OBJECTIVES: The feasibility and safety of direct needle insufflation to create pneumoretroperitoneum was assessed by an imaging study and clinical experience.
METHODS: A total of 10 patients without previous retroperitoneal surgery or diseases received computed tomography scans of the retroperitoneum 2 cm above the iliac crest. A comparative analysis of a prospective study of 31 patients presenting with primary amenorrhoea is given. Most patients were studied by radiodiagnostic pelvic pneumography as well as chromosome analysis. The radiological findings were confirmed by laparotomy, thus vindicating pelvic pneumography as an accurate diagnostic tool in this environment. The commonest causes of primary amenorrhoea are Müllerian and ovarian agenesis singly or in combination. Occasionally, tuberculosis may also present as primary amenorrhoea.

Four patients who had jejunoileal bypass for morbid obesity had increased frequency of diarrhea, diffuse abdominal tenderness and distention, and fever to 104 degrees F. Roentgenographic studies disclosed multiple distended loops in the bypassed bowel with few air fluid levels.
