Spatial vs. object specific attention in high-order visual areas.

Recently we reported that the topographic organization of visual field eccentricity in human visual cortex extends into high-order, ventral occipitotemporal (VOT) cortex. Within this cortex, regions that respond preferentially to faces and buildings have specific eccentricity biases, suggesting that this category-eccentricity association may reflect differential needs of recognition processes. However, it is still not clear to what extent this center/periphery differentiation within high-order occipitotemporal cortex depends on immediate, moment-to-moment, task demands. Characterizing the development of visual search expertise in pathology residents viewing whole slide images.

The goal of this study was to examine and characterize changes in the ways that pathology residents examine digital whole slide images as they progress through the residency training. A series of 20 digitized breast biopsy whole slide images (half benign and half malignant biopsies) were individually shown to 4 pathology residents at four points in time--at the beginning of their first, second, third, and fourth years of residency. Their task was to examine each image and select three areas that they would most want to zoom in on in order to view the diagnostic detail at higher resolution. Eye

Bone graft application from anterior sinus maxillary wall in orbital floor reconstruction.

To analyze the reconstruction of inferior orbital wall with the use of bone graft harvested from anterior maxillary wall. Medical University of Silesia, Chair of Maxillofacial Surgery. Eighteen patients, aged between 16 and 64 years (15 men and 3 women), with posttraumatic orbital floor defects were treated. The technique was applied in 18 patients with defect in orbital inferior wall. In 11 patients, it was "blowout" fracture, and in 7 cases, the orbital wall fracture accompanied the zygomatico-orbital fracture. Bone transplant after fracture revision covered the orbital floor. Illusory shadow person causing paradoxical gaze deviations during temporal lobe seizures.

Generally, activation of the frontal eye field during seizures can cause versive (forced) gaze deviation, while non-versive head deviation is hypothesised to result from ictal neglect after inactivation of the ipsilateral temporo-parietal area. Almost all non-versive head deviations occurring during temporal lobe seizures are directed to the side of seizure onset, so in derogatory cases it is worth while explaining the paradoxical event. We present a patient with a paradoxical direction of gaze deviation during temporal lobe seizures with an unexpected explanation. Electrocortical stimulation

Amygdala volume and nonverbal social impairment in adolescent and adult males with autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a syndrome of unknown cause, marked by abnormal development of social behavior. Attempts to link pathological features of the amygdala, which plays a key role in emotional processing, to autism have shown little consensus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate amygdala volume in individuals with autism spectrum disorders and its relationship to laboratory measures of social behavior to examine whether variations in amygdala structure relate to symptom severity. DESIGN: We conducted 2 cross-sectional studies of amygdala volume, measured blind to diagnosis on high-resolution, anatomical

Brain representation of hemifield stimulation in poststroke visual field defects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Plasticity in extended, parallel, or reciprocal operating networks is well recognized. Changes in neuronal activity after lesions to distinct localized structures, such as the primary visual cortex, are less well characterized. We investigated the cortical reorganization in patients with poststroke visual field defects using blood oxygen level-dependent functional MRI. METHODS: Brain activation was measured in 7 patients with a single occipital cortical lesion and partially recovered hemianopia and in 7 age-matched control subjects. Differences in activation between re

Functional neuroanatomy of smooth pursuit and predictive saccades.

We used PET to study differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in smooth pursuit, predictive saccades and fixation. Eye movements were monitored in the scanner. Compared with fixation, pursuit and predictive saccades activated a network of highly similar areas, including frontal eye fields, supplementary eye fields, V5 and medial cuneus. Our findings are consistent with non-human primate studies that suggest that pursuit and saccades are controlled by similar and adjacent neural areas. Pursuit was associated with greater activation of caudate than saccades, suggesting a role for basal ganglia i

Digital measurement of ocular microtremor in Parkinson's Disease: Analytical and clinical validation.

Ocular microtremor (OMT) is an involuntary fixational eye movement linked to brainstem activity. OMT is thought to have a mean frequency range of 70-90 Hz in healthy adults. Previous research suggests OMT may be reduced in neurological diseases like Parkinson's Disease. Historically, OMT has been measured invasively in specialist laboratories using lengthy and expensive protocols. Developments now allow for OMT measurement quickly and non-invasively using hand-held technology (i.e., iTremor ONE). This pilot study aimed to examine the analytical and clinical validation of OMT measurement via th

Factors Affecting Visual Outcomes Following Scleral-Fixated Intraocular Lens Implantation at a Tertiary Care Center in Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Lens implantation becomes a major concern in patients lacking posterior capsular support, but various methods are available for rehabilitation. In such patients, scleral-fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL) implantation is preferred due to its fewer complications and better simulation of the natural lens position. In this non-randomized retrospective clinical study, we aimed to assess visual outcomes after sutureless SFIOL implantation in aphakic patients and factors affecting visual outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sci

Attention to text and pictures during storybook reading in preschool children with moderate hyperopia.

