Swine brucellosis by Brucella suis biovar 2 is an emerging disease whose control is based on serological testing and culling. However, current serological tests detect antibodies to the O-polysaccharide (O/PS) moiety of Brucella smooth lipopolysaccharide (S-LPS), and thus lack specificity when infections by Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 and other gram-negative bacteria carrying cross-reacting O/PS occur. Relapse after apparently successful treatment of coccidioidomycosis has been a problem with both amphotericin B and the azoles. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 34 patients who required therapy for coccidioidomycosis between 1973 and 1993; 10 relapsed and 25 (one patient received two courses of therapy) did not relapse during follow-up. Animal brucellosis is thought to be present in small ruminants, cattle, and camels in Libya, particularly in the west coastal strip. Brucella spp. were isolated from an abortion case submitted for laboratory examination 8 months after the first clinical symptoms appeared in a kennel consisting of 31 dogs. 45 cases of aseptic meningitis/meningoencephalitis were studied with regard to enteroviral etiology by virus isolation and solid-phase reverse immunosorbent test (SPRIST), a cross-reacting test for enterovirus IgM. A total of 11,460 women in the first 4 months of pregnancy, either exposed to or with suspected clinical rubella were tested for rubella antibody during an extensive epidemic of this disease in 1972.
