Molar distalization with the assistance of Temporary Anchorage Devices.

This article describes efficient techniques for distalization of maxillary and mandibular molars with the assistance of Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs). There are numerous occasions where the distalization of molars is required in lieu of the odontectomy of bicuspids. In the past, extra-oral force has been used, (i.e. Cervical or Combination Head Gear, or intra-oral force, i.e. Posterior Sagittal Appliance, Modified Greenfield Appliance, Williams DMJ 20001, CD Distalizer, Magill Sagittal, Pendulum Appliance, etc.). All the intra-oral appliances have a common denominator the orthodontic clin

Absence of multiple premolars and ankylosis of deciduous molar with cant of the occlusal plane treated using skeletal anchorage.

Ankylosis and the absence of premolars are two relatively common conditions encountered in the field of orthodontics. However, the absence of multiple premolars, particularly two adjacent premolars, along with ankylosis of deciduous teeth, is unusual. Herein, we present a case report and discuss some aspects related to these abnormalities. A 15-year-old boy was missing the upper right first and second premolars and the lower right and left second premolars. In addition, the deciduous lower left second molar was ankylosed and in infraocclusion, causing canting of the occlusal plane. The patient

Growth modulation using functional appliances--cephalometric predictors of successful response.

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine any skeletal morphologic features evident on a pretreatment lateral cephalogram that may be used to predict improvement in the sagittal relationship during functional appliance therapy in Class II patients and compare changes between cases with and without a favorable response to growth modulation. METHOD: Pretreatment and postfunctional lateral cephalograms were analyzed, and the change in the ANB angle was used to determine the skeletal response to treatment with a functional appliance. Based on the change in the ANB angle, the patients were divid

Medial pterygoid muscle and stylomandibular ligament: the effects on postoperative stability.

The postoperative skeletal stability following surgical advancement of the mandible can be influenced by several factors. The effect of the medial pterygoid muscle and the stylomandibular ligament on the stability of results following surgical advancement has possibly been underestimated. In this retrospective study, the long-term postoperative skeletal stability following surgical advancement of the mandible in two groups of patients was studied and compared. In one group the medial pterygoid muscle and the stylomandibular ligament were stripped from the medial side of the angle of the mandib

Maintenance of a deep bite prior to surgical mandibular advancement.

Adult patients with a Class II skeletal base are often treated by a combined orthodontic and surgical approach. Advancement of the mandible, most often including a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), is preceded by orthodontic alignment and frequently the curve of Spee is levelled. When the chin is prominent, there is a risk of accentuating this as a result of surgery. An option to prevent this is to maintain a deep curve of Spee before surgical advancement. This will result in an opening rotation of the mandible during surgery and thus, a less prominent chin. The aim of this study was

Severe Class II malocclusion with facial asymmetry treated with intraoral vertico-sagittal ramus osteotomy and LeFort I osteotomy.

In this article, we report the successful treatment of a patient, aged 19 years 11 months, who had a severe Class II malocclusion and facial asymmetry. A combination of intraoral vertical-sagittal ramus osteotomy (IVSRO), intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), and LeFort I osteotomy was used for mandibular advancement and maxillary impaction. The patient had a convex profile because of a retrognathic mandible. She also had severe mandibular deviation and vertical maxillary excess with a canted occlusal plane. A deep overbite of 8.0 mm and an excessive overjet of 10.0 mm were observed. Afte

Extraction as a treatment alternative follows repeated trauma in a severely handicapped patient.

Handicapped patients with protruding maxillary incisors are prone to repeated dental trauma. A 13-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, severe mental retardation and seizure disorder was referred to our department for restoring the traumatized anterior teeth. Despite drug combination, the frequency of seizure attack was around 10 times a month. The oral examination showed multiple caries, gingival hyperplasia, class II malocclusion with 14 mm overjet and deep overbite. During the first 3 years of a 7-year follow-up period, six episodes of anterior tooth trauma due to seizure attack occurred. The

Extraction of maxillary second molars in the treatment of Class II malocclusion.

The results of treatment following the extraction of maxillary second molars for Class II correction were evaluated. Records (cephalograms, orthopantomograms, and models) of 32 patients treated with maxillary second molar extraction were analyzed. Cephalograms taken before and after treatment were traced and 18 variables were compared. Changes in the axial inclination of the erupted third molars relative to the occlusal plane were measured on the orthopantomograms. The form and the position (eruption in occlusion, rotations) of the maxillary third molars were evaluated on the models. The avera

Virtual reality used in undergraduate orthodontic education.

INTRODUCTION: Undergraduate dental students frequently have reduced clinical experience which presents a challenge for their dental education. Previously, we developed a virtual reality (VR) simulating the whole clinical treatment process of a patient with angle Class II division 1 malocclusion, and the VR also helped to explain some important orthodontic concepts. As a novel teaching tool, this study aims to compare the effects of VR versus traditional case analysis by Power Point (PPT) in inspiring student learning motivation and evaluating learning experience. Efficacy of a modified twin block appliance compared with the traditional twin block appliance in children with hyperdivergent mandibular retrognathia: protocol for a single-centre, single-blind, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Compensatory mouth breathing, caused by nasopharyngeal obstructive diseases, is the main cause of hyperdivergent mandibular retrognathia in children. Such deformities require effective growth guidance before pubertal growth peaks. The traditional mandibular advancement device, twin block (TB), can guide the forward development of the mandible. However, the side effect of increasing the vertical dimension of the lower facial third, worsens the facial profile of children with divergent growth trends. To solve this problem, a modified TB (LLTB) appliance was designed to control the
