On December 14, 1799, 3 prominent physicians-Craik, Brown, and Dick-gathered to examine America's first president, George Washington. He was complaining of severe throat symptoms and was being treated with bloodletting, blistering, and enemas. Dick advised performing an immediate tracheotomy to secure the airway. Both Craik and Brown were not keen on trying tracheotomy and overruled that proposal. Washington was not involved in making that decision. He most likely had acute epiglottitis that proved to be fatal at the end. If Dick had prevailed, a tracheotomy could have saved Washington's life.…

PURPOSE: We analyzed the patients served by the University of Washington Adult Genetic Medicine Clinic (UWAGMC) over a 42-year period to determine how clinical services have changed and to evaluate the contributing factors.

BACKGROUND: American women are using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for long-term disease prevention, as well as symptom control, in increasing numbers. Our study examined the role of prevention in women's decisions to initiate HRT and their intended duration of therapy.
METHODS: We analyzed the mailed survey responses of 2023 women aged 50 to 70 years from the practices of 46 physicians in the Puget Sound region for knowledge and attitudes about HRT, current use, and intended duration of therapy. Multiple logistic regression was used to model current HRT use and intended treatment length.

We examined possible risk factors for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in women by comparing newly diagnosed cases (N = 61) ascertained from five Washington DC area hospitals with neighborhood controls (N = 122) identified using a random digit dialing technique. In March 1991, four cyanide poisonings were identified in Washington State. Three of these, one nonfatal and two fatal, were directly linked to the consumption of capsules of Sudafed-12 hour cold relief capsules. This article presents the details of these cases including the chronology, causes of death, autopsy and toxicological findings. We surveyed 940 Washington state waste industry workers to evaluate occupational exposure to potentially infectious materials (response rate 47 percent). Only 26 percent were trained specifically to deal with safety hazards associated with medical waste. Nearly 93 million adults in the United States (US) have uncontrolled hypertension, a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Increasing the use of fixed-dose combination antihypertensives (FDCs) has been proposed as a strategy to improve hypertension control. In 2016/2017, Washington State experienced a mumps outbreak despite high childhood vaccination rates, with cases more frequently detected among school-aged children and members of the Marshallese community.
