Interactions between spatial and spatiotemporal information in spatiotemporal boundary formation.

The surface and boundaries of an object generally move in unison, so the motion of a surface could provide information about the motion of its boundaries. Here we report the results of three experiments on spatiotemporal boundary formation that indicate that information about the motion of a surface does influence the formation of its boundaries. In Experiment 1, shape identification at low texture densities was poorer for moving forms in which stationary texture was visible inside than for forms in which the stationary texture was visible only outside. In Experiment 2, the disruption found in

Masking-level differences in older adults: the effect of the level of the masking noise.

In Experiment 1, masking-level differences (MLDs) for a 500-Hz tone at five masker levels were obtained from younger and older adults. For both age groups, there were no reliable increases in MLD once the spectrum level of the masker exceeded 27 dB SPL. MLDs were larger for younger than for older adults over the range of masker levels tested. In Experiment 2, the levels of both the signal and the masker in one ear were attenuated by either 15 or 30 dB relative to their level in the other ear, which was fixed at a spectrum level of 47 dB SPL. MLDs for both age groups declined with increasing IA

Inhibition of naming by rhyming primes.

The priming effects of graphemically similar (e.g., HOSE) and graphemically dissimilar (e.g., ROWS) rhymes on the naming of target words (NOSE) were examined at prime-target stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) of 36, 70, and 250 msec. A four-field presentation procedure was used of mask-prime-mask-target. The effects of rhyme primes were measured relative to those of nonrhyming control primes (CHEF, DISH) that matched the rhymes in frequency and length and shared no letters in the same positions. At SOAs of 36 and 70 msec, rhyme priming was inhibitory and equal for graphemically similar and grap

Speaking rate, voice-onset time, and quantity: the search for higher-order invariants for two Icelandic speech cues.

The temporal structure of speech has been shown to be highly variable. Speaking rate, stress, and other factors influence the duration of individual speech sounds. The highly elastic nature of speech would seem to pose a problem for the listener, especially with respect to the perception of temporal speech cues such as voice-onset time (VOT) and quantity: How does the listener disentangle those temporal changes which are linguistically significant from those which are extrinsic to the linguistic message? This paper reports data on the behavior of two Icelandic speech cues at different speaking

Letter identification declines with increasing retinal eccentricity at the same rate for normal and dyslexic readers.

It has recently been claimed (Geiger & Lettvin, 1987; Perry, Dember, Warm, & Sacks, 1989) that the acuity/eccentricity function is flatter in dyslexics than in normal subjects, with dyslexics showing better performance in the periphery and worse performance at fixation. In these studies, all target letters were presented to the right of fixation, a procedural flaw inviting subjects to optimize performance by directing attention and/or gaze to the right of the designated fixation point. It is suggested that dyslexic and normal readers may differ in the degree to which they might adopt the optim

Incident Falls Across Concordant and Discordant Profiles of Concerns About Falling and Functional Mobility in Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about falling and impaired functional mobility are established fall-risk indicators, but prospective fall risk is less clear when subjective concerns and objective mobility are discordant. We compared incident falls across joint profiles of concerns about falling and Timed Up and Go (TUG) performance, with particular attention to older adults with fast TUG performance and concerns versus those with slow TUG performance and no concerns. METHODS: This one-year prospective cohort study included 2,445 community-dwelling adults aged 60-79 years in Zhejiang Province, China. TUG

A Novel Investigation of an In-Scanner Alternative to the Cold Pressor Test in Healthy Individuals.

The cold pressor task (CPT) is widely used to study tonic pain during acute and chronic conditions and is often used as a conditioning stimulus to activate descending pain control systems. However, logistical challenges in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) limit its application, hindering the understanding of CPT's neural dynamics. To address this, we acquired resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) data from 30 healthy participants before, during and after immersion in gelled-cold water, the closest in-scanner alternative to date to CPT for prolonged stimulation. Participants provided subjective p

The Effect of Shift Work on the Overall Health Status of Hospital-Employed Nursing Staff in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is a profession frequently organized around shift work in order to guarantee the continuity of care throughout the 24 hours. However, working in shifts is coupled with the desynchronization of circadian rhythms and may result in adverse effects on nurses' health. Our previous work has demonstrated the presence of increased stress levels, reduced coping abilities and diminished life enjoyment in shift work nurses in comparison to those working only in accordance with the daily schedule. Here we aimed to appraise the effects of shift work on their overall health status. SUBJ

Genetically Determined Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation and Hundreds of Health Outcomes in the UK Biobank and the FinnGen Population: A Phenome-Wide Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) has been used as a biomarker of chronic low-grade inflammation in observational studies. We aimed to determine whether genetically determined CRP was associated with hundreds of human phenotypes to guide anti-inflammatory interventions. METHODS: We used individual data from the UK Biobank to perform a phenome-wide two-stage least squares (2SLS) Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis for CRP with 879 diseases. Summary-level data from the FinnGen consortium were utilized to perform phenome-wide two-sample MR analysis on 821 phenotypes. Systematic two-sample M

Multisensory Integration Enhances Temporal Coding in Ventral Cochlear Nucleus Bushy Cells.

