Hypertuned boosting approach with Local Binary Pattern and Pivot Distribution Count method feature extractor for glaucoma identification.

Glaucoma, the second largest cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, causes significant damage to the optic nerve. Early diagnosis of glaucoma is crucial since without it, there will be continuous deterioration of vision. Manual detection of glaucoma based on fundus images is a tedious and potentially inaccurate process, making it important to develop computer-aided glaucoma detection systems. This paper introduces a hybrid approach to glaucoma detection that involves the use of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Pivot Distribution Count (PDC) feature extraction methods for the analysis of reti

Hearts may grow concentrically to balance ATP supply and demand and eccentrically to stabilize titin-based stress.

Hearts change their wall thickness (concentric growth) and chamber size (eccentric growth) as they adapt to circulatory demands and the intrinsic function of their contractile cells. Factors associated with wall thickening include variants of sarcomeric proteins that enhance contractility, mitochondrial dysfunction, and hypertension. Chambers can dilate due to many factors including sarcomeric variants that depress contractility and aortic and / or mitral valve insufficiency. Despite intensive study, the mechanisms that regulate cardiac growth remain unclear. It is also uncertain whether inher

A novel residual network based on multidimensional attention and pinwheel convolution for brain tumor classification.

Early and accurate brain tumor classification is vital for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Although Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely used in medical image analysis, they often struggle to focus on critical information adequately and have limited feature extraction capabilities. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel Residual Network based on Multi-dimensional Attention and Pinwheel Convolution (Res-MAPNet) for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) based brain tumor classification. Res-MAPNet is developed on two key modules: the Coordinated Local Importance Enhance

Role of Pharmacology in Dentistry: A Review of Analgesics, Antibiotics, and Local Anesthetics.

This review explores the essential role of pharmacology in dentistry, emphasizing the use of analgesics, antibiotics, and local anesthetics in managing pain, controlling infections, and ensuring procedural comfort. The integration of these pharmacological agents has significantly advanced dental care, allowing for more effective and patient-friendly treatments. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen serve as the primary analgesics, while opioids, despite their efficacy in severe cases, require careful prescribing due to their high risk of dependency and adverse effects

Harmonic Component Analysis: A novel training-free and asynchronous BCI classification method.

Assistive technologies can provide people with locked-in syndrome independence and improve their quality of life. However, existing brain-computer interfaces (BCI) can be unreliable and require excessive training. Therefore, we investigate the possibility of a training-free BCI that can provide asynchronous and online control of assistive robotic technologies. We propose the harmonic component analysis (HCA), a new training-free classifier for signals with known harmonic characteristics, such as steady-state visually evoked potentials. To validate the HCA, it is compared to the well-known cano

Effect of Forward Head Posture on Resting State Brain Function.

Forward head posture (FHP) is a common postural problem experienced by most people. However, its effect on brain activity is still unknown. Accordingly, we aimed to observe changes in brain waves at rest to determine the effect of FHP on the nervous systems. A total of 33 computer users (Male = 17; Female = 16; age = 22.18 ± 1.88) were examined in both FHP and neutral posture. For each session, brain waves were measured for 5 min, and then muscle mechanical properties and cranio-vertebral angle (CVA) were measured. Changes in brain waves between the neutral posture and FHP were prominent in ga

Understanding the Role of Biofilms in Acute Recurrent Tonsillitis through 3D Bioprinting of a Novel Gelatin-PEGDA Hydrogel.

Acute recurrent tonsillitis is a chronic, biofilm-related infection that is a significant burden to patients and healthcare systems. It is often treated with repeated courses of antibiotics, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance. Studying biofilms is key to understanding this disease. In vitro modelling using 3D bioprinted hydrogels is a promising approach to achieve this. A novel gelatin-PEGDA pseudomonas fluorescens-laden bioink was developed and bioprinted in a 3D hydrogel construct fabricated using computer-aided design to mimic the tonsillar biofilm environment. The bioprinted con

Vat photopolymerization of multifunctional fresnel lenses for ocular management.

In this study, multifunctional Fresnel lenses were explored as a potential solution for correcting vision in patients with color vision deficiency (CVD) and high myopia. Current studies have primarily focused on color vision correction through the 3D printing of glasses and contact lenses. However, the potential of 3D-printed multifunctional devices, such as Fresnel lenses, goes beyond addressing a single vision correction issue. For this study, computer-aided design (CAD) model of Fresnel lens with high diopter based on constant height configuration was developed. The CAD model was successful

[Segmentation of Mass in Mammogram Using Gaze Search Patterns].

PURPOSE: It is very difficult for a radiologist to correctly detect small lesions and lesions hidden on dense breast tissue on a mammogram. Therefore, recently, computer-aided detection (CAD) systems have been widely used to assist radiologists in interpreting images. Thus, in this study, we aimed to segment mass on the mammogram with high accuracy by using focus images obtained from an eye-tracking device. METHODS: We obtained focus images for two mammography expert radiologists and 19 mammography technologists on 8 abnormal and 8 normal mammograms published by the DDSM. Next, the auto-encod

Graph Node Based Interpretability Guided Sample Selection for Active Learning.

While supervised learning techniques have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in many medical image analysis tasks, the role of sample selection is important. Selecting the most informative samples contributes to the system attaining optimum performance with minimum labeled samples, which translates to fewer expert interventions and cost. Active Learning (AL) methods for informative sample selection are effective in boosting performance of computer aided diagnosis systems when limited labels are available. Conventional approaches to AL have mostly focused on the single label setting wher

Multi-Sensor Data Fusion Solutions for Blind and Visually Impaired: Research and Commercial Navigation Applications for Indoor and Outdoor Spaces.

Several assistive technology solutions, targeting the group of Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI), have been proposed in the literature utilizing multi-sensor data fusion techniques. Furthermore, several commercial systems are currently being used in real-life scenarios by BVI individuals. However, given the rate by which new publications are made, the available review studies become quickly outdated. Moreover, there is no comparative study regarding the multi-sensor data fusion techniques between those found in the research literature and those being used in the commercial applications that ma

Assessing consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness using soft-clustering.

Consciousness is something we experience in our everyday life, more especially between the time we wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night, but also during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage. Disorders of consciousness (DoC) are states in which a person's consciousness is damaged, possibly after a traumatic brain injury. Completely locked-in syndrome (CLIS) patients, on the other hand, display covert states of consciousness. Although they appear unconscious, their cognitive functions are mostly intact. Only, they cannot externally display it due to their quadriplegia and inabilit

Overcoming biases in causal inference of molecular interactions.

MOTIVATION: Computer inference of biological mechanisms is increasingly approachable due to dynamically rich data sources such as single-cell genomics. Inferred molecular interactions can prioritize hypotheses for wet-lab experiments to expedite biological discovery. However, complex data often come with unwanted biological or technical variations, exposing biases over marginal distribution and sample size in current methods to favor spurious causal relationships. RESULTS: Considering function direction and strength as evidence for causality, we present an adapted functional chi-squared test