PURPOSE: Uncorrected, moderate hyperopia has been associated with poor emergent literacy skills. However, the eye movements of preschoolers have not yet been used to determine how well young, hyperopic children attend to text and pictures during storybook reading compared to emmetropic children. In this study, the percentage of visual on-task time during storybook reading for 4- and 5-year-old children with uncorrected, moderate hyperopia was compared to that of their emmetropic peers. The relationship between percentage visual on-task time and near visual function was also assessed. METHODS:

ACUTE MACULAR AND PERIPAPILLARY ANGIOGRAPHIC CHANGES WITH INTRAVITREAL INJECTIONS.

PURPOSE: Intravitreal injections acutely and temporarily increase intraocular pressure (IOP), and this may have cumulative long-term effects including an increased risk for glaucoma surgery. This study was designed to measure retinal perfusion density changes on optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography and OCT thickness alterations associated with acutely increased IOP after intravitreal injections. METHODS: Retrospective observational clinical study of 40 eyes (39 patients) with various retinopathies from October 2016 to June 2017 at a tertiary care retina clinic in NYC. Patients were

Medium term results in keratoprostheses with biocompatible and biological haptic.

PURPOSE: Corneal grafts or limbal stem cell transplantation are often unsuccessful in patients with severe ocular surface disorders such as severe dry eye syndrome, symblepharon or diffuse vascularisation. In those patients, a keratoprosthesis (KPro) may be an alternative for the recovery of vision. Various KPro differ from each other in the material of the haptic that supports the optic cylinder. The haptic may be made of biocompatible or biological material such as tibia bone (TKPro) or dentine and alveolar bone (osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, OOKP). On the basis of our experience, we wanted

Removal of dislocated intraocular lenses using pars plana vitrectomy with placement of an open-loop, flexible anterior chamber lens.

OBJECTIVE: There are many alternatives available to the vitreoretinal surgeon in the management of posteriorly dislocated intraocular lenses (IOL). The lens may be repositioned in the ciliary sulcus if there is adequate capsular support, but if this support is absent, it must either be sutured in place (to the sclera or iris) or exchanged for an anterior chamber (AC) IOL. Scleral-sutured IOLs can be associated with hemorrhage, cystoid macular edema, retinal detachment, and endophthalmitis (through the suture tract), and use sutures that must last for the lifetime of the patient. Anterior chamb

Amygdala activation for eye contact despite complete cortical blindness.

Cortical blindness refers to the loss of vision that occurs after destruction of the primary visual cortex. Although there is no sensory cortex and hence no conscious vision, some cortically blind patients show amygdala activation in response to facial or bodily expressions of emotion. Here we investigated whether direction of gaze could also be processed in the absence of any functional visual cortex. A well-known patient with bilateral destruction of his visual cortex and subsequent cortical blindness was investigated in an fMRI paradigm during which blocks of faces were presented either wit

Principles of facial trauma: orbital fracture management.

Often, complex, optimal management of the orbital fracture is directly dependent on thorough initial evaluation, correct injury assessment, and timely initiation of chosen therapy. Most often, secondary to assault or motor vehicle collision, these fractures are frequently associated with additional traumatic injury. With recent advances in imaging, alloplastic materials, and bone fixation technology, the evolution of orbital fracture management now enables reconstruction of even the most severe injuries.

Subcortical contributions to head movements in macaques. II. Connections of a medial pontomedullary head-movement region.

1. In the companion article, a variety of head movements were elicited by stimulation in, and adjacent to, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Cowie and Robinson 1994). We refer to this area, caudal to the abducens nucleus, as the gigantocellular head movement region. In the present paper, the anatomical connections of this region, as determined by injections of wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), are reported. The majority of efferent and afferent connections were with areas related to head movements. 2. Efferent fibers from the region projected via two paths

Spinal efference copy signaling and gaze stabilization during locomotion in juvenile Xenopus frogs.

In swimming Xenopus laevis tadpoles, gaze stabilization is achieved by efference copies of spinal locomotory CPG output that produce rhythmic extraocular motor activity appropriate for minimizing motion-derived visual disturbances. During metamorphosis, Xenopus switches its locomotory mechanism from larval tail-based undulatory movements to bilaterally synchronous hindlimb kick propulsion in the adult. The change in locomotory mode leads to body motion dynamics that no longer require conjugate left-right eye rotations for effective retinal image stabilization. Using in vivo kinematic analyses,

Same but different: 9-month-old infants at average and high risk for autism look at the same facial features but process them using different brain mechanisms.

The study examined whether 9-month-old infants at average vs. high risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) process facial features (eyes, mouth) differently and whether such differences are related to infants' social and communicative skills. Eye tracking and visual event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 35 infants (20 average-risk typical infants, 15 high-risk siblings of children with ASD) while they viewed photographs of a smiling unfamiliar female face. On 30% of the trials, the eyes or the mouth of that face was replaced with corresponding features from a different female. There

Eye tracking and visual attention to threating stimuli in veterans of the Iraq war.

Theoretical and clinical characterizations of attention in PTSD acknowledge the possibility for both hypervigilance and avoidance of trauma-relevant stimuli. This study used eye tracking technology to investigate visual orientation and attention to traumatic and neutral stimuli in nineteen veterans of the Iraq war. Veterans saw slides in which half the screen had a negatively valenced image and half had a neutral image. Negatively valenced stimuli were further divided into stimuli that varied in trauma relevance (either Iraq war or civilian motor vehicle accidents). Veterans reporting relative