Temporal coding of auditory stimuli is critical for understanding communication signals. The bushy cell, a major output neuron of the ventral cochlear nucleus, can "phase-lock" precisely to pure tones and the envelopes of complex stimuli. Bushy cells are also putative recipients of brainstem somatosensory projections and could therefore play a role in perception of communication signals because multisensory integration is required for such complex sound processing. Here, we examine the role of multisensory integration in temporal coding in bushy cells by activating the spinal trigeminal nucleu

Investigation of energy weighting using an energy discriminating photon counting detector for breast CT.

PURPOSE: Breast CT is an emerging imaging technique that can portray the breast in 3D and improve visualization of important diagnostic features. Early clinical studies have suggested that breast CT has sufficient spatial and contrast resolution for accurate detection of masses and microcalcifications in the breast, reducing structural overlap that is often a limiting factor in reading mammographic images. For a number of reasons, image quality in breast CT may be improved by use of an energy resolving photon counting detector. In this study, the authors investigate the improvements in image q

The measurement and treatment of suppression in amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a developmental disorder of the visual cortex, is one of the leading causes of visual dysfunction in the working age population. Current estimates put the prevalence of amblyopia at approximately 1-3%(1-3), the majority of cases being monocular(2). Amblyopia is most frequently caused by ocular misalignment (strabismus), blur induced by unequal refractive error (anisometropia), and in some cases by form deprivation. Although amblyopia is initially caused by abnormal visual input in infancy, once established, the visual deficit often remains when normal visual input has been restored

[The so-called body-mind problem].

THE PROBLEM: Even psychosomatic researchers seem to want to avoid the so-called body-mind problem, which is actually a mind-brain problem. In line with Beckermann (2008), the first the four possible positions on the mind-brain problem are presented. The debate over the past 100 years has revolved around the question of whether mental events are ontologically independent of brain physiology or whether they are in fact entirely determined by it. Such a physicalism approach based on properties (i.e., mental characteristics or phenomena are physical or can be completely reduced to physical charact

Visual vertigo: symptom assessment, spatial orientation and postural control.

Certain patients with balance disorders report a 'visual vertigo' in which their symptoms are provoked or aggravated by specific visual contexts (e.g. supermarkets, driving or movement of objects). In order to determine the causes of visual vertigo (VV), we assessed symptoms, anxiety and the influence of disorienting visual stimuli in 21 such patients. In 17 out of 21 patients, a peripheral vestibular disorder was diagnosed. Sixteen bilateral labyrinthine-defective subjects (LDS) and 25 normal subjects served as controls. Questionnaire assessment showed that the levels of trait anxiety and chi

How the Brain Interprets Pain in Autistic People: Does Sex Matter?

BACKGROUND: While psychophysical studies suggest heightened pain sensitivity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the relationship between subjective pain experience and cortical neurophysiological responses and whether this relationship is sex-dependent, remains poorly understood. METHODS: This cross-sectional two-group comparison study included 50 adults with Level 1 ASD and 52 age-, sex- and IQ-matched typically developing controls (TDC). Pain ratings and cortical contact heat-evoked potentials (CHEPs) were recorded in response to 52°C phasic heat stimuli. ANOVA and regressi

PAINLESS: protocol for a triple-blinded randomized sham-controlled multicenter trial of home-based transcranial electrical stimulation for pain management in patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common debilitating symptom in cancer patients and its management remains a challenge. Among the non-pharmacological analgesic treatment options, low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) represents a new unique analgesic modality. However, the evidence of tES effectiveness for cancer pain is limited, while the mechanisms of pain relief due to tES are still poorly understood. We propose to test the efficacy of repetitive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and alternating current stimulation (tACS) in cancer pain patients, and attempt to understan

Innova4Health: an integrated approach for prevention of recurrence and personalized treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition characterized by persistent low mood, cognitive and physical symptoms, anhedonia (loss of interest in activities), and suicidal ideation. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts depression will become the leading cause of disability by 2030. While biological markers remain essential for understanding MDD's pathophysiology, recent advancements in social signal processing and environmental monitoring hold promise. Wearable technologies, including smartwatches and air purifiers with environmental sensors, can

Idiopathic Non-Dental Facial Pain Syndromes in Italian Children: A Clinical Case Series.

The orofacial pain syndromes (OFPs) are a heterogeneous group of syndromes characterized by painful attacks involving the orofacial structures. They may be summarily subdivided into two great categories: (1) orofacial pain mainly attributed to dental disorders such as dentoalveolar and myofascial orofacial pain or temporomandibular joint (TM) pain; (2) orofacial pain mainly attributed to non-dental pain as neuralgias, facial localization of primary headaches or idiopathic orofacial pain. The second group is uncommon, often described by single case reports, can often show overlapping symptoms w
