Some new anatomic data on the laryngeal cartilage framework have been obtained for the biomechanical modeling of the larynx. This study attempted to define and measure some biomechanically important morphometric features of the laryngeal framework, including both the human and the canine laryngeal frameworks, because the canine larynx has been frequently used as an animal model in gross morphology and in physiological experiments. The larynges of 9 men, 7 women, and 9 dogs were harvested and dissected after death. Linear and angular geometric measurements on the thyroid cartilage, the cricoid

Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can result in impairment of all three laryngeal functions. The RLN is capable of regeneration, but laryngeal functions in cases of severe injury remain impaired. This permanent impairment is caused by either incomplete regeneration and/or occurrence of laryngeal synkinesis. Laryngeal reinnervation can be approached either nonselectively, focusing on nerve reconstruction, or selectively, focusing on separate target muscle reinnervation. Nonselective reinnervation comprises anastomosis to the mainstem of the RLN leading to reinnervation of both abduc

Recent evidence suggests that the lung-thorax system functions as a constant pressure source during phonation. However, previous animal models used a constant flow source. This article describes an in vivo canine model that maintains a constant subglottic pressure during phonation to more closely simulate the pulmonary system. At any given subglottic pressure, increasing levels of recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation resulted in a significant rise in resistance followed by a plateau. Increasing levels of superior laryngeal nerve stimulation, however, produced no significant change in glottal

Sound for the human voice is produced via flow-induced vocal fold vibration. The vocal folds consist of several layers of tissue, each with differing material properties. Normal voice production relies on healthy tissue and vocal folds, and occurs as a result of complex coupling between aerodynamic, structural dynamic, and acoustic physical phenomena. Voice disorders affect up to 7.5 million annually in the United States alone and often result in significant financial, social, and other quality-of-life difficulties. Understanding the physics of voice production has the potential to significant

Twenty-four adult dogs were used for the experiments. Cricothyroid approximation was performed in 17 of them. The bilateral external branches of the superior laryngeal nerves were severed in advance and their phonation under light anaesthesia investigated preoperatively, immediately and 6-20 weeks after operation by sound spectrum in all animals. Following the operation, the animals with cricothyroid approximation got higher pitch and lesser hoarseness than the controls, but would never reach the preoperative mean value. It is considered that the effect of cricothyroid approximation in raising

Many animals communicate acoustically in large social aggregations. Among the best studied are frogs, in which males form large breeding choruses where they produce loud vocalizations to attract mates. Although chorus noise poses significant challenges to communication, it also possesses features, such as comodulation in amplitude fluctuations, that listeners may be evolutionarily adapted to exploit in order to achieve release from masking. This study investigated the extent to which the benefits of comodulation masking release (CMR) depend on overall noise level in Cope's gray treefrog (Hyla

We investigated the effects of prior stress on rats' responses to 50-kHz (appetitive) and 22-kHz (aversive) ultrasonic playback. Rats were treated with 0, 1, 6 or 10 shocks (1 s, 1.0 mA each) and were exposed to playbacks the following day. Previous findings were confirmed: (i) rats moved faster during 50-kHz playback and slowed down after 22-kHz playback; (ii) they all approached the speaker, which was more pronounced during and following 50-kHz playback than 22-kHz playback; (iii) 50-kHz playback caused heart rate (HR) increase; 22-kHz playback caused HR decrease; (iv) the rats vocalized mor

Functional electrical stimulation is a developing methodology that shows significant potential in the management of peripheral neuromuscular deficits. Potential applications in the head and neck area, including control of bilateral vocal fold paralysis and spasmodic dysphonia, have recently been explored. Despite promising early results, very little is known about the mechanisms of action or the long-term effects of electrical stimulation on human laryngeal function. Recent development of implantable vagal nerve stimulators as a method to control intractable seizures in individuals who have no

Although laryngeal morphology often reflects adaptations for vocalization, the structural consequences of selection for particular aspects of vocal behavior remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of increased ultrasonic calling in pups on the adult larynx morphology in selectively bred rat lines. Laryngeal morphology was assessed using multiple techniques: mineralized cartilage volumes were compared in 3D-models derived from microCT scans, internal structure was compared using clearing and staining procedures combined with microscopy, cellular structure was compar

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by impairments in social abilities and communication. Studying appropriate animal models can enhance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these conditions, potentially leading to improved treatment and intervention strategies. Modeling impairments in linguistic development and vocal communication caused by autism had been a challenging goal for a long time. Prenatal valproic acid (VPA) treatment has been successfully used to induce ASD-like behavioral symptoms in several vertebrat

BACKGROUND: Pup-dam ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are essential to cognitive and socio-emotional development. In autism and Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), disruptions in pup-dam USV communication hint at a possible connection between abnormal early developmental USV communication and the later emergence of communication and social deficits.
METHODS: Here, we gathered USVs from PND 10 FXS pups during a short period of separation from their mothers, encompassing animals of all possible genotypes and both sexes (i.e., Fmr1-/y vs. Fmr1+/y males and Fmr1+/+, +/-, and -/- females). This allowed compar

BACKGROUND: The FOXP2 gene encodes a transcription factor responsible for the development of neural structures involved in vocalization in vertebrates. Animal models have proven critical in the study of FOXP2 gene expression, although a comparative interspecies analysis of brainstem structures is understudied. This study evaluates the expression of FOXP2 protein within the brainstem of rats, rhesus monkeys, and humans.
METHOD: Brainstems of one rat, two rhesus monkeys, and one human were harvested. Immunohistochemistry for FOXP2 was performed, followed by imaging and centroid analysis to iden

The single dose toxicity studies of montirelin hydrate (NS-3), a new drug for the treatment of disturbance of consciousness, were conducted in Slc:ddY mice, Slc:SD rats, and beagle dogs of both sexes. The drug was administered intravenously (i.v.) to mice, rats and dogs, and intramuscularly (i.m.) to mice and rats. The animals were observed for 14 days after administration. LD50 values were more than 500 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg in mice and rats, respectively, by the i.v. route, and more than 20 mg/kg in both animal species by the i.m. route. In dogs, the minimum lethal dose was more than 200 mg/kg

Although numerous studies have implicated stress in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, less is known about how the effects of stress interact with genetic, developmental, and/or environmental determinants to promote disease progression. In particular, it has been proposed that in humans, stress exposure in adolescence could combine with a predisposition towards increased stress sensitivity, leading to prodromal symptoms and eventually psychosis. However, the neurobiological substrates for this interaction are not fully characterized. Previous work in our lab has demonstrated that rats born

This paper proposes a modular architecture for articulatory synthesis from a gestural specification comprising relatively simple models for the vocal tract, the glottis, aero-acoustics, and articulatory control. The vocal tract module combines a midsagittal statistical analysis articulatory model, derived by factor analysis of air-tissue boundaries in real-time magnetic resonance imaging data, with an αβ model for converting midsagittal section to area function specifications. The aero-acoustics and glottis models were based on a software implementation of classic work by Maeda. The articulato

Animal acoustic signals play seminal roles in mate attraction and regulation of male spacing, maintenance of pairbonds, localization of hosts by parasites, and feeding behavior. Among vertebrate signals, it is becoming clear that no single stereotyped signal feature reliably elicits species-specific behavior, but rather, that a suite of characters is involved. Within the largely nocturnal clade of anuran amphibians, the dart-poison frog, Epipedobates femoralis, is a diurnal species that physically and vigorously defends its calling territory against conspecific intruders. Here we report that p
