Oral vitamin B12 versus intramuscular vitamin B12 for vitamin B12 deficiency: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B(12) deficiency is common, increasing with age. Most people are treated in primary care with intramuscular vitamin B(12). Several studies have reported equal efficacy of oral administration of vitamin B(12). OBJECTIVES: We set out to identify randomized controlled trial (RCT) evidence for the effectiveness of oral versus intramuscular vitamin B(12) to treat vitamin B(12) deficiency. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review searching databases for relevant RCTs. Outcomes included levels of serum vitamin B(12), total serum homocysteine and methylmalonic acid, haemoglobin

[Vitamin levels in children with latent iron deficiency].

Providing with ascorbic acid, vitamins A and E, thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine was biochemically investigated in 108 children aged from 9 to 15 years. Significant disorders in the providing with all these vitamins were observed, the highest deficiency of ascorbic acid and pyridoxine being recorded. Vitamin deficiency in children was expressed as polyhypovitaminosis. Children with latent iron deficiency are less provided with vitamins than normal children, and the incidence of this or that vitamin deficiency in them is higher. The data obtained have evidenced that normalization of the body

High Dose Vitamin B6 Reduces Depression Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest that vitamin B6 has potential as an antidepressant. It plays a crucial coenzyme role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and dopamine, which are central to mood regulation, and it has been shown that increasing availably of vitamin B6 above normal levels increases concentrations of serotonin and GABA. Furthermore, epidemiological evidence points to vitamin B6 deficiency as a risk factor for depression, and to high vitamin B6 levels as protective. Therefore, we asked whether taking 100 mg vitamin B6 as

B vitamins in dermatology.

B vitamins play a pivotal role in cellular metabolism and erythrocyte synthesis, serving as essential water-soluble nutrients. Rapid excretion through the urinary system prevents their accumulation, thus mitigating potential toxicity. With minimal storage in the body, the levels of these vitamins are primarily influenced by recent dietary intake, especially in healthy individuals. The B vitamin group comprises eight distinct vitamins: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid (B9), and cobalamin (B12). In developed nations, B-c

Effect of Vitamin B Supplementation on Cognitive Function in the Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B deficiency and elevated total plasma homocysteine have been associated with cognitive impairment and dementia in later life, although it is unknown if treatment with these vitamins improves cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to examine the efficacy of treatment with vitamin B12, vitamin B6, or folic acid in slowing cognitive decline amongst older adults with and without cognitive impairment. METHODS: We summarized findings from previous systematic reviews of clinical trials and performed a new systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 Engl

Is oral vitamin B(12) therapy effective for vitamin B(12) deficiency in patients with prior ileocystoplasty?

PURPOSE: We previously identified vitamin B(12) deficiency as a potential long-term consequence in pediatric patients with prior ileocystoplasty despite adequate preservation of terminal ileum. Vitamin B(12) deficiency can result in hematological and neurological deficits, of which some are irreversible. Deficiency discovered after ileocystoplasty is purportedly due to B(12) malabsorption since the principal absorption site is ileum. B(12) deficiency due to malabsorption is typically treated with intramuscular injection to ensure adequate treatment. We determined whether oral vitamin B(12) sup

Phenome-wide association study of genetically predicted B vitamins and homocysteine biomarkers with multiple health and disease outcomes: analysis of the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Although a number of health outcomes such as CVDs, metabolic-related outcomes, neurological disorders, pregnancy outcomes, and cancers have been identified in relation to B vitamins, evidence is of uneven quality and volume, and there is uncertainty about putative causal relationships. OBJECTIVES: To explore the effects of B vitamins and homocysteine on a wide range of health outcomes based on a large biorepository linking biological samples and electronic medical records. METHODS: First, we performed a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) to investigate the associations of ge

A case series of low-level laser therapy treatment in patients with peripheral facial palsy.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Facial Palsy (PFP) is a facial paralysis with various etiologies, including idiopathic causes (Bell's palsy), infections, trauma, and genetic factors. Traditional treatments involve antiviral medications, corticosteroids, and physiotherapy. However, new therapies, such as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), are emerging with promising results. METHODS: This case series reports on two patients with PFP treated with LLLT combined with Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 supplementation. The first case involved a 52-year-old female with PFP due to a viral infection. The second case was a

High-dose vitamin B supplementation for persistent visual deficit in multiple sclerosis: a pilot study.

The aim of this study is to investigate the potential neuroprotective effect of high-doses vitamins B1, B6 and B12 in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and persistent visual loss after acute optic neuritis (AON). Sixteen patients (20 eyes) diagnosed with RRMS and visual permanent disability following AON were enrolled for the present open, pilot study. Each patient was treated with oral high-doses 300 mg of vitamin B1, 450 mg of vitamin B6 and 1,500 mcg of vitamin B12, as add-on treatment to concomitant disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for consecutive 90 days. Management of Ocular Neuropathic Pain With Vitamin B12 Supplements: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: To report the case of a 28-year-old patient with persistent bilateral burning pain and foreign body sensation in both eyes for the past 1 year. The patient showed a poor response to 0.05% cyclosporine eye drops and frequent instillations of artificial tears. Ocular examination showed few superficial punctate epithelial defects, well-positioned laser in situ keratomileusis (performed 5 years ago with symptomless recovery) flaps, and clear interfaces bilaterally, with a tear film breakup time of 7 and 8 seconds in the right and left eyes, respectively. The results of Schirmer tests, con

Metabolic vitamin B12 deficiency: a missed opportunity to prevent dementia and stroke.

The purpose of this narrative review is to highlight insights into the importance and frequency of metabolic vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency, reasons why it is commonly missed, and reasons for the widespread but mistaken belief that treatment of B12 deficiency does not prevent stroke or improve cognitive function. Metabolic B12 deficiency is common, being present in 10%-40% of the population; is frequently missed; is easily treated; and contributes importantly to cognitive decline and stroke in older people. Measuring serum B12 alone is not sufficient for diagnosis; it is necessary to measure hol

Haematological implications of folate food fortification.

Reports from some Western countries indicate that mandatory folate food fortification (FFF) has substantially reduced the prevalence of folate deficiency, leading to calls for folate testing following FFF to be limited to specific indications such as macrocytic anaemia. This is premature for low-income countries, where folate deficiency is predominantly the result of poor intake coupled with the increasing demand in pregnancy. There is also evidence that HIV infection is prejudicial to folate nutrition, and low-income HIV-infected women and their offspring could be among the most susceptible t

[Treatment response in vitamin B12 deficiency depends on the chosen vitamin B12 preparation].

In Denmark, patients with vitamin B12 deficiency are usually treated for life with either Betolvex or Vibeden given as injections every third month. This case report describes a patient who received injections with vitamin B12 prescribed in Germany. The drug prescribed was not available in Denmark; hence the treatment was unsuccessful after the patient returned to Denmark. This led to extensive diagnosing before the cause for the inadequate treatment was found. It illustrates that different vitamin B12 drugs may result in different treatment outcomes, and that caution should be taken when trea
