Injuries to the wrist and hands occur frequently in athletes from the high forces applied during sporting events. The examples presented illustrate the important role imaging has in the diagnosis of wrist and hand injuries. In addition, different imaging modalities are complementary and various examinations may be needed to help guide the management of wrist and hand traumatic pathology.

Recent technical and technological developments in wrist arthroscopic surgery allow for advanced treatments of difficult wrist disorders. In this review, world leaders of wrist arthroscopy describe bone graft for scaphoid nonunion, transosseous repair for triangular fibrocartilage fovea avulsion, palmaris longus reconstruction of the triangular fibrocartilage, and arthroscopic reconstruction of the scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligaments.

Hand and wrist fractures are common in the pediatric population. Accurate diagnosis relies on the understanding of the physeal anatomy and carpal ossification. Treatment of these fractures is largely influenced by physeal biology and compliance with treatment. A majority have a favorable outcome with nonoperative treatment. Operative treatment should be considered in patients with clinical deformity, open fractures, and significant fracture displacement. Physeal-friendly surgical approaches and implants should be used to minimize the sequelae of physeal injury.

Background and Purpose Wrist swelling is a frequent clinical manifestation of Kienböck's disease, but no study has reported the site and pathology of wrist swelling in this disease. The aim of this study is to elucidate the site and pathology of wrist swelling in Kienböck's disease. Materials and Methods Dorsal and palmar soft tissue thicknesses of the wrist were measured on standard lateral radiographs of the wrist in 26 patients with Kienböck's disease and 30 subjects without intra-articular lesion. Axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) views were examined to detect the site of swelling.

Management of hand and wrist injuries for athletes often places emphasis on an expeditious return to sport. Arthroscopic techniques have the advantage of directly visualizing joint derangements and correcting them via a minimally invasive approach. This article discusses the evaluation and management of common wrist injuries treated with arthroscopy in athletes, including scapholunate and lunotriquetral injury, triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, hamatolunate impingement, and arthroscopic-assisted reduction of wrist fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Severely painful or dysfunctional destroyed wrists can be reconstructed by fusion, interposition of soft-tissue or by arthroplasty using artificial materials. Total and partial wrist arthroplasty (T/PWA) has been used on a regular basis since the 1960's. The objective of this study was to review the literature on second, third and fourth generation implants.
METHODS: The review was conducted according to the PRISMA-guidelines. A search was made using a protocolled strategy and well-defined criteria in PubMed, in the Cochrane Library and by screening reference lists.
RESULTS: 37

One of the most frequent skeletal injuries to the body is a fracture of the distal forearm or wrist. These injuries commonly arise from a fall onto an outstretched hand. Plain radiographs are the mainstay in the initial evaluation of these injuries. Factors affecting injuries to the forearm and wrist depend on the age of the patient, severity of injury, exact mechanism and direction of force to the injury. However, wrist injuries in particular can be subtle on plain radiographs and therefore difficult to identify. It is essential to identify injuries early so that appropriate management is imp

GOAL: The goal of this retrospective study was to examine the functional results after complete and partial denervation of the wrist, the time of postoperative pain reduction and the overall satisfaction of the patient related to the extend of denervation and preoperative diagnosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 43 out of 70 patients with chronic wrist pain who underwent complete or partial wrist denervation from 1993 to 2000 were included in this study. The mean follow-up time was 51 (18-97) months. Prior to denervation a test denervation was performed with the injection of local anesthetics. In ord

Wrist arthroscopy is a commonly used procedure that has undergone many modifications and improvements since it was first described. The advent of new portals (both dorsal and volar) means that the wrist joint can be viewed from virtually any perspective ("box concept"). Indications for wrist arthroscopy have continued to expand and include diagnostic and reparative procedures and, more recently, reconstructive, soft-tissue, and bony procedures. Arthroscopic grading of Kienböck's disease better describes articular damage compared with plain radiographs and can help guide surgical treatment opti

There is a well-established association with ectopic fibrosis in Dupuytren's disease, but involvement of the wrist is rare. To our knowledge there have been only 5 cases reported in the literature. The authors present a patient with Dupuytren's disease involving only the proximal palm and wrist who presented with functional limitation and a rapid clinical progression.

Arthroscopic synovectomy is a safe outpatient procedure with minimal postoperative morbidity. In patients who have rheumatoid arthritis and possibly also in patients who have JRA, SLE, and postinfectious arthritis, a long period of increased comfort and improved function can be anticipated. The procedure may be considered in post-traumatic cases with joint contracture and as an adjunct to other measures for certain osteoarthritic disorders. In patients who have septic arthritis with insufficient clinical improvement after systemic antibiotics and lavage, arthroscopic synovectomy seems advantag

The leading symptom wrist pain may be caused by a number of different pathologies. These cover traumatic and non-traumatic changes to the bone (including primary arthrosis, chronic polyarthritis, aseptic bone necroses, e.g. Kienböck's disease). Other possible sources of pain may be the capsule/ligament structures of the wrist, the predominant condition in terms of incidence and severity being injuries to the scapholunar ligament. In young women in particular, differential diagnostic considerations should include instability of the wrist. The diagnostic work-up comprises history-taking, physica

Overuse syndromes in the wrist or hand can occur from repetitive use of the wrist and hand or from recurrent direct trauma to the hand area. Tendinitis syndromes due to overstretching or shear stress are seen commonly on both the extensor and flexor sides of the wrist. Overuse syndromes also can take the form of neurovascular syndromes, resulting in compression syndromes of the median, ulnar, and superficial branch of the radial nerve in the wrist area and trauma to the ulnar and digital vessels supplying the hand. Treatment in most cases involves rest with splinting, icing, and NSAIDs in acut

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the results of treatment of 40 wrist ganglia operated under local anesthesia over four years. The mean follow-up period was 27 months (range 6-48 months). There were 24 dorsal and 16 volar ganglia. The mean complication rate was 56% for volar ganglia, 12.5% for dorsal ganglia, and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). The recurrence rates were 31.2% and 8.3%, respectively (mean 17.5%). There was evidence of nerve damage to the superficial branch of the radial nerve in one patient (dorsal cyst) and to the palmar cutaneous branch of the median

This article reviews general considerations for therapists when initiating early motion after wrist surgery. Various early range of motion techniques and splinting are discussed in detail for the radiocarpal joint and distal radioulnar joint.
