Antimicrobial dressings for the prevention of catheter-related infections in newborn infants with central venous catheters.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheters (CVCs) provide secured venous access in neonates. Antimicrobial dressings applied over the CVC sites have been proposed to reduce catheter-related blood stream infection (CRBSI) by decreasing colonisation. However, there may be concerns on the local and systemic adverse effects of these dressings in neonates. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the effectiveness and safety of antimicrobial (antiseptic or antibiotic) dressings in reducing CVC-related infections in newborn infants. Had there been relevant data, we would have evaluated the effects of antimicrobial dressi

Preparation of spleen aminopeptide-loaded pH-responsive oral hydrogel microspheres for improving recurrent respiratory infection in children.

Direct oral intervention of spleen aminopeptide (SA) would be limited because of its varied swelling and release rate in different pH environments of digestive fluids. Herein, pH-responsive hydrogel microspheres (3.67 ± 0.04 mm) with positive SA-loaded chitosan (Cs) core and negative alginate (ALG) shell were prepared. Entrapment efficiency was 76.22% and loading rate of SA was 35.17%. Besides the hydrogen bonding, a strong core/shell structure was constructed by forming imine bond via the Schiff base reaction of amino group in Cs with ketone group on SA. In vitro simulated digestion showed th

Interlaced 2D cellulose networks with molecular enrichment capability for sensitive SERS detection of sweat biomarkers.

Efficient localization of analytes near plasmonic hotspots remains a major challenge for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection in complex liquid-phase systems. Herein, an interlaced cellulose-based porous membrane composed of dissolving pulp fibers (DPFs), mechanically ground nanofibers (MGNFs), sodium alginate (SA), and Ag nanoparticles was developed as a molecular enrichment-assisted SERS platform for sweat biomarker determination. The hierarchical porous architecture provided interconnected transport channels and abundant interfacial adsorption sites, facilitating analyte reten

Support-Enabled 3D Printing of Complex Anisotropic Hydrogel Structures Using Cellulose-Based Inks: Pathways Toward Biomimetic Human Aorta Models.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing of hydrogels has enabled new directions in biomedical engineering, soft material design, and biofabrication. However, unsupported hydrogel inks often collapse under their own weight or deform during printing, limiting achievable geometries. Herein, we present a reproducible, standardized support system combining a nanofibrillated cellulose/sodium alginate (NFC/ALG) structural ink with a cellulose-based sacrificial support ink composed of NFC, hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and CaCl2. The process operates in open air, in contrast to immersion-bath methods such as

An in situ-forming hydrogel with a sol-spray system promotes diabetic wound healing via synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Chronic diabetic wounds remain a substantial clinical challenge, largely attributable to sustained inflammation, excessive oxidative stress, and deficient tissue regeneration. Herein, an in situ-forming hydrogel fabricated using a dual-component sol-spray system (AGBS-IG) is designed to effectively modulate the inflammatory-oxidative microenvironment and accelerate diabetic wound healing. The injectable sol component, composed of sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, and itaconic acid, enables conformal filling of irregular wound beds and provides intrinsic anti-inflammatory activity, while the

Injectable polysaccharide-based hydrogel delivering Poria cocos extracellular vesicles promotes hair regeneration in androgenetic alopecia via Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is characterized by progressive hair follicle miniaturization driven by premature follicle regression. While extracellular vesicles (EVs) are potent bioactive therapeutics, their clinical translation is hindered by the low yields and poor stability of mammalian-derived sources. Herein, we developed an injectable biomacromolecular hydrogel composed of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMCNa), sodium alginate (SA), and hyaluronic acid (HA) to deliver plant-derived Poria cocos extracellular vesicles (PCEVs) for the topical treatment of AGA. This polysaccharide matrix was

Preparation and Characterization of Biopolymeric-Based Orally Dissolving Mucoadhesive Hydrogels Loaded With Rosuvastatin for the Effective Treatment of Aphthous Ulcer.

The primary objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a sustained-release mucoadhesive hydrogel loaded with Rosuvastatin (RSV) to enhance the treatment of aphthous ulcers. By leveraging the pleiotropic anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair properties of RSV, the study aimed to overcome the rapid clearance and low efficacy associated with conventional oral gels and mouthwashes. Mucoadhesive hydrogels were formulated using Carbopol 934 and sodium alginate via a freeze-thaw crosslinking technique. Four formulations (F1-F4) were prepared and evaluated for morphology, swelling behavior, vis

Preparation and characterization of polysaccharide-based conductive hydrogels for nerve repair.

Peripheral nerve injury is a serious medical condition, but the limited availability of autologous grafts often delays timely treatment for many patients. The implantation of functional hydrogels with good biocompatibility provides an effective solution to this challenge. In this study, a novel chitosan derivative, choline functionalized catechol carboxymethyl chitosan (CF-Catechol-CMCS), was synthesized by modifying carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) with choline functionalized (CF) molecule and catechol. CF-Catechol-CMCS, sodium alginate (SA), and pyrrole monomer (Py) were then combined, crosslin

Viscoelastic hydrogels regulate adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells for nucleus pulposus regeneration.

Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often attributed to intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration with loss of the functional nucleus pulposus (NP). Regenerative strategies utilizing biomaterials and stem cells are promising for NP repair. Human NP tissue is highly viscoelastic, relaxing stress rapidly under deformation. However, the impact of tissue-specific viscoelasticity on the activities of adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the role of matrix viscoelasticity in regulating ASC differentiation for IVD regeneration. Viscoela

Abalone-Inspired Adhesive and Photo-Responsive Microparticle Delivery Systems for Periodontal Drug Therapy.

Antibiotics provide promising strategies for treating periodontitis, while their delivery and controllable release with desired oral retention remain challenging. Here, inspired by the unique suction-cup structures of abalones, a novel adhesive and photo-responsive microparticle (MP) delivery system is developed to treat periodontitis through microfluidic electrospray technology. Such MPs are generated by quickly ionic cross-linking of sodium alginate together with photo-curing of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate of the distorted microfluidic droplets during their high-speed dropping into calc

Photoelectrochemical sensor for detection Hg2+ based on in situ generated MOFs-like structures.

Trace analysis of mercury ions (Hg2+) is of great significance to human health and environmental protection. In this work, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of Hg2+ based on the MOFs-like composite/CdS quantum dots (QDs) as photoactive substrate materials. The MOFs-like composite in situ formed by hydrophobically modified alginate (HMA) with europium ion (Eu3+) not only offered a friendly platform for bioconjugation but also resulted in enhancing sensor photocurrent response. Furthermore, the immobilized thymidine-rich probe DNA on the

Dual-Engineered Hydrogels from Shared Precursors: Injectable Conformability and Janus Asymmetric Adhesion for Emergency Hemostasis and Accelerated Wound Healing.

Dual-engineered hydrogels fabricated from shared precursors (gelatin (GA), oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), folic acid (FA), and cerium(III) ions (Ce3+)) are developed for rapid hemostasis and accelerated wound healing. The injectable hydrogels achieve conformal adaptation to irregular wounds via shear-thinning behavior and sustain FA/Ce3+ release, while the Janus hydrogels feature asymmetric adhesion (hydrophilic-hydrophobic interfaces) for instant tissue sealing and contamination resistance. Both hydrogels demonstrate exceptional hemostatic efficiency, achieving clotting times <60 s in vitro
