DNA relatedness of Leptospira strains isolated from beef cattle in Zimbabwe.

The DNA relatedness of 17 Leptospira strains isolated from beef cattle in Zimbabwe was determined using the hydroxyapatite method. Similarly to previously speciated African strains, all Zimbabwe isolates belonged to either Leptospira borgpetersenii or Leptospira kirschneri. All serovars within serogroups Pyrogenes (kwale, mombe and a strain closely related to serovar nigeria), Hebdomadis (marondera and mhou), Tarassovi (ngavi) and Sejroe (balcanica and hardjo) were L. borgpetersenii. L. kirschneri contained all strains in serovars of serogroups Icterohaemorrhagiae (zimbabwe), Australis (fugis)

Risk factors for sexually transmitted disease amongst men in Harare, Zimbabwe.

A cross sectional survey was carried out among adult males attending a municipal polyclinic and two private practitioner surgeries in a Harare high density suburb, in order to identify risk factors for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). One hundred and twenty subjects participated, of whom 83 were cases (those with STD in the past six months) and 37 were controls (those with no STD). No association of STD was found with marital status, place of residence of wife, age, level of education or employment. STD was strongly associated with alcohol consumption (Odds Ratio = 7,1 [95 pc CI: 2,8-18,7])

Measles epidemic in Harare, Zimbabwe, despite high measles immunization coverage rates.

Despite rapidly increasing measles immunization coverage in Harare city, measles remains endemic, and regular outbreaks occur. The most recent occurred in 1988, when the measles immunization coverage was 83%. We have carried out a retrospective study of the clinical and epidemiological features of this outbreak to assess whether the present immunization policy needs to be changed. Of 4357 cases of measles seen at primary health care centres and hospitals in Harare during the outbreak, 1399 (32%) were severe or involved complications that required hospital admission. The peak incidence occurred

'I Did Not Choose This': teenage girls and the reproductive pipeline in rural Zimbabwe.

This article rethinks teenage pregnancy in rural Zimbabwe through a decolonial Afro-feminist lens, foregrounding the lived narratives of 26 teenage mothers in Shamva. Rather than pathologising their experiences or framing early pregnancy as a failure of knowledge or morality, we conceptualise the notion of a reproductive pipeline-a system through which poverty, gendered power, inadequate healthcare, and emphasised femininity converge to constrain girls' reproductive autonomy. The analysis reveals how early pregnancy is produced through a reproductive pipeline where poverty, patriarchy, kinship

Cost-effectiveness of safer conception strategies for HIV-discordant couples in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Data on the cost-effectiveness of safer conception strategies are limited, particularly where HIV is endemic. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy with frequent viral load monitoring (ART/VL), oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), vaginal insemination (VI), and semen washing (SW) for HIV-discordant couples in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We used decision-analytic models to compare safer conception strategies alone and in combination, with current practice. Costs (2024 USD) were estimated using micro-costing/time-and-motion studies within a safer conception program

Trends in the Incidence of Cancers of the GI Tract in Harare, Zimbabwe, 1990-2019.

PURPOSE: Data on long-term time trends in the incidence of cancer are an invaluable resource for tracking the evolution of the disease in populations, but they are very scarce in Africa. The Zimbabwe National Cancer Registry of Harare can report on the evolution of the cancer epidemic over a 30-year period. METHODS: Trends in age-standardized incidence rates in the Black (African) population (males and females) are reported for six cancers of the GI tract (oral cavity plus oropharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon plus rectum, liver, and pancreas). RESULTS: There has been a steady increase in th

Integrating status-neutral and targeted HIV testing in Zimbabwe: A complementary strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Zimbabwe exclusively implemented targeted HIV testing until 2022 when Status-neutral testing was embraced. Whilst targeted testing aims to expand access and uptake of testing among high-risk individuals, status-neutral testing emphasizes post-test linkage to prevention and treatment services. To address how the two concepts relate in practice, we explored how status-neutral and targeted testing concepts correlate, in developing a double-edged strategy for effective case identification and linkage to prevention and treatment. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 36 mu

Surgical management of a midline submental neck mass in Zimbabwe: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Differential diagnoses of a pediatric neck mass are extensive, ranging across benign, malignant, congenital and infectious causes. Limited access to imaging in low-resource settings increases the complexity of narrowing this list to appropriately diagnose and treat neck masses. This occasionally allows neck masses to grow unchecked, increasing the morbidity of their presence and eventual excision. The goal of this report is to describe nuances in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric neck masses in resource-limited settings through a case report of a neck mass in a pediatric p

Impact of Covid-19 pandemic on obstetric fistula repair program in Zimbabwe.

The advent of Covid-19 pandemic adversely affected many programs worldwide, public health, including programming for obstetric fistula were not spared. Obstetric fistula is an abnormal connection between the vagina and the bladder or the rectum resulting from obstetric causes, mainly prolonged obstructed labour. Zimbabwe has two obstetric fistula repair centers. Because the program uses specialist surgeons from outside the country, the repairs are organized in quarterly camps with a target to repair 90 women per quarter. This study aimed at assessing the impact of restrictions on movement and

Modelling the impact of climate change on the distribution and abundance of tsetse in Northern Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is predicted to impact the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases. Tsetse flies (Glossina) transmit species of Trypanosoma that cause human and animal African trypanosomiasis. A previous modelling study showed that temperature increases between 1990 and 2017 can explain the observed decline in abundance of tsetse at a single site in the Mana Pools National Park of Zimbabwe. Here, we apply a mechanistic model of tsetse population dynamics to predict how increases in temperature may have changed the distribution and relative abundance of Glossina pallidipes acr

The Political Economy of Tobacco in Mozambique and Zimbabwe: A Triangulation Mixed Methods Protocol.

Changing global markets have generated a dramatic shift in tobacco consumption from high-income countries (HICs) to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); by 2030, more than 80% of the disease burden from tobacco use will fall on LMICs. Propelling this shift, opponents of tobacco control have successfully asserted that tobacco is essential to the economic livelihoods of smallholder tobacco farmers and the economy of tobacco-growing countries. This nexus of economic, agricultural and public health policymaking is one of the greatest challenges facing tobacco control efforts, especially in LM
