Mirror hands and feet (MIM, 135750) is a rare congenital anomaly, and mirror-image polydactyly is considered to be a variant of mirror hands and feet. To our knowledge, seven patients with the disorder have been reported in the literature. Parent-to-child transmission was reported in two families, which may indicate a single-gene defect inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. We had previously encountered a boy with mirror-image polydactyly whose karyotype showed 46,XY,t(2;14) (p23.3;q13) de novo. We hypothesized that at least one of the putative genes responsible for the determination of

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, accounting for more than 900,000 deaths a year worldwide. Microbial dysbiosis, including the presence of oral bacteria in the gut, has been linked to CRC. Some mechanisms by which specific microorganisms potentially drive tumorigenesis have been described, but there is a lack of studies elucidating whole microbiota activity in the tumor and their implication for the development of the disease. Here, the metatranscriptomic data of tumor and control tissue-associated microbiota (n = 18 pairs), as well as fr

UNLABELLED: Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is an obligate, intracellular Gram-negative bacteria and the leading bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Chlamydia manipulates the host cell biology using various secreted bacterial effectors during its intracellular development. The early effector translocated actin-recruiting phosphoprotein (Tarp), important for Chlamydia entry, has a well-characterized C-terminal region which can polymerize and bundle F-actin. In contrast, not much is known about the function of the N-terminus of Tarp (N-Tarp), though present in many Chlamydi

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Inflammation, particularly that mediated by bacterial components translocating from the gut to the liver and binding to toll-like receptors (TLRs), is central to cholestatic liver injury. The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM-2) inhibits TLR-mediated signaling and exerts a protective role in hepatocellular injury and carcinogenesis. This study aims to evaluate the role of TREM-2 in cholestasis.
METHODS: TREM-2 expression was analyzed in the livers of patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and in mouse mo

Bacterial adaptation to stress can lead to phenotypic variants with diverse levels of niche competitiveness, pathogenicity, and antimicrobial resistance. In this work, we employed experimental evolution to investigate whether exposure to various stress conditions results in new phenotypic and metabolic properties in clinical and environmental strains of Vibrio cholerae. Our findings revealed the emergence of variants with metabolic and genetic variations and enhanced survival under stress compared to the parental isolates. Phenotypic changes in the evolved variants included colony morphology,

UNLABELLED: The discovery of Replication Competent Circular DNA molecules in mammalian cells and tissues is being linked to debilitating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and colorectal cancer (CRC). These circular DNA molecules, otherwise known as bovine meat and milk factors (BMMFs) and Slow Progressive Hidden INfections of variable (X) latency (SPHINX), bear significant (80%) sequence similarity with the plasmids of Acinetobacter baumannii strains. Nanostructures, such as bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) serve as vehicles for transpor

UNLABELLED: The microbiome as a broad term defines the most dynamic ecological system in which, apart from the biocenosis, there is unique niche for its development, equally dynamic, because host-derived, contrary to physical environment in ecology. Although for years, antibodies, was recognized as a key element of the mucosal barrier, there is still no progress in comprehensive linking microbes and humoral elements. Which organism is a pathogen and which is a commensal - there are still no exact answers (and criteria). Also the discrepancy between experimental research, using more and more so

Soluble fibres (non-starch polysaccharides, NSP) from edible plants but particularly plantain banana (Musa spp.), have been shown in vitro and ex vivo to prevent various enteric pathogens from adhering to, or translocating across, the human intestinal epithelium, a property that we have termed contrabiotic. Here we report that dietary plantain fibre prevents invasion of the chicken intestinal mucosa by Salmonella. In vivo experiments were performed with chicks fed from hatch on a pellet diet containing soluble plantain NSP (0 to 200 mg/d) and orally infected with S.Typhimurium 4/74 at 8 d of a

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is one of the main infectious complications of cirrhosis and occurs in 8-30% of hospitalized patients with ascites. SBP is characterized by infection of the ascitic fluid (AF) in the absence of any primary focus of intra-abdominal infection. The main route by which the AF becomes infected is the hematogenous route. The pathogenic mechanism by which infection develops is bacterial translocation from the intestinal flora to the mesenteric lymph nodes and from there to the bloodstream. Contributing factors are an increased growth of Gram-negative aerobic ba…

Chronic Post-Surgical Pain (CPSP) represents a prevalent complication following orthopedic surgery, significantly compromising patient recovery and quality of life. Emerging evidence indicates that the microbiota-immune-neural axis may play a contributory role in the pathogenesis and progression of CPSP, though direct causal evidence in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery remains limited. At the level of microbiota, gut dysbiosis may disrupt gut barrier integrity, potentially facilitating the translocation of bacterial products such as lipopolysaccharides into systemic circulation and there

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a persistent, highly toxic, and bioaccumulative contaminant that poses serious risks to soil ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the phytoremediation potential of Pennisetum pedicellatum and characterized chromium-associated rhizospheric bacteria in Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. A 60-day greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using four Cr(VI) treatments: control (T0), 25 mg kg⁻1 (T1), 50 mg kg⁻1 (T2), and 100 mg kg⁻1 (T3). Plant and soil samples were collected at 15-day intervals to evaluate growth, biomass, biochemical responses, and chromium acc

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent surfactants with ingestion as a major exposure route, positioning the intestine as a primary site of contact. This narrative review integrates mechanistic toxicology, multi-omics microbiology, and human observational studies to evaluate whether PFAS-associated disruption of intestinal homeostasis could contribute to colorectal cancer (CRC). In vitro epithelial systems and animal models indicate that selected PFAS can impair barrier function through altered membrane properties and reduced tight-junction expression, increasing paracellula
