The ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) antioxidant system is essential for plant growth, fruit ripening, and abiotic stress adaptation, while the functional mechanisms of genes participating in the AsA recycling pathway in blackcurrant remain largely unclear. A candidate differentially expressed gene, RnAPX6, which potentially regulates AsA biosynthesis and recycling, was screened via transcriptome profiling of blackcurrant cultivars with high- and low-total AsA contents at four distinct fruit developmental stages. Transient overexpression and VIGS silencing in blackcurrant fruit, as well as stab

Tobacco stalks, as one of the annual economic crops rich in biomacromolecules such as cellulose and hemicellulose, are more difficult to decompose into cellulose fibers due to their high degree of lignification compared to other ordinary straw feedstocks, resulting in their underutilization. In this study, we developed a mild three-stage alkali‑oxygen (AO) process to efficiently deconstruct the tobacco stalk cell walls. The process, involving alkaline dosages of 15 %, 10 %, and 3 % at each stage, effectively dissociated the cell walls and yielded cellulose fibers with high brightness (42.0 % I

When replanting an asparagus field, the roots of the previous crop are crushed and incorporated into the soil, creating problems of autotoxicity and fungal infections. Asparagus roots can be considered as a valuable byproduct, since they are very rich in saponins (3-6%), compounds currently considered as bio-emulsifiers. The objective is to evaluate the emulsifying and foaming capacity of a saponin extract from asparagus roots (ARS) and compare it with other commercial extracts. ARS was obtained using a process patented by our research group. The results have shown that ARS has activity simila

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp. fungi and is widely found in moldy corn, wheat, barley, and other grains. ZEA is distributed to the whole body via blood circulation after metabolic transformation in animals. Through oxidative stress, immunosuppression, apoptosis, autophagy, and mitochondrial dysfunction, ZEA leads to hepatitis, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, abortion, and stillbirth in female animals, and decreased sperm motility in male animals. In recent years, due to the influence of climate, storage facilities, and other factors, the problem of ZEA pollution

Plant growth and development depend on sufficient nutrient availability in soils. Agricultural soils are generally nitrogen (N) deficient, and thus soils need to be supplemented with fertilizers. Ammonium (NH4+) is a major inorganic N source. However, at high concentrations, NH4+ becomes a stressor that inhibits plant growth. The cause of NH4+ stress or toxicity is multifactorial, but the interaction of NH4+ with other nutrients is among the main determinants of plants' sensitivity towards high NH4+ supply. In addition, NH4+ uptake and assimilation provoke the acidification of the cell externa

Equivalence testing is an important component of safety assessments, used for example by the European Food Safety Authority, to allow new food or feed products on the market. The aim of such tests is to demonstrate equivalence of characteristics of test and reference crops. Equivalence tests are typically univariate and applied to each measured analyte (characteristic) separately without multiplicity correction. This increases the probability of making false claims of equivalence (type I errors) when evaluating multiple analytes simultaneously. To solve this problem, familywise error rate (FWE

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum pesticide used in crops and is found in many products used by industry and consumers. Unfortunately, glyphosate has been shown to have some toxicity toward many organisms found in our ecosystems and has been reported to have carcinogenic effects on humans. Hence, there is a need to develop novel nanosensors that are more sensitive and facile and permit rapid detection. Current optical-based assays are limited as they rely on changes in signal intensity, which can be affected by multiple factors in the sample. Herein, we report the development of a dual emissive c

Based on the previous finding that a substitution at 5-position of the benzene ring is favorable to enhance the degradation rates of sulfonylurea herbicides, a total of 16 novel 2,5-disubsituted sulfonylurea compounds were chemically synthesized and fully characterized by means of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS and X-ray diffraction. By using HPLC analysis, the degradation behavior of M03, a compound belonging to this family, was studied and confirmed that chlorsulfuron itself is not a degraded product of the 2,5-disubstituted sulfonylureas. Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the main factor limiting plant growth and the yield of cereal crops in acidic soils. Al-induced oxidative stress could lead to the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and aldehydes in plants. Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) genes, which play an important role in detoxification of aldehydes when exposed to abiotic stress, have been identified in most species. However, little is known about the function of this gene family in the response to Al stress. Here, we identified an ALDH gene in maize, ZmALDH, involved in protection against Al-induced oxidativ

Herbicides are the largest category of pesticides used in global agriculture, which is reflected in the rate of increase in the number of unique cases of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes since the late 1950s. Recommended herbicide resistance management strategies and tactics have evolved over the past 50 years through cumulative research and experience and have been regularly reviewed. Nevertheless, new perspectives may be gained by viewing current recommended strategies through the lens of insecticide, fungicide, and antibiotic resistance management. What commonalities exist and what is the

In agriculture, instead of synthetic fertilizers, natural bio-inoculants can be used to increase growth and yield of crops. For this purpose, we report a thermophilic bacteria Klebsiella sp. strain PMnew, isolated from Paniphala hot spring. The strain was characterized and assessed for plant growth-promoting traits. Oryza sativa L. var Swarna (rice) seeds were inoculated with the strain to study the bacterization effect on vegetative and reproductive growth of rice plants. The results indicate that PMnew produces organic acids to solubilize phosphate (550.16 ± 0.04 µg/ml), fixes nitrogen, prod

Rapeseed proteins are described to be poorly digestible in chickens. To further identify some molecular locks that may limit their use in poultry nutrition, we conducted a proteomic study on the various chicken digestive contents and proposed an integrative view of the proteins recruited in the crop, proventriculus/gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum for digestion of rapeseed by-products. Twenty-seven distinct rapeseed proteins were identified in the hydrosoluble fraction of the feed prior ingestion. The number of rapeseed proteins identified in digestive contents decreases throughout the di

Fusarium wilt is a devastating soil-borne disease caused mainly by highly host-specific formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum. Antagonistic microorganisms play a very important role in Fusarium wilt control, and the isolation of potential biocontrol strains is becoming more and more important. We isolated a bacterial strain (SEM-9) from the high-temperature stage of silkworm excrement composting, which had a marked ability to solubilize phosphorus, promote the growth and increase the yield of the small Chinese cabbage, and which also exhibited considerable antagonistic effect towards Fusarium

A major problem in flower bulb cultivation is weed control. Synthetic herbicides are mainly used, although they cause a range of problems, and integrated weed control through application of naturally occurring allelochemicals would be highly desirable. Flower bulb production creates large amounts of leftover biomass. Utilizing this source for weed control may provide new applications of the bulb crops. We therefore screened 33 flower bulb extracts for allelochemical activity against weeds. Several methanol and chloroform extracts were observed to inhibit germination and growth of Senecio vulga
