Optimizing research in symptomatic uterine fibroids with development of a computable phenotype for use with electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Women with symptomatic uterine fibroids can report a myriad of symptoms, including pain, bleeding, infertility, and psychosocial sequelae. Optimizing fibroid research requires the ability to enroll populations of women with image-confirmed symptomatic uterine fibroids. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to develop an electronic health record-based algorithm to identify women with symptomatic uterine fibroids for a comparative effectiveness study of medical or surgical treatments on quality-of-life measures. Using an iterative process and text-mining techniques, an effective computable p

Administrative Databases: Friend or Foe in Paediatric Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy (CM) is a rare childhood disease associated with morbidity and mortality. Limited data exist on paediatric CM in Canada. Given the rare nature, single-centre studies are not sufficiently powered to address important questions. Therefore, administrative health data may serve as a resource for the study of childhood CM. The goal of this study was to validate the accuracy of International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-based algorithms to identify paediatric CM in health databases using a clinical registry as the gold standard. METHODS: The clinical registry was comp

Bandgap tuning strategy by cations and halide ions of lead halide perovskites learned from machine learning.

Bandgap engineering of lead halide perovskite materials is critical to achieve highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells and color tunable stable perovskite light-emitting diodes. Herein, we propose the use of machine learning as a tool to predict the bandgap of the perovskite materials from their compositions. By learning from the experimental results, machine learning algorithms present reliable performance in predicting the bandgap of the lead halide perovskites. The linear regression model can be used to manually predict the bandgap of the perovskite with the formula of Cs a FA b

A 1-h Combination Algorithm Allows Fast Rule-Out and Rule-In of Major Adverse Cardiac Events.

BACKGROUND: A 1-h algorithm based on high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) testing at presentation and again 1 h thereafter has been shown to accurately rule out acute myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the 1-h algorithm when supplemented with patient history and an electrocardiogram (ECG) (the extended algorithm) for predicting 30-day major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and to compare it with the algorithm using hs-cTnT alone (the troponin algorithm). METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled consecutive p

Practical Machine Learning Model for Early and Accurate Prediction of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Before Its Progression to an OVERT Stage.

In patients with sepsis, anticoagulant therapy is expected to have maximal efficacy when administered before the development of sepsis-induced overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This therapeutic strategy requires a valid method for real-time, early prediction of sepsis-induced DIC, which is likely to progress to an overt stage. We aimed to develop machine learning prediction models for overt DIC, based on the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria, using a large-scale electronic medical record database. This multi-center, retrospective, observational study

HGCJAMH: A Method for circRNA-Drug Sensitivity Prediction Based on Higher-Order Moment-Guided Model and Hypergraph Jumping Learning Mechanism.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a key role in regulating cellular drug sensitivity, and they hold significant promise as potential biomarkers in disease treatment and precision medicine. However, existing circRNA-drug sensitivity association (CDSA) prediction methods generally face the following challenges: high dependence on wet experiments, sparse association data leading to a high percentage of false negatives, insufficient expression of embedded features, and inadequate modeling of higher-order heterogeneous relationships. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a prediction model,

Exploring artificial intelligence from a clinical perspective: A comparison and application analysis of two facial age predictors trained on a large-scale Chinese cosmetic patient database.

BACKGROUND: Age prediction powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used as an objective technique to assess the cosmetic effect of rejuvenation surgery. Existing age-estimation models are trained on public datasets with the Caucasian race as the main reference, thus they are impractical for clinical application in Chinese patients. METHODS: To develop and select an age-estimation model appropriate for Chinese patients receiving rejuvenation treatment, we obtained a face database of 10 529 images from 1821 patients from the author's hospital and selected two representative age-estimatio

Machine learning models of clinically relevant biomarkers for the prediction of stable obstructive coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients with suspected obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), evaluation using a pre-test probability model is the key element for diagnosis; however, its accuracy is controversial. This study aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models using clinically relevant biomarkers to predict the presence of stable obstructive CAD and to compare ML models with an established pre-test probability of CAD models. METHODS: Eight machine learning models for prediction of obstructive CAD were trained on a cohort of 1,312 patients [randomly split into the training (80%) and internal val

Development and Evaluation of a Machine Learning Prediction Model for Small-for-Gestational-Age Births in Women Exposed to Radiation before Pregnancy.

Exposure to radiation has been associated with increased risk of delivering small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborns. There are no tools to predict SGA newborns in pregnant women exposed to radiation before pregnancy. Here, we aimed to develop an array of machine learning (ML) models to predict SGA newborns in women exposed to radiation before pregnancy. Patients' data was obtained from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project from 2010 to 2012. The data were randomly divided into a training dataset (n = 364) and a testing dataset (n = 91). Eight various ML models were compar

AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Dystocia Algorithm) in Prolonged Dystocic Labor: Focus on Asynclitism Degree.

Asynclitism, a misalignment of the fetal head with respect to the plane of passage through the birth canal, represents a significant obstetric challenge. High degrees of asynclitism are associated with labor dystocia, difficult operative delivery, and cesarean delivery. Despite its clinical relevance, the diagnosis of asynclitism and its influence on the outcome of labor remain matters of debate. This study analyzes the role of the degree of asynclitism (AD) in assessing labor progress and predicting labor outcome, focusing on its ability to predict intrapartum cesarean delivery (ICD) versus n

Optimized Hemodynamic Assessment to Predict Stroke Risk in Vertebrobasilar Disease: Analysis From the VERiTAS Study.

Background Atherosclerotic vertebrobasilar disease is a significant etiology of posterior circulation stroke. The prospective observational VERiTAS (Vertebrobasilar Flow Evaluation and Risk of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke) study demonstrated that distal hemodynamic status is a robust predictor of subsequent vertebrobasilar stroke risk. We sought to compare predictive models using thresholds for posterior circulation vessel flows standardized to age and vascular anatomy to optimize risk prediction. Methods and Results VERiTAS enrolled patients with recent vertebrobasilar transient ische

Left Ventricular Thrombus in Ischemic Heart Failure: Machine-learning-based Prediction of Six-month Persistence and One-year Outcomes.

Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) in ischemic heart failure carries embolic risk; tools to anticipate persistence are limited. We studied 190 consecutive patients with imaging-confirmed LVT managed with guideline-concordant anticoagulation and serial echocardiography. The primary outcome was 6-month non-regression; 1-year MACE was secondary. We combined classical statistics with explainable machine learning. CatBoost yielded the best discrimination for non-regression (CV-AUC 0.76; test accuracy 0.79). SHAP highlighted left atrial diameter, pulmonary artery pressure, platelet count, and LV end-di

Integrating ozone-reactive moieties with molecular representations of trace organic contaminants improves the prediction of ozone reaction kinetics by machine learning.

Ozone (O3) is widely applied in water treatment to abate trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), yet accurate prediction of its reaction kinetics remains challenging. Existing machine learning (ML) models generally operate as "black boxes", treating TrOC molecules as whole entities with limited mechanistic insight into O3 reactivity. As a strong electrophile, O3 reacts with TrOCs in a manner governed by the types and electronic properties of O3-reactive moieties. Hence, we developed an interpretable ML framework integrating O3-reactive moieties with molecular representations to predict the absolut
