PURPOSE: Evaluate the ZEBRA 2000 (Z-10) bifocal contact lens on presbyopic and aphakic patients.
METHODS: Thirty-eight patients, 37 presbyopes and one aphake, were fit in the Z-10 and evaluated for 6 months.
RESULTS: Twenty patients (53%) completed 6 months of contact lens wear. Ten (26%) discontinued due to lens related problems, three (8%) discontinued due to other health problems, and five (13%) were lost to follow-up. Average refits per eye were 1.75. PURPOSE: To evaluate the affect of removing the crystalline lens and implanting an intraocular lens on the axial elongation of a neonatal eye.
METHODS: Monocular lensectomy coupled with the implantation of a monofocal or multifocal intraocular lens was performed on 21 neonatal rhesus monkeys. Fellow eyes were randomized to part-time occlusion therapy or no treatment. Longitudinal axial elongation of the pseudophakic eyes was then compared to that of the fellow eyes, to the eyes of 19 monkeys made monocularly aphakic as neonates, and to the eyes of 39 normal monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset glaucoma can occur after pediatric cataract surgery. However, no large prospective study of the prevalence of ocular hypertension and glaucoma after pediatric cataract surgery has been performed.
METHODS: A prospective glaucoma evaluation was offered to all eligible subjects at least 5 years after automated lensectomy and vitrectomy for pediatric cataracts.

Young children with surgically removed lenses and extreme nearsightedness can benefit from contact lenses, but their parents may need instruction to teach their children to accept lenses. In this study, 4 children under the age of 5 years were taught contact lens wear using a shaping procedure. In this study we examined refractive changes of 34 eyes in 34 patients treated with silicone oil injection. Six patients presented with aphakic retinal detachment, another 14 were rendered aphakic after silicone oil injection, one was pseudophakic and 13 were still phakic at the time of writing this report. We measured prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4 in the aqueous humor of baboon eyes, 1 or 8 days after phacoemulsification, with or without posterior chamber lens implantation. The analysis concerned 100 eyes (91 persons) operated for senile (89 eyes), traumatic (7 eyes) and pathological (4 cases) cataracts, with implantation of an artificial anterior chamber lens. The age of the patients oscillated between 32 and 86 years. The period of observation amounted from several months to 3 years. In 83 cases the final visual acuity was over 0.7. The influence of correcting soft contact lenses and pleoptic-orthoptic exercises on the improvement of the visual acuity and acquiring of binocular vision was analyzed in 22 patients aged 17-65 years after unilateral cataract extraction. Visual acuity of between 5/5 and 5/16 was attained in 88.6 p.c. of patients, binocular vision in 85.9 p.c. Poorer results were observed in persons with a diminished transparency of the ocular media caused by injury as well as in younger individuals after congenital cataract surgery.

Cytarabine has been demonstrated to be a more potent inhibitor of fibroblast proliferation than fluorouracil. It is, however, more toxic to the retina. We evaluated the ocular toxicity of liposome-encapsulated cytarabine in vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized rabbit eyes by ophthalmic and histopathologic examination. Epikeratoplasty has been performed on eight eyes of seven patients by one surgeon in Melbourne since March 1988. All cases were contact lens or spectacle intolerant. Standard surgical techniques utilising donor lenticules imported from the United States and including an annular keratectomy were employed for the procedure. In a prospective study 84 patients with aphakic retinal detachment were treated either by local scleral buckling alone or combined with an encirclement. The rate of surgical reattachment of the retina was found to be similar with either technique over a minimum follow-up period of one year. Simplicity and a low incidence of serious complications of the local procedure merit its application as the initial method of repairing aphakic detachments.

Psychophysical spectral sensitivities were obtained from aphakic human subjects in the photopic range. The foveal spectrum has a primary peak near 550 nm and a secondary peak about 0.7 log units lower around 380 nm. Off fovea, beyond most of the macular pigment, the curve is quite broad.
