Leveraging serology to titrate immunisation programme functionality for diphtheria in Madagascar.

Diphtheria is a potentially devastating disease whose epidemiology remains poorly described in many settings, including Madagascar. Diphtheria vaccination is delivered in combination with pertussis and tetanus antigens and coverage of this vaccine is often used as a core measure of health system functioning. However, coverage is challenging to estimate due to the difficulty in translating numbers of doses delivered into numbers of children effectively immunised. Serology provides an alternative lens onto immunisation, but is complicated by challenges in discriminating between natural and vacci

Factors impairing cell proliferation in the granulation tissue of pressure ulcers: Impact of bacterial burden.

The authors aimed to assess the factors that impair cell proliferation in the granulation tissue of pressure ulcers using immunohistochemist … icient was -1.34 (95% confidence interval, -2.01 to -0.66, p < 0.001). Among the isolated bacteria, Corynebacterium spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were significantly associated with a low Ki-67 index, but Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not. These results suggest a negative relationship between bacterial count and cell proliferation in pressure ulcer granulation tissu …

Infective endocarditis in New Zealand children 1994-2012.

BACKGROUND: New Zealand is a developed country with high incidence of bacterial infections and postinfectious sequelae including rheumatic h … was the most common organism, accounting for 26 episodes (30.6%). Other notable pathogens included Corynebacterium diphtheriae (10 cases, 11.8%) and Streptococcus pyogenes (7 cases, 8.2%). In 6 episodes, the microbiologic diagnosis was made by 16S ribosomal RNA testing of excised cardiac tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Congenital heart disease was the major risk factor fo …

A simplified method of antibiotic lock therapy for Broviac-Hickman catheters using a CLC 2000 connector device.

INTRODUCTION: We report a simplified method of performing antibiotic lock therapy (ALT) based on a disposable central venous catheter (CVC) hub device, CLC 2000, enabling an open-ended CVC to be flushed with normal saline solution without heparin. METHODS: ALT was administered through a CLC 2000 connector for recurrent CVC-bloodstream infections (BSI) by the same organism in four patients and for CVC colonization in five patients. RESULTS: The antibiotic concentration obtained in the lumen of the CVC with ALT was 2,500-fold higher than the minimum inhibiting concentration of targeted bacteri

Reactogenicity and immunogenicity of adult versus paediatric diphtheria and tetanus booster dose at 6 years of age.

We evaluated the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a booster dose of diphtheria-tetanus vaccine administered at the age of school-entry, comparing a low-dose vaccine (dT) to the standard paediatric dose (DT). Participants were randomly assigned to receive one of the two vaccines; the study was evaluator-blinded. The frequency of side-reactions was similar when comparing the two groups, except when considering local redness and swelling, which were significantly more frequent among the DT group. The post-booster geometric mean titre of diphtheria antibodies in the DT group was twice as high

Animal-associated opportunistic infections among persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

A number of animal-associated infections occur in persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including those due to Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium, Microsporida, Salmonella, Campylo-bacter, Giardia, Rhodococcus equi, Rochalimaea, and Listeria monocytogenes. Most of these infections, with the exception of those due to Rochalimaea, appear to be acquired by the immunosuppressed individual from sources other than exposure to animals. Drs. Glaser and colleagues review our current understanding of the role of exposure to animals, especially pets, in the natural history of thes

Moderating Effects of Oral Bacteria and Tooth Loss on Cognitive Performance.

INTRODUCTION: The oral microbiome may influence brain health and contribute to cognitive decline. However, little evidence exists on the pot … ease-associated bacteria (Treponema, Porphyromonas, and Tannerella) to healthy bacteria (Rothia and Corynebacterium). RESULTS: A multivariable linear regression model showed a significant interaction effect between tooth loss and dysbiotic index on the AFT (b = -1.87, P = 0.03), indicating that participants with a higher dysbiosis index and fewer missing teeth s …

The global burden is estimated at 1.8 billion people, … of samples for non-IDA group when compared with the other groups. IDA group showed higher burden of Corynebacterium, Acinetobacter, Paludibacter and Nitrospira, while exhibiting a trend towards a lower burden of Streptococcus.
