Caregiver perspectives on safety in home dementia care.

Home safety is a significant problem for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. This focus group study is designed to gain insight into caregivers' experiences of managing safety issues and to explore application of the transtheoretical model of health behavior change (TTM) to this problem, toward development of interventions to improve safety care. Caregivers identified safety problems and management strategies, as well as barriers and factors facilitating management, that can help guide the development of interventions. Caregivers described different stages of ado

Disruptive behavior in preschoolers: associations with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and parental psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior in preschoolers is considered normative under certain circumstances; however sometimes it may be a sign of both internalizing and externalizing disorders. This study aimed to investigate the associations among children’s disruptive behavior scale scores, child ADHD symptom scores, and parents’ depression, anxiety, and stress scores. METHODS: Participants were recruited from preschools in two central districts of Denizli, Türkiye. We assessed disruptive behavior with the Multidimensional Assessment of Preschool Disruptive Behavior, child ADHD symptoms using the A

Early-life family and school impacts on adolescent conduct problems: A path analysis.

Limited research has been conducted to examine the factors during early childhood that may contribute to conduct problems in later stages of life. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between family and school environments during early childhood and conduct problems in adolescence. In Wave 1 (W1), the study recruited 502 participants, aged 5-6 years, from Hong Kong local kindergartens, with 51.4% boys. One of their parents provided information about family socioeconomic status (SES), parent-child recreational activities, and child screen time, whereas the class teacher rated their

How do childhood conduct problems, callousness and anxiety relate to later offending and adult mental disorder?

BACKGROUND: Various combinations of childhood conduct problems, callous traits and anxiety may confer increased risk of offending, psychopathic traits and mental disorders. Knowledge of these outcomes in adulthood is limited. AIMS: To compare adult criminal convictions, psychopathy checklist scores and mental disorders between five groups of men, variously defined in childhood by: (1) callous traits, (2) conduct problems, (3) conduct problems and callous traits, (4) conduct problems and callous traits and anxiety or (5) developing typically. METHOD: Teachers rated conduct problems, callous t

Clinical utility of the CBCL Dysregulation Profile in children with disruptive behavior.

BACKGROUND: Children who are severely dysregulated experience a range of concurrent and long-term impairments and psychopathology and are particularly at-risk for mood and anxiety disorders. The Child Behavior Checklist Dysregulation Profile (CBCL-DP) may be useful in identifying children who are highly dysregulated, which could facilitate early intervention. METHODS: We examined the prevalence, gender differences, parent-teacher agreement, and concurrent validity of two categorical definitions of the CBCL-DP in 348 children ages 6-12 who were clinic-referred for assessment and treatment beca

Peer relationships and prosocial behaviour differences across disruptive behaviours.

It is unclear if impairments in social functioning and peer relationships significantly differ across common developmental conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and associated callous-unemotional traits (CU traits). The current study explored sex differences and symptoms of parent- and teacher-reported psychopathology on peer relationships and prosocial behaviour in a sample of 147 referred children and adolescents (aged 5-17 years; 120 m). The results showed that increases in parent-reported ADHD Inatten

A Canadian population level analysis of the roles of irrational gambling cognitions and risky gambling practices as correlates of gambling intensity and pathological gambling.

Using population data (N = 11,562) drawn from five Canadian gambling prevalence surveys conducted between 2000 and 2005, the current study investigated the relationship between irrational gambling cognitions and risky gambling practices upon (a) gambling intensity, as measured by percent of income spent on gambling and (b) tolerance, a diagnostic indicator of pathological gambling. First, we found irrational gambling cognitions and risky gambling practices to be positively related. Second, irrational gambling cognitions moderated the relationship between risky gambling practices and gambling i

Assessing childhood maltreatment exposure using the child behavior checklist.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has broad and severe adverse effects in later life, but there are not enough studies conducted during childhood close to the time of maltreatment. Most studies have focused only on a single symptom and have not attempted to capture the global picture of CM. METHODS: We used the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to assess children's behavioral/emotional problems more comprehensively. This study leveraged 32 CM children and 29 typically developing (TD) children who have been assessed using the CBCL 4-18 from our dataset. Group comparisons of the eight sub

Early childhood eating behaviors and adolescent eating disorders.

