A Causal Validation augmented Temporal Convolutional Framework for Brain Effective Connectivity Networks Estimation.

Advancements in neuroimaging have facilitated unprecedented insights into brain connectivity, making the study of brain effective connectivity networks (ECNs) essential for understanding neurological functions and diseases. Recently, neural networks (NNs) have emerged as powerful tools for ECN estimation due to their prominent universal approximation ability and less reliance on prior knowledge. However, most NN-based approaches fail to eliminate redundant temporal information and lack rigorous causal validation mechanisms. This paper introduces a novel end-to-end framework for estimating ECNs

Automatic detection of Parkinsonian speech using wavelet scattering features.

In this paper, we study the automatic detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) from speech using features computed by a two-layer wavelet scattering network, which generates locally stable and translation-invariant features at each layer. The scattering features are encoded using Fisher vectors to obtain a single fixed-size feature vector per utterance. Support vector machine and feed-forward neural network classifiers are trained using the utterance-level features to perform the detection task (healthy vs PD). The results obtained with the PC-GITA database revealed that the proposed approach sho

Non-Contact Screening of OSAHS Using Multi-Feature Snore Segmentation and Deep Learning.

Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a prevalent sleep disorder strongly linked to increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk. While prior studies have explored snore-based analysis for OSAHS, they have largely focused on either detection or classification in isolation. Here, we present a two-stage framework that integrates precise snoring event detection with deep learning-based classification. In the first stage, we develop an Adaptive Multi-Feature Fusion Endpoint Detection algorithm (AMFF-ED), which leverages short-time energy, spectral entropy, zero-crossing rate, and spe

Efficient segmentation of intraoperative anatomical landmarks in laparoscopic cholecystectomy based on deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard procedure for the treatment of benign gallbladder diseases, but there is the risk of intraoperative bile duct injury, which can lead to surgical failure and cause significant social and economic burden. When surgeons rely on visual inspection to identify tissue structures during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, subjective factors such as experience, psychological factors, and fatigue can compromise the intraoperative recognition of anatomic landmarks. The positioning of anatomical landmarks by the surgeon in the pre-dissection phase of

A multidimensional transformer-CNN network trained with incomplete ultrasonic radiofrequency data of blood for red blood cell aggregation classification.

Evaluation of red blood cell (RBC) aggregation is crucial for early detection of diseases such as ischemic cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, deep vein thrombosis, and sickle cell disease. Ultrasound, a non-invasive and real-time technique, is widely used for monitoring RBC behavior. However, measurement inaccuracies caused by instrumentation and human error can introduce data anomalies, degrading the generalization capability of deep learning models. To address this issue, we propose a Multidimensional Transformer-CNN (MTCN) model trained on incomplete data. Specifically, 20%

Balanced multi-modality knowledge mining for RGB-infrared object detection.

RGB-Infrared object detection aims to fuse the complementary information of two modalities to improve the accuracy and robustness of the detector. Given the advantages of transformer in modeling long-range dependencies, transformer-based cross-modality fusion methods have been continuously proposed and achieved satisfactory results. However, existing methods face two major challenges: 1) it is difficult to balance the mining of intra-modality specific knowledge and inter-modality complementary knowledge; 2) a single attention layer only models the relationship between token features of the sam

Modulatory feedback determines attentional object segmentation in a model of the ventral stream.

Studies in neuroscience inspired progress in the design of artificial neural networks (ANNs), and, vice versa, ANNs provide new insights into the functioning of brain circuits. So far, the focus has been on how ANNs can help to explain the tuning of neurons at various stages of the visual cortical hierarchy. However, the role of modulatory feedback connections, which play a role in attention and perceptual organization, has not yet been resolved. The present study presents a biologically plausible neural network that performs scene segmentation and can shift attention using modulatory feedback

Advanced biomimetic robotic hand with EMG lifelong learning and recognition.

The design and implementation of a suitable robotic hand for a toddler-sized humanoid robot is a challenging task. The main purpose of this work is to optimize the design of an anthropomorphic robotic hand and control it by using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals. Isolation forest backward particle swarm optimization is used to optimize the robotic hand. The fitness function is defined by thumb opposability and the ability to grasp objects based on grasp taxonomy. Learning without forgetting (LWF) is adopted to train sEMG signal data sequentially, and the consequently learned model is u

From physics to prediction: genetic algorithm-optimized neural network using hansen solubility parameters for pharmaceutical solubility in neat and mixed solvents.

Reliable prediction of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) solubility in complex solvent systems remains challenging. Existing models often sacrifice generalizability for accuracy or have limited applicability due to implementation complexity. The current study presents a practical, streamlined modeling framework requiring only temperature, solvent composition, and Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) - information that is simple and readily accessible. These parameters serve as inputs for an effective and easy-to-apply model: the multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLPANN). Bey

Investigating the course and predictors of desire to void based on heart rate variability.

Urinary incontinence is closely related to the motor ability and toileting tasks. Some nursing home residents with limited mobility who cannot reach the bathroom in time highly depend on caregivers for toileting assistance. However, nursing home staffing is often insufficient to meet the needs of all residents. Monitoring the desire to urinate is vital to minimize functional dependence and improve the quality of life of older people. Improved reliability of the desire to void monitoring requires exploring more effective monitoring methods. In this paper, we observed the changes in heart rate v

SERS on analyte-enriched blood for rapid, culture-free sepsis recognition and causative pathogen identification with super operational neural networks.

Sepsis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, yet routine diagnostics are slow, culture-dependent, and often lack the sensitivity or specificity required for early intervention. Prior studies rarely demonstrate clinical-grade performance on blood culture samples or in independent external cohorts. We address these gaps with a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and deep learning workflow (SERS-DL) that performs sepsis instance recognition and causative pathogen identification directly from target-analyte enriched blood. We assembled a primary dataset of SERS spectra acquired from
