Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by species of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex. Different types of canids may act as definitive hosts by eating raw viscera infected with fertile hydatid cysts. The intermediate host (mainly ungulates) and humans acquire the infection through the fecal oral route (i.e. egg ingestion). Globally, more than 1 million people are affected by CE, causing a loss of 1-3 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and a financial burden of US$ 3 billion annually. Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) protocols pr

Human strongyloidiasis is an important intestinal parasitic disease that affects public health globally and is transmitted through contact with infective larvae on contaminated soil. Immunocompromised hosts can experience hyperinfection, which can lead to fatal systemic strongyloidiasis. Here, an innovative point-of-care (POC) test kit, the strongyloidiasis immunochromatographic blood test (the NIE-SsIR whole-blood ICT) kit is described. The kit was used to detect anti-Strongyloides IgG antibody in whole-blood samples (WBSs) instead of serum to diagnose strongyloidiasis. The kit is based on a

COVID-19 pandemic has been the talk of the globe, as it swept across the world population, changing enumerable aspects. The pandemic affected all sectors directly or indirectly. The food sector took a direct hit. The food packaging sector rose to the occasion to serve and feed the pandemic affected, but there were interactions, reactions, and consequences that evolved through the course of the journey through the pandemic. The aim of this perspective is to address the importance of the food packaging industry (from the COVID-19 point of view) and to highlight the unpreparedness of the food pac

Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) provide promising treatment options particularly for unmet clinical needs, such as progressive and chronic diseases where currently no satisfying treatment exists. Especially from the ATMP subclass of Tissue Engineered Products (TEPs), only a few have yet been translated from an academic setting to clinic and beyond. A reason for low numbers of TEPs in current clinical trials and one main key hurdle for TEPs is the cost and labor-intensive manufacturing process. Manual production steps require experienced personnel, are challenging to standardize and

BACKGROUND: Nursing homes are highly vulnerable to the occurrence of COVID-19 outbreaks, which result in high lethality rates. Most of them are not prepared to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic.
METHOD: A coordinated on-site medicalization program (MP) in response to a sizeable COVID-19 outbreak in 4 nursing homes was organized, with the objectives of improving survival, offering humanistic palliative care to residents in their natural environment, and reducing hospital referrals. Ten key processes and interventions were established (provision of informatic

National and international guidelines recommend droplet/airborne transmission and contact precautions for those caring for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in ambulatory and acute care settings. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, an acute respiratory infectious agent, is primarily transmitted between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes. A recognized key to transmission of COVID-19, and droplet infections generally, is the dispersion of bioaerosols from the patient. Increased risk of transmission has been associated with aeroso

Urine and struvite are promising organic fertilizers that can replace conventional fertilizers. However, these fertilizers can have some emerging contaminants, such as dipyrone. This drug is one of the main painkillers consumed in the world and its continuous and indiscriminate intake can promote the camouflage of symptoms of other diseases, anaphylactic shock and even death. Thus, a fast, sensitive, inexpensive and portable method for metamizole (dipyrone) determination in several matrices, applied as organic fertilizers, has been successfully developed using portable equipment and bare carbo

This study aimed to investigate a potential modulatory effect of E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the kinetics of deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) after pre- or post-hepatic LPS administration to unravel the putative role of the liver. Fifteen barrows were fed a diet containing mycotoxin-contaminated maize (4.59 mg DON/kg feed, 0.22 mg ZEN/kg feed) for 29 days and equipped with pre-hepatic catheters (portal vein, "po") and post-hepatic catheters (jugular vein, "ju"), facilitating simultaneous infusion of LPS ("LPS group", 7.5 μg/kg body weight) or 0.9% sterile NaCl solution (contr

The biocide triclosan is used in many personal care products, including toothpastes, soaps, clothing, and medical equipment. Consequently, it is present as a contaminant in the environment and has been detected in some human fluids, including serum, urine, and milk. Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the noses and throats of approximately 30% of the population. Colonization with S. aureus is known to be a risk factor for several types of infection. Here we demonstrate that triclosan is commonly found in the nasal secretions of healthy adults and the presence of t

