Trial of chlorhexidine gluconate for fungal corneal ulcers.

AIMS: Suppurative corneal ulcers due to filamentous fungi are a serious and intractable problem in many tropical developing countries. In vitro studies and a small pilot study have shown that chlorhexidine gluconate is effective. The aim was to establish the optimum concentration which would be appropriate to use in a larger randomized clinical trial. METHODS: A masked randomized clinical trial of three concentrations of chlorhexidine compared with natamycin 5% was carried out in consecutive patients with established corneal ulcers shown by microscopy to contain fungal hyphae and later proven

Topical ocular administration of the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide arrests hyperphosphorylated tau-triggered diabetic retinal neurodegeneration via activation of GLP-1R/Akt/GSK3β signaling.

Diabetic retinal neurodegeneration, in particular synaptic neurodegeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) occurring before RGCs apoptosis, may represent the earliest event in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Our previous study identified hyperphosphorylated-tau as a critical toxic mediator in diabetic RGCs synaptic neurodegeneration. Thus, therapeutic agents targeting to tau may appear as a promising strategy to arrest the progression of DR. The glucagon-like-peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists, including liraglutide, can ameliorate neurodegenerative features in models of Al

Effects of topical erythropoietin on healing experimentally-induced avascular scleral damage in a rabbit model.

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of topical erythropoietin on the healing process of induced necrotizing scleritis and to evaluate the ocular side effects of this treatment modality in a rabbit model. Necrotizing scleritis was induced in 8 New Zealand albino rabbits. The animals were then randomly divided into one of two groups: a treated group administered a topical erythropoietin-containing cellulose-based gel every 8 h or a control group treated with a cellulose-based gel without erythropoietin every 8 h. The sizes of the lesions measured at different time points wer

Management of Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia with Topical and Intralesional Interferon Alpha 2B in Mexicans.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is the most common nonpigmented ocular surface neoplasm and it can originate from the conjunctiva and/ or corneal epithelium. Since the rate of recurrence after surgical excision is high, chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic agents such as interferon alpha-2b (IFN α-2b) have been used for its treatment. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to describe the demographic variables of patients with OSSN treated with IFN α-2b and to describe the outcomes of its use in Mexican patients, treated between 2011 and 2017 at Instituto de Oftalmología Fundaci

Nanostructured lipid carriers containing rapamycin for prevention of corneal fibroblasts proliferation and haze propagation after burn injuries: In vitro and in vivo.

Chemical burns are a major cause of corneal haze and blindness. Corticosteroids are commonly used after corneal burns to attenuate the severity of the inflammation-related fibrosis. While research efforts have been aimed toward application of novel therapeutics. In the current study, a novel drug delivery system based nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were designed to treat corneal alkaline burn injury. Rapamycin, a potent inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin pathway, was loaded in NLCs (rapa-NLCs), and the NLCs were characterized. Cell viability assay, cellular uptake of NLCs, and in

The Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study: a randomized trial determines that topical ocular hypotensive medication delays or prevents the onset of primary open-angle glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States and worldwide. Three to 6 million people in the United States are at increased risk for developing POAG because of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), or ocular hypertension. There is no consensus on the efficacy of medical treatment in delaying or preventing the onset of POAG in individuals with elevated IOP. Therefore, we designed a randomized clinical trial, the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety and efficacy of topical ocular hypotensive medic
