Enamel defects and Lyonization in focal dermal hypoplasia.

We report a pattern of enamel hypoplasia in focal dermal hypoplasia similar to that found in females with X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. Three cases of focal dermal hypoplasia are described, with specific focus on the oral and dental features. In these cases the teeth all had vertical grooving with notching of the incisal or cuspal tips. Also recorded were blunt roots of taurodont form with open apices and missing teeth in 1 case. Oral papillomas were present in 2 cases. The pattern of enamel defects is attributed to Lyonization, which is consistent with the pattern of skin and bone lesions

Correlation between mandibular central incisor proclination and gingival recession during fixed appliance therapy.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether proclination of mandibular central incisors during fixed appliance therapy results in gingival recession. Complete records of 67 patients (39 female and 28 male patients; mean age, 16.4 years; age range, 10-45 years) were used in this retrospective case-control study. Using pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms, the change in mandibular central incisor inclination was measured to divide the patients into an experimental group (proclination) and a control group (no proclination). Changes in clinical crown length were determined fr

Effect of appliance reactivation after decay of initial activation on osteoclasts, tooth movement, and root resorption.

Clinical orthodontists frequently reactivate appliances following decay. Studies of tooth movement and tissue responses following reactivations indicate that linear tooth movement and rapid recruitment of osteoclasts can be achieved if reactivation is timed to coincide with the latter part of the bone remodeling cycle initiated by the first activation. Both can be delayed if reactivations are timed for the early part of the previous cycle. The objective of this study was to examine tooth movement, root resorption, and osteoclast recruitment following appliance reactivation after the first acti

Treatment of a perforating inflammatory external root resorption with mineral trioxide aggregate and histologic examination after extraction.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) requires damage or loss of the protective layer and an inflammatory process in the unprotected root surface. Infection of the pulp space can occur after a serious injury and stimulate an inflammatory response. When the inflammatory stimulus is long-standing, the destructive phase will continue until the stimulation is removed. METHODS: This article describes the use of cone-beam computed tomography scanning in the diagnosis and management of a perforating IERR in tooth #10 with a 17-month follow-up and histologic examination after ext

Quantified retrospective biomonitoring of fetal and infant elemental exposure using LA-ICP-MS analysis of deciduous dentin in three contrasting human cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Spatial elemental analysis of deciduous tooth dentin combined with odontochronological estimates can provide an early life (in utero to ~2 years of age) history of inorganic element exposure and status. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the importance of data normalization to a certified reference material to enable between-study comparisons, using populations with assumed contrasting elemental exposures. METHODS: We used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) of dentin to derive a history of elemental composition from three distinct cohort studies: a pre

Clinical outcomes of regenerative endodontic procedures compared with apexification in young immature necrotic teeth: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

Immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulps present significant therapeutic challenges due to thin dentinal walls, wide-open apices, and poor fracture resistance. Apexification has traditionally been used to induce apical closure, but it does not promote further root development. Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) aim to restore biologic vitality and continue root maturation. This systematic review synthesizes randomized controlled trial (RCT) evidence comparing clinical and radiographic outcomes of REPs and apexification in young patients.
