PURPOSE: Endophthalmitis caused by endogenous Candida and Aspergillus species has emerged as a visually threatening complication in patients with immune deficiency of various causes. Twenty-five patients who underwent enucleation, 13 with endogenous Aspergillus endophthalmitis and 12 with endogenous Candida intraocular infections, were evaluated. Both clinical features and intraocular spread of the fungi were studied to determine which clinical and/or histopathologic features could help distinguish aspergillosis from Candida infections.

BACKGROUND: Cystic or diffuse epithelial ingrowth into the anterior chamber after cataract surgery is a rare complication. It can lead to painful secondary glaucomas or in case of fistulation to persisting ocular hypotony or atrophy of the globe due to wrong or inadequate therapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The cause of epithelial ingrowth was a previous cataract surgery in 15 of 59 patients (25 %, Erlangen Block-Excision Registry for epithelial ingrowth). Eleven patients were females. Mean age was 65 +/- 13 years.

Atropine is widely used to slow childhood myopia progression, but its mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. This study investigated atropine's effects on retinal neurochemistry in a chick model of form-deprivation myopia (FDM). Myopia was induced in chicks via monocular FDM. Retinas from FDM and contralateral normal eyes were enucleated, bisected and six retinal samples per group were incubated for 60 min in vitro in either 1.8 mM atropine or normal physiological buffer. Samples were fixed in glutaraldehyde for neurotransmitter detection using silver-intensified immunogold labelling.
