Eyelid reconstruction in a child with xeroderma pigmentosum.

CLINICAL CASE: Seven-year-old male patient, affected by xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) who was referred to ophthalmology due to the presence of numerous tumours in his left eye that affected the eyelids and conjunctiva. He had a tumour in his lower eyelid that affected the free edge, creating a secondary ectropion, and several lesions with a melanocytic appearance in conjunctiva. A resection of the eyelid tumour and the conjunctival lesions were performed by placing a skin graft and amniotic membrane, respectively, as covering. DISCUSSION: XP patients have high probability of developing eye tumou…

Atypical Fibroxanthoma of the Conjunctiva in Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

BACKGROUND: Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a pleomorphic tumor that most commonly presents in the elderly and arises on sun-exposed skin. METHODS: We report a case of a 24-year-old white male with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), who developed an AFX of the conjunctiva, and review the literature. RESULTS: The patient presented with a rapidly growing conjunctival mass which was surgically excised and found to be AFX. The patient has done well with no recurrence. A review of the literature was performed, and we found that only one other case has been published so far. CONCLUSION: Patients with XP…

Angiosarcoma of the scalp associated with Xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associated with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light due to defects in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair. These patients have more than a 1000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancers. Although multiple cutaneous malignancies are common, the simultaneous occurrence of angiosarcoma and basal cell carcinoma is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of a 25-year-old male with XP with angiosarcoma scalp and basal cell carcinoma of face and occiput and discuss the treatment of this aggressive neoplasm with a review of the …

Xeroderma pigmentosum: a review and case series.

Xeroderma pigmentosa (XP) is a condition inherited as an autosomal recessive trait and is characterized by photosensitivity, pigmentary changes, premature skin ageing and malignant tumour development resulting from the defect in DNA repair. The management of complications of XP, especially orofacial tumours entails an enormous surgical challenge to the clinicians. We present five cases of XP.

Cutaneous angiosarcoma in a patient with xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by photosensitivity, cutaneous pigmentary changes, premature skin ageing and development of various cutaneous and internal malignancies at an early age as a result of a defect in nucleotide excision repair following ultraviolet light exposure. Cutaneous angiosarcomas are aggressive neoplasms that are rarely associated with XP. In this communication, we report the case of a 40-year-old male patient with XP who developed an angiosarcoma of the face and discuss the implications of this association in view of recent d…

Management of a young patient with xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a group of rare autosomal recessive disorders with defective DNA repair that provide insight into the basic mechanism of carcinogenesis. It is the best human model linking clinical abnormalities and neoplasia to carcinogen exposure. We describe a patient with xeroderma pigmentosum and numerous basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas treated with radiation therapy, Mohs micrographic surgery, dermabrasion, and isotretinoin prophylaxis.

Management of corneal complications in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is an uncommon, recessively inherited disorder characterized by hypersensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, with defective repair of DNA damage caused by short-wavelength radiation. Patients with this disease experience progressive and precancerous changes in sun-exposed areas of the skin and mucous membranes. Some patients develop progressive neurologic degeneration. Eye involvement includes lid, conjunctiva, and corneal disorders. We report clinical, histopathologic findings, and complex management strategies used for a 33-year-old woman with xeroderma pigmentosum a…

Chemoprevention of skin cancer in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare recessive disease with sun sensitivity, increased freckling and defective DNA repair. Xeroderma pigmentosum patients have more than a 1000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancer including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. We studied chemoprevention of new skin cancers with oral retinoids in xeroderma pigmentosum patients who had multiple skin cancers. Xeroderma pigmentosum patients were cleared of all pre-existing tumors surgically and then treated with high dose (2 mg/kg/day) oral isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid, Accutane) fo…

[Ultrastructural findings in the cornea in xeroderma pigmentosum].

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a very rare disease caused by an inherited defect in the DNA repair system. The cells are less able to repair defects caused by UV radiation, which results in early aging of the skin and the development of malignant skin tumors. Robins assumes that the eye is involved in 60% of the cases. In our patient we found a dense opacity of both corneas in addition to the typical lentiginous alteration of the skin. Therefore, a corneal transplantation was carried out on both eyes. The corneal buttons obtained by keratoplasty were examined by light, and transmission electron micr…