Maladaptive eating patterns were traced longitudinally in a large random sample of children. Pickiness and concern with weight were more common in girls than in boys, and the prevalence of pickiness declined with age. No age or sex differences in family contention around meals nor in bingeing were shown. All problem behaviors showed significant stability over the 10-year span studied, beginning at ages 1 to 10. Certain eating and digestive problems in early childhood were predictive of symptoms of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in adolescence. Findings regarding prospective risks implica…

Obtaining quality data using behavioral measures of impulsivity in gambling research with Amazon's Mechanical Turk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To date, no research has examined the viability of using behavioral tasks typical of cognitive and neuropsychology within addiction populations through online recruitment methods. Therefore, we examined the reliability and validity of three behavioral tasks of impulsivity common in addiction research in a sample of individuals with a current or past history of problem gambling recruited online. METHODS: Using a two-stage recruitment process, a final sample of 110 participants with a history of problem or disordered gambling were recruited through MTurk and completed self-

The effect of physical abuse on children's social and affective status: a model of cognitive and behavioral processes explaining the association.

This study proposes a model explaining the association between physical abuse of children and children's social and affective status as one in which children's social expectations and behavior, developed within the context of abusive parenting, mediate current functioning in these two outcome domains. Subjects included one hundred 9 to 12-year-old physically abused children recruited from consecutive entries onto the New York State Register for Child Abuse for New York City and 100 case-matched classmate nonabused comparison children. Sociometric assessments were carried out in classrooms, int

Beneficial Effects of GLP-1 Agonist in a Male With Compulsive Food-Related Behavior Associated With Autism.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently display intensely repetitive, restricted thoughts, and behaviors. These behaviors have similarities to compulsions and/or obsessions in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and are primarily treated with behaviourally-based interventions and serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Due to the lack of treatment responses in many cases, however, new treatments are being sought. Here we report beneficial effects of treatment with liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog, on severe obsessive food craving, binge eating, weight gain,

Profile of Behavioral Comorbidities in Children With Fragile X Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) presents with a variety of behavioral comorbidities. Although multiple publications have reported detailed characterizations for some of them, many gaps of knowledge still remain. Therefore, we characterized the eight most common behavioral comorbidities (i.e., clinician identified behavioral concerns) in children evaluated in specialty FXS clinics. METHODS: We analyzed the pediatric FORWARD clinic-based natural history study database (1,072 males, 338 females), using multiple statistical techniques including chi-square analyses, polychoric and polyserial cor

SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH CHRONIC TIC DISORDERS.

OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence of elevated risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behavior in youth with Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorders (CTD), few studies have actually examined that relationship. This study documented the frequency and clinical correlates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a sample of children and adolescents with CTD (N = 196, range 6-18 years old). The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the Centers for Disease Control. METHOD: Youth and parents completed a battery of measures that assess

Worst Case Learning for H ∞ Consensus for Heterogeneous Multiagent Systems: A Resource-Constrained Game Approach.

This article investigates heterogeneous high-order nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) under an event-triggered mechanism (ETM). A reinforcement learning (RL)-based zero-sum game (ZSG) approach is employed to solve the robust consensus problem. To handle heterogeneity, unified-dimension state variables are constructed, auxiliary variables are defined, and consensus errors are reformulated accordingly. By applying the min-max principle, the optimal $H_{\infty } $ consensus problem is transformed into a ZSG problem, and an approximately optimal consensus protocol is derived by solving the Hamilt

Impulse and reason? Justifications in problem gambling.

People often use justifications to make desirable choices, but little is known about these justificatory thoughts in gambling. We conducted an exploratory Study 1 (n = 101) and a confirmatory Study 2 (n = 154) using online surveys, recruiting gamblers with prior and current experience of trying to reduce their gambling. Using justifications recognized in the domains of eating and consumer behavior (e.g., prior use of effort, feelings of achievement), we examined whether justifications were associated with problem gambling severity, and whether they explained additional variance above trait imp

Effects of Fetal Substance Exposure on Offspring Substance Use.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol and drugs is associated with physical, cognitive, and behavioral problems across the offspring's lifespan and an increased risk of alcohol and drug use in adolescent and young adult offspring. These prenatal effects continue to be evident after control for demographic background and parental alcohol and drug use. Behavior problems in childhood and adolescence associated with prenatal exposures may serve as a mediator of the prenatal exposure effects on offspring substance use.
