A Multi-Modal Under-Sensorized Wearable System for Optimal Kinematic and Muscular Tracking of Human Upper Limb Motion.

Wearable sensing solutions have emerged as a promising paradigm for monitoring human musculoskeletal state in an unobtrusive way. To increase the deployability of these systems, considerations related to cost reduction and enhanced form factor and wearability tend to discourage the number of sensors in use. In our previous work, we provided a theoretical solution to the problem of jointly reconstructing the entire muscular-kinematic state of the upper limb, when only a limited amount of optimally retrieved sensory data are available. However, the effective implementation of these methods in a

Waveform Similarity Analysis Using Graph Mining for the Optimization of Sensor Positioning in Wearable Seismocardiography.

OBJECTIVE: A major concern with wearable devices aiming to measure the seismocardiogram (SCG) signal is the variability of SCG waveform with the sensor position and a lack of a standard measurement procedure. We propose a method to optimize sensor positioning based on the similarity among waveforms collected through repeated measurements. METHOD: we design a graph-theoretical model to evaluate the similarity of SCG signals and apply the proposed methodology to signals collected by sensors placed in different positions on the chest. A similarity score returns the optimal measurement position b

Synchronized wearables for the detection of haemodynamic states via electrocardiography and multispectral photoplethysmography.

Cardiovascular health is typically monitored by measuring blood pressure. Here we describe a wireless on-skin system consisting of synchronized sensors for chest electrocardiography and peripheral multispectral photoplethysmography for the continuous monitoring of metrics related to vascular resistance, cardiac output and blood-pressure regulation. We used data from the sensors to train a support-vector-machine model for the classification of haemodynamic states (resulting from exposure to heat or cold, physical exercise, breath holding, performing the Valsalva manoeuvre or from vasopressor ad

Colorimetric sweat analysis using wearable hydrogel patch sensors for detection of chloride and glucose.

Sweat is a promising non-invasive biofluid that can provide valuable insights into the physiological state of the human body. However, a major obstacle to analyzing sweat in real-time is the fabrication of simple, fast-acting, accurate, and low-cost sensing constructs. To address this challenge, we introduced easily-prepared wearable hydrogel sensors that can be placed on the skin and used colorimetric techniques to assess sweat analytes without invasive procedures. Two typical sweat sensors, chloride ion (Cl-) responsive patches for cystic fibrosis (CF) analysis and glucose response patches f

Agreement between Optoelectronic System and Wearable Sensors for the Evaluation of Gait Spatiotemporal Parameters in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

The use of wearable sensors for calculating gait parameters has become increasingly popular as an alternative to optoelectronic systems, currently recognized as the gold standard. The objective of the study was to evaluate the agreement between the wearable Opal system and the optoelectronic BTS SMART DX system for assessing spatiotemporal gait parameters. Fifteen subjects with progressive supranuclear palsy walked at their self-selected speed on a straight path, and six spatiotemporal parameters were compared between the two measurement systems. The agreement was carried out through paired da

Detecting negative myoclonus during long-term home measurements using wearables.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a feasible method for the detection of negative myoclonus (NM) through long-term home measurements in patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy type 1. METHODS: The number and duration of silent periods (SP) associated with NM were detected during a 48 h home recording using wearable surface electromyography (EMG) sensors. RESULTS: A newly developed algorithm was able to find short (50-69 ms), intermediate (70-100 ms), and long (101- 500 ms) SPs from EMG data. Negative myoclonus assessed by the algorithm correlated significantly with the vid

A Survey on Wearable Sensors for Mental Health Monitoring.

Mental illness, whether it is medically diagnosed or undiagnosed, affects a large proportion of the population. It is one of the causes of extensive disability, and f not properly treated, it can lead to severe emotional, behavioral, and physical health problems. In most mental health research studies, the focus is on treatment, but fewer resources are focused on technical solutions to mental health issues. The present paper carried out a systematic review of available literature using PRISMA guidelines to address various monitoring solutions in mental health through the use of wearable sensor

Wearable Accelerometer and Gyroscope Sensors for Estimating the Severity of Essential Tremor.

