Gulf War veterans and hemifacial microsomia.

BACKGROUND: Concerns have been raised that more infants with Goldenhar syndrome were born to U.S. Gulf War veterans than expected. Goldenhar syndrome is considered a variant of the malformation hemifacial microsomia (HFM). We used data collected from a case-control study of HFM to estimate risk in relation to parental military service and, in particular, Gulf War service. METHODS: Cases with HFM who were three years old or younger were identified at craniofacial clinics in 24 U.S. cities and matched to controls by age and pediatrician. The mothers of 232 cases and 832 controls were interviewe

The longitudinal associations between attitudes to aging and attachment insecurities among combat veterans.

For combat veterans, the trauma of war can have lasting effects, that may later extend to attitudes toward one's own aging (ATOA). The present study sought to examine whether attachment insecurities may help to predict ATOA in later life, while also exploring the moderating role of combat exposure concerning the effects of attachment insecurities on subsequent ATOA. A cohort of 171 veterans of the Israeli 1973 Yom Kippur War (mean age = 68.4, SD = 5.1) were interviewed in 1991 (Time 1; T1) and again in 2018 (Time 2; T2). The present study examined the moderating role of combat exposure, within

The Role of Spirituality and Rumination in the Occurrence of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Posttraumatic Growth Among Ukrainians Exposed to War Trauma Studying in Poland.

Ukrainian citizens are exposed to war-associated trauma. While such exposure typically has negative consequences, reflected in the form of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it can also have positive ones, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). These outcomes are influenced by various factors including rumination about traumatic experiences and personal resources such as spirituality. The aim of the study was to examine the relationships between spirituality, rumination and the consequences of exposure to war trauma among Ukrainian citizens studying in Poland, reflected in the form of PTSD and

Primary Care Considerations for Elderly U.S. Veterans of World War II and the Korean War: A Narrative Review.

Many of the United States' more than 18 million veterans obtain healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Veterans Health Administration system; however, recent legislative changes have expanded veterans' access to non-VA care in their communities, particularly for those who do not live near VA medical centers. Veterans are seen by physicians in outpatient practice across the United States and are admitted to non-VA hospitals; this is particularly salient for older veterans, who may require a more frequent and high level of care. We present a review of characteristics of U.S.

War drives forest fire risks and highlights the need for more ecologically-sound forest management in post-war Ukraine.

Since 24 February 2022, Ukraine has experienced full-scale military aggression initiated by the Russian Federation. The war has had a major negative impact on vegetation cover of war-affected regions. We explored interactions between pre-war forest management and the impacts of military activities in three of the most forested Ukrainian areas of interest (AOI), affected by the war. These were forests lying between Kharkiv and Luhansk cities (AOI 'East'), forests along the Dnipro River delta (AOI 'Kherson'), and those of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (AOI CEZ). We used Sentinel satellite imagery

Experimental Models of Gulf War Illness, a Chronic Neuropsychiatric Disorder in Veterans.

Gulf War illness (GWI) is a chronic multifaceted condition with debilitating pain and fatigue, as well as sleep, behavioral, and cognitive impairments in war veterans. Currently, there is no effective treatment or cure for GWI; therefore, there is a critical need to develop experimental models to help better understand its mechanisms and interventions related to GWI-associated neuropsychiatric disorders. Chemical neurotoxicity appears to be one cause of GWI, and its symptoms manifest as disruptions in neuronal function. However, the mechanisms underlying such incapacitating neurologic and psyc

Impact of prenatal and childhood adversity effects around World War II on multimorbidity: results from the KORA-Age study.

BACKGROUND: While risk factors for age-related diseases may increase multimorbidity (MM), early life deprivation may also accelerate the development of chronic diseases and MM. METHODS: This study explores the prevalence and pattern of MM in 65-71 year-old individuals born before, during, and after World War II in Southern Germany based on two large cross-sectional KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg) -Age studies in 2008/9 and 2016. MM was defined as having at least two chronic diseases, and birth periods were classified into five phases: pre-war, early war, late war,

Predictors of violence against children in Tamil families in northern Sri Lanka.

Children living in post-conflict settings are not only at high risk of developing war-related psychopathology but also of experiencing maltreatment within their families. However, little is known about the mechanisms of the relationship between war and family violence. In order to investigate the variables associated with the experience and perpetration of child maltreatment, we conducted a two-generational study with Tamil families in the North of Sri Lanka, a region affected by war and Tsunami. We interviewed children and the corresponding family dyads and triads with 359 children, 122 mothe

Understanding mental health needs in Ukraine: protocol for a longitudinal survey of mental health in children and caregivers during the war in Ukraine.

Background: The full invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022 has created a situation of sustained stress for the Ukrainian population. Initial surveys indicate that Ukrainians have experienced elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since the onset of the war. Most research has focused on adults and there is relatively less study on children and adolescent mental health. Research that has been conducted is limited by (a) predominant reliance on parent reports of children's mental health, (b) biased sampling, (c) lack of integrated child and caregiver repor

Childhood maltreatment and post-deployment psychological distress: The indirect role of emotional numbing.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment is an increasingly established predictor of psychological problems. However, limited research addresses pathways though which childhood maltreatment influences the mental health of military personnel following deployment. The current study investigated the direct, and indirect through emotional numbing, relations between childhood maltreatment and psychological distress of recently deployed veterans. METHOD: For a sample of 131 predominantly White, male Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom members of U.S. Army National Guard and Reserve units, a

Impact of war and forced displacement on children's mental health-multilevel, needs-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches.

The infliction of war and military aggression upon children must be considered a violation of their basic human rights and can have a persistent impact on their physical and mental health and well-being, with long-term consequences for their development. Given the recent events in Ukraine with millions on the flight, this scoping policy editorial aims to help guide mental health support for young victims of war through an overview of the direct and indirect burden of war on child mental health. We highlight multilevel, need-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches to regaining and sustaining o

A mental health needs assessment of children and adolescents in post-conflict Liberia: results from a quantitative key-informant survey.

Between 1989 and 2004, Liberia experienced a devastating civil war that resulted in widespread trauma with almost no mental health infrastructure to help citizens cope. In 2009, the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare collaborated with researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital to conduct a rapid needs assessment survey in Liberia with local key informants (n = 171) to examine the impact of war and post-war events on emotional and behavioral problems of, functional limitations of, and appropriate treatment settings for Liberian youth aged 5-22. War exposure and post-conflict se…

Longitudinal PTSD trajectories before and after the October 7, 2023, terror attacks: A nationwide study of Israeli adults.

BACKGROUND: Existing research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development over time covers brief periods predominantly among military personnel, rather than civilians, and baseline measurements from before traumatic experiences are rarely available. This longitudinal study examined PTSD trajectories among Israeli civilians before and after the October 7, 2023, terror attack, exploring their associations with current and previous trauma. METHODS: Data included 1,231 Israeli Jewish adults from a quasi-representative sample surveyed at four time points: January 2018, April 2022, Decembe

Long-term ocular complications of sulfur mustard in the civilian victims of Sardasht, Iran.

Eyes are very sensitive to sulfur mustard (SM) gas because they have wet surfaces. The severity of ocular damage is related to the dose and duration of exposure to SM, and recovery may take up to several years after the exposure. We conducted a large cohort study to evaluate the ocular signs and symptoms of 367 chemical war victims in Sardasht City, Iran, 20 years after their exposure to mustard gas. The results of these chemical war victims (i.e., the cases) were compared with the results for 128 unaffected civilians (i.e., the controls). Photophobia was the most significant symptom in the ca
