The temporal modulation transfer function (temporal MTF) was measured in normal controls and in patients with retinal diseases, optic neuritis and amblyopia. The temporal MTF of controls showed "band-pass" filter properties, having a peak sensitivity at about 15 Hz at 1,000 trolands of mean retinal illuminance. As the retinal illuminance was reduced, the sensitivity decreased, first at high temporal frequencies, then the peak sensitivity decreased. In this cross-sectional study, the vision-screening process is described for 8417 children aged 3 to 5 seen for health supervision in a group of 102 pediatric practices in 23 states and Puerto Rico. Three hundred forty children who failed screening (63% of those who failed) were followed up 2 months after initial screening. The sample was 52% male, 86% white, 9% black, 3% Hispanic, and 1% Asian. Vascular hamartomas in childhood may occur in isolation, or in a more generalised form with both cutaneous and visceral involvement. Many of these require no active intervention, other than parental reassurance. However, isolated lesions around the eye may seriously compromise developing vision, and in children with larger haemangiomas or diffuse haemangiomatosis, life-threatening complications may arise. A logical and comprehensive program for the total ophthalmic rehabilitation of the dysthyroid patient is described. Surgical rehabilitation is always considered in four stages: orbital decompression, extraocular muscle surgery, eyelid margin repositioning, and blepharoplasty. Each stage must be considered in order. By observance of this protocol, repeat surgical procedures can be minimized.

Surgical results in 30 cases of traumatic cataracts using mainly aspiration and extraction techniques are reported. A corrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better was achieved in 64.3% of cases. Three eyes had light perception only. Early surgery using aspiration technique followed by contact lens correction is recommended for traumatic cataracts.

Ninety eyes undergoing surgery for the removal of traumatic cataracts were evaluated. In the total group, the visual results fell generally into the 2 categories of satisfactory or poor. Most commonly, the latter patients sustained extensive preoperative trauma or were visually immature at the time of the injury. Forty-eight eyes, or 54% of this series, achieved an acuity of 20/80 or better, with 38, or 42%, achieving a corrected acuity of 20/20 to 20/30. There were 20 eyes in the patients 6 years of age and under, and a visual result of 20/60 or better was obtained in 7 of those eyes.