BACKGROUND: Several validated clinical scales measure the severity of essential tremor (ET). Their assessments are subjective and can depend on familiarity and training with scoring systems. METHOD: We propose a multi-modal sensing using a wearable inertial measurement unit for estimating scores on the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin tremor rating scale (FTM) and determine the classification accuracy within the tremor type. 17 ET participants and 18 healthy controls were recruited for the study. Two movement disorder neurologists who were blinded to prior clinical information viewed video recordings and sc

Data-Driven Personalized Care in Lung Cancer: Scoping Review and Clinical Recommendations on Performance Status and Activity Level of Patients With Lung Cancer Using Wearable Devices.

PURPOSE: Performance status (PS) is a crucial assessment for research and clinical practice in lung cancer (LC), including its usage for the assessment of the suitability and toxicity of treatment or eligibility for clinical trials of patients with LC. These PS assessments are subjective and lead to substantial discrepancies between observers. To improve the objectivity of PS assessments, Electronic Activity Monitoring devices (EAMs) are increasingly used in oncology, but how these devices are used for PS assessments in LC is an issue that remains unclear. The goal of this study is to address

Suitability of a Low-Cost Wearable Sensor to Assess Turning in Healthy Adults.

Background: Turning is a complex measure of gait that accounts for over 50% of daily steps. Traditionally, turning has been measured in a research grade laboratory setting, however, there is demand for a low-cost and portable solution to measure turning using wearable technology. This study aimed to determine the suitability of a low-cost inertial sensor-based device (AX6, Axivity) to assess turning, by simultaneously capturing and comparing to a turn algorithm output from a previously validated reference inertial sensor-based device (Opal), in healthy young adults. Methodology: Thirty partici

A deep tensor-based approach for automatic depression recognition from speech utterances.

Depression is one of the significant mental health issues affecting all age groups globally. While it has been widely recognized to be one of the major disease burdens in populations, complexities in definitive diagnosis present a major challenge. Usually, trained psychologists utilize conventional methods including individualized interview assessment and manually administered PHQ-8 scoring. However, heterogeneity in symptomatic presentations, which span somatic to affective complaints, impart substantial subjectivity in its diagnosis. Diagnostic accuracy is further compounded by the cross-sec

UVM KID Study: Identifying Multimodal Features and Optimizing Wearable Instrumentation to Detect Child Anxiety.

Anxiety and depression, collectively known as internalizing disorders, begin as early as the preschool years and impact nearly 1 out of every 5 children. Left undiagnosed and untreated, childhood internalizing disorders predict later health problems including substance abuse, development of comorbid psychopathology, increased risk for suicide, and substantial functional impairment. Current diagnostic procedures require access to clinical experts, take considerable time to complete, and inherently assume that child symptoms are observable by caregivers. Multi-modal wearable sensors may enable d

The Impact of Wearable Electronics in Assessing the Effectiveness of Levodopa Treatment in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: In order to evaluate Parkinson disease patients' response to therapeutic interventions, sources of information are mainly patient reports and clinicians' assessment of motor functions. However, these sources can suffer from patient's subjectivity and from inter/intra rater's score variability. Our work aimed at determining the impact of wearable electronics and data analysis in objectifying the effectiveness of levodopa treatment. METHODS: Seven motor tasks performed by thirty-six patients were measured by wearable electronics and related data were analyzed. This was at the time of

Real-Time Performance Assessment of High-Order Tremor Estimators Used in a Wearable Tremor Suppression Device.

The side effects and complications of traditional treatments for treating pathological tremor have led to a growing research interest in wearable tremor suppression devices (WTSDs) as an alternative approach. Similar to how the human brain coordinates the function of the human system, a tremor estimator determines how a WTSD functions. Although many tremor estimation algorithms have been developed and validated, whether they can be implemented on a cost-effective embedded system has not been studied; furthermore, their effectiveness on tremor signals with multiple harmonics has not been invest

Chitosan-enhanced nonswelling hydrogel with stable mechanical properties for long-lasting underwater sensing.

Existing anti-swelling hydrogels with poor mechanical strength restrict their underwater human monitoring as wearable electronic sensing equipment. Herein, a nonswelling double network (DN) hydrogel with strong self-recoverability (97.22%) was developed by adding chitosan (CS) to poly(acrylic acid-2-methoxyethyl acrylate)-Fe3+ [P(AA-MEA)-Fe] network. Owing to the introduction of CS, the hydrogel displayed excellent nonswelling properties under aqueous solutions (pH = 1, 4 and 7), physiological saline, seawater, dodecane, n-hexane and chloroform. Besides, CS improved mechanical properties of hy
