LVR from 2015 to 2020.
