Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are co-endemic in some parts of Europe, however, their distribution differs despite a common tick vector and comparable animal hosts. The Damara mole-rat, Cryptomys damarensis, has no access to obvious dietary or endogenous sources of vitamin D. We tested the hypotheses that mineral metabolism in these animals is independent of vitamin D status but rather is affected by dietary calcium (Ca) content. The analysis of trichinellosis patients' sera was performed by Western blot against a crude extract of Trichinella spiralis. Eight distinctive bands from 38 to 104 kDa were present in most of the patients' sera as a striking homogeneous response. The host specificity of Cryptosporidium sp. infecting chickens was evaluated by oral inoculation of oocysts into 6 different species of neonatal rodents, adult nude mice (athymic), neonatal conventional and gnotobiotic pigs, turkeys, muscovy ducks and bobwhite quail. Various studies on trichinosis in Thailand since the first outbreak in 1962 up until 15 July 1983 are reviewed. There were 67 outbreaks, affecting 2,792 persons and resulting in 85 deaths. Most of the outbreaks occurred in the north of the country which is mountainous. Hilltribe pigs and wild boars were the common sources of human infection. Sera collected from 691 dogs and 231 rodents in South Africa were tested in parallel by the passive haemagglutination (PHA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibodies to the Fraction 1 antigen of the plague bacillus (Yersinia pseudotuberculosis subsp. pestis). Field studies of Colorado tick fever (CTF) in small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in 1974 established that Eutamias minimus and Spermophilus lateralis were the most important hosts for CTF virus and were the source of virus for immature stages of the tick vector, Dermacentor andersoni. Six species of rodents from Kern County, California, were inoculated subcutaneously with western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus to determine their susceptibility to infection and their potential as natural hosts.
