Mandibular Gonial Angle Measurement with Anatomical Precision in 3D Volume Rendered CT Images.

PURPOSE: This letter presents a novel, simple, and reproducible method for measuring the gonial angle using open-source imaging software, 3D Slicer. The main research question was whether a standardized three-dimensional (3D) approach could provide a practical and accurate alternative to traditional two-dimensional cephalometric techniques. METHODS: High resolution head computed tomography (CT) scans were imported into 3D Slicer (version 5.6.2). The mandible was reconstructed in 3D using volume rendering module. Two three-point planes were defined: one tangential to the mandibular body's lowe

A complementary radiographic projection of the equine temporomandibular joint.

The complexity of the equine skull makes the temporomandibular joint a difficult area to evaluate radiographically. The goal of this study was to determine the optimal angle for a complementary radiographic projection of the equine temporomandibular joint based on a computed tomography (CT) cadaver study. CT was performed on six equine cadaver heads of horses that were euthanized for other reasons than temporomandibular joint disease. After the CT examination, 3D reconstruction of the equine skull was performed to subjectively determine the angle for a complementary radiographic projection of

Functional Biomaterials and 3D Bioprinting Approaches for Temporomandibular Joint Reconstruction: A Narrative Review.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized synovial joint responsible for essential functions such as mastication, speech, and swallowing. Owing to its unique anatomical organization, complex biomechanics, and heterogeneous tissue composition, regeneration of the TMJ remains one of the greatest challenges in craniofacial reconstructive surgery. Conventional treatment modalities, including autologous grafts, alloplastic prostheses, and total joint replacement, are associated with several limitations, including donor-site morbidity, prosthetic wear, limited biological integration,

Influence of pressure on mandibular angiosomes: What implications for decellularization?

The vascularization of bone still holds several unknowns, crucial to future developments in reconstructive surgery: both for bone transplantation and decellularized allograft. This study introduces a novel method to analyze pressure-dependent vascular territories in the human mandible, with direct implications for the optimization of decellularization by perfusion protocols. Traditional anatomical approaches have struggled to delineate perfusion territories due to the complexity of multiple arterial inputs and the dynamic nature of blood flow. Our methodology integrates pressure-controlled per