The exposure-response patterns with beryllium sensitization (BeS), chronic beryllium disease (CBD) and lung cancer are influenced by a number of biological and physicochemical factors. Recent studies have suggested dermal exposure as a pathway for BeS. In light of the current non-health-based DOE Beryllium Rule surface criteria, the feasibility of deriving a human health-based surface dust cleanup criteria (SDCC) for beryllium was assessed based on toxicology and health risk factors via all potential routes of exposure. Beryllium-specific and general exposure factors were evaluated, including

Asbestos-containing materials in place in buildings, especially sprayed-on asbestos, are still an important health threat. Clearance of these materials has to be operated by specifically trained workers wearing specific individual protection suits after containment of the contaminated area. Good work practices are, however, not always applied. We report the case of two workers hired for ∼1 week to remove sprayed-on amosite asbestos during the remodeling of a former industrial hall. Regulatory protective equipments were not used. A legal action was initiated after disclosure of the working cond

Neonates hospitalized in NICU are at risk for healthcare associated infections because of their poor immune defenses, related to gestational age, colonization of mucous membranes and skin with nosocomial microorganisms, exposure to antibiotics, invasive procedures and frequent contacts with healthcare workers (HCWs). Healthcare associated infections are the major source of morbidity and mortality in NICU in the developed world. Most infections are caused by Gram-positive organisms, fulminant sepsis are often associated to Gram-negative organisms, fungal sepsis occurs frequently in ELBW infants

Bioterrorism is one of the main public health categorical domains. According to sociological analytics, in postmodern society terrorism is one of the real threats of the 21st century. While rare, the use of biological weapons has a long history. Recently, anthrax has been evaluated as one of the most dangerous biological weapons. Naturally occurring anthrax in humans is a disease acquired from contact with anthrax-infected animals or anthrax-contaminated animal products. Usually anthrax infection occurs in humans by three major routes: inhalational, cutaneous, and gastrointestinal. Inhalationa

Parasitic diseases are receiving increasing attention in developed countries in part because of their importance in travelers, immigrants, and immunocompromised persons. The main purpose of this review is to educate laboratorians, the primary readership, and health care workers, the secondary readership, about the potential hazards of handling specimens that contain viable parasites and about the diseases that can result. This is accomplished partly through discussion of the occupationally acquired cases of parasitic infections that have been reported, focusing for each case on the type of acc

Human beings are living between 70 and 90% inside of premises, where numerous air pollutants are existing: some of them have outdoor sources (industry, domestic burning, car traffic), some are produced indoors by human activities and equipment, by animals, or by various materials, products and furniture. According to their nature, they are listed as biological, physical or chemical pollutants. About health, serious poisonings and acute effects attributed to indoor air pollutants, and even short term effects (like sick building syndrome, infectious illness, pneumopathies,...), can be relatively

Identification of bacteria is a critical task in addressing bacterial contamination of the indoor environment. Standard culture-independent (e.g., PCR and DNA sequencing) or culture-dependent techniques capable of species-level identification are often costly, time-consuming, and require specialized equipment and personnel. This work presents a proof-of-concept study demonstrating the feasibility of detecting and identifying bacteria through analysis of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from their cultures using ambient pressure mass spectrometry and machine learning. An E. coli an

The urgency for climate action is recognized by international government and health care organizations, including the United Nations and World Health Organization. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution negatively impact all life on earth. All populations are impacted but not equally; the most vulnerable are at highest risk, an inequity further exacerbated by differences in access to health care globally. The delivery of health care exacerbates the planetary health crisis through greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to combustion of fossil fuels for medical equipment production and

The presence of bacteria poses a significant challenge to the quality of stallion semen used in artificial insemination. The bacterial content of insemination doses arises from various sources, such as the healthy stallion, environment, and collection equipment, and is implicated in fertility problems as well as reduced sperm quality during storage. The conventional approach of adding antibiotics to semen extenders raises concerns about antimicrobial resistance and potential negative effects on sperm characteristics, and may not be effective in inhibiting all bacteria. The objective of this st

BACKGROUND: Flexible nasendoscopy (FNE) is an invaluable multi-disciplinary tool for upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) examination. During the COVID-19 pandemic concerns were raised that FNE had the potential of generating aerosols resulting in human cross-contamination when performed on SARS-COV2 carriers. In the UK, and other European countries, national guidelines were issued restricting FNE to essential cases. We surveyed ENT-UK members and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) members to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (first peak) on FNE practice in the UK.
