Increased population growth and food prices have resulted in more demand for fertilizers, especially phosphorus (P), to be used in agriculture and production of food crops. This research investigated the feasibility of P recovery from selected wastewaters in the form of precipitates only with pH adjustment. Human urine and effluent of an anaerobic digester treating a piggery's wastewater were employed to determine appropriate pH conditions for P recovery including solubility of the precipitates in an agricultural soil. From the laboratory experiments, the highest P recovery was found to be 106

Aflatoxicosis represents one of the serious diseases of poultry, livestock and other animals. The cause of this disease in poultry and other food-producing animals has been attributed to the ingestion of various feeds contaminated with A. flavus. This toxigenic fungus is known to produce a group of extremely toxic metabolites, of which aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is most potent. Avian species especially chicks, goslings, ducklings and turkey poults are most susceptible to AFB1 toxicity. The toxic effects of AFB1 are mainly localized in liver as manifested by hepatic necrosis, bile duct proliferation,

BACKGROUND: Cobalamin (vitamin B₁₂) is synthesized only by certain bacteria and archaea and is rarely found in plant-derived foods because plants neither synthesize nor require this cofactor. The edible duckweed Wolffia globosa Mankai is unusual in containing bioavailable cobalamin, suggesting a microbial origin. However, how cobalamin biosynthetic capacity is organized within angiosperm-associated microbiomes remains largely unresolved. Here, we investigated bacterial community structure and cobamide biosynthetic potential across the cultivation medium, plant surface, and internal tissues of

Mycotoxins are the most frequently occurring natural contaminant in food and feed products. Through the deployment of diverse agricultural strategies or biological, chemical, or physical treatments of crop products, mycotoxin contamination remains a persistent issue for the agricultural sector and food/feed industry. We previously suggested that halophytes, thanks to their high antioxidant activity, could protect animal cell lines from mycotoxin contamination. Here, a hydroalcoholic extract of Calystegia soldanella L. leaves was evaluated for in vitro total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and 2,2-d

Biofuels and bioenergy production are increasingly being viewed as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources because of their renewable nature and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waste products, lignocellulosic materials, and agricultural residues are some of the feedstocks that can be used to create biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. The production of biofuels not only promotes sustainable energy but also addresses environmental problems. This review article explores the challenges posed by dependence on non-sustainable resources and the environmental

Little is known about the long-distance telecoupling effects of urban food demands on land use changes (LUCs) in remote oases of the Southern Sahara. Using the example of two typical oasis settlements on Mont Bagzam in the southern Aϊr Mountains of Niger which are linked to regional and global markets by an unpaved road since 2015, this study aimed at analyzing time trajectories of LUCs and related changing agricultural production patterns. LUCs were quantified for 1955 to 2022 using GIS-based mapping of agriculture and natural vegetation based on historical aerial photographs, CORONA and mult

Plant diseases caused by fungal pathogens are responsible for major crop losses worldwide, with a significant socio-economic impact on the life of millions of people who depend on agriculture-exclusive economy. This is the case of the Witches' Broom Disease (WBD) affecting cacao plant and fruit in South and Central America. The severity and extent of this disease is prospected to impact the growing global chocolate market in a few decades. WBD is caused by the basidiomycete fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa. The methods used to contain the fungus mainly rely on chemical fungicides, such as copp

This study investigated the phytochemical composition and biological activities of leaves and flowers from seven Nerium oleander L. cultivars grown in Tunisia to evaluate their potential for industrial and crop-related applications. Primary metabolite analysis showed that flowers had a higher accumulation of metabolites than leaves, with the 'Roseum Plenum' (RP) cultivar reaching a peak total soluble sugar concentration of 31.57 µg/ml, dominated by sucrose (19.47 µg/ml). Amino acid profiles were also significantly higher in flowers; glycine peaked at 50.66 µg/ml in 'Villa Romaine' (VRS), while

Late wilt is a disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Magnaporthiopsis maydis that severely limits the production of maize in countries with warm to hot climates. A particular characteristic of this disease is that, although the pathogen penetrates the roots in the first weeks after sowing, the symptoms appear suddenly around flowering. Additionally, even with air temperatures and relative humidity that are optimal for disease development during the crop cycle, adequate soil water content results in undetected disease. Overall, physiological alterations caused by M. maydis in maize are poorly

Plant specialized metabolites connect genetic programs and environmental responses with ecologically and economically valuable natural products. Their accumulation is rarely constitutive, varying instead with tissue identity, developmental stage, stress exposure, hormone signaling, and cellular storage capacity. This review examines basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors as regulatory switch points in plant specialized metabolism, with emphasis on the jasmonate-JAZ-MYC module. In resting tissues, JAZ repressors constrain MYC/bHLH activity; after wounding, herbivory, pathogen chall

Yellow dwarf viruses (YDV), comprising strains of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV), constrain cereal production in the United States by causing yellow dwarf disease (YDD). Five principal B/CYDV strains occur in cereals: BYDV-PAV, -MAV, -RMV, -SGV, and CYDV-RPV. Although YDV has been reported in Nebraska, cultivar-specific responses and field-level strain composition remain poorly characterized. We conducted a two-year (2024-2025), multi-location field study at Mead, Fairbury, and Concord, Nebraska to evaluate 10 widely grown wheat and barley cultivars for Y

Heavy metal contamination in river basins poses a global challenge to vegetation health, crop productivity, and long-term ecological security. However, existing ecological risk assessment methods typically assume uniform vegetation exposure, overlooking how contamination sources and hydrological pathways differentiate vegetation vulnerability across varying soil depths. To address this gap, a novel depth-specific vegetation ecological risk assessment framework was developed using a source-pathway-receptor approach. An integrated environmental risk assessment was first performed for the 2023 pr

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is Bangladesh's staple crop, cultivated across three distinct seasons: Rabi (Boro), Kharif-1 (Aus) and Kharif-2 (Aman). This study develops an integrated, cloud-independent framework for mapping Aus and Aman rice areas using freely available Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery; to accomplish this, supervised machine-learning (ML) algorithms are used in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Time-series dual-polarization (VV and VH) backscatter data were analyzed for June-November 2021 (Aman) and March-August 2022 (Aus). Four ML models such as Classi

Biostimulants such as humic acid (HA), salicylic acid (SA), and ascorbic acid (ASA) have gained increasing attention for enhancing crop resilience and productivity. However, their effectiveness is strongly influenced by environmental and nutritional contexts. A field experiment was conducted in two contrasting climates of Iran-semi-humid (Khorramabad) and arid (Mashhad)-to evaluate the combined effects of nitrogen sources and foliar biostimulants on physiological, biochemical, and yield traits of cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.). The experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a paramount global staple crop; however, its production is severely limited by diverse abiotic stresses, particularly drought and saline-alkali stress. Although glutaredoxins (GRXs) are known to regulate plant growth and stress responses, their specific functions and underlying molecular mechanisms in maize under drought and saline-alkali conditions remain largely elusive. In this study, we cloned the maize GRX family member ZmGRXCC13 (Zm00001d037757) and characterized its biological functions in abiotic stress tolerance. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses rev

Over 3.7 million tons of pesticides are applied each year in agriculture to maintain crop production. However, mixing, loading, and spraying expose agricultural workers to pesticide residues. Beyond occupational exposure, take-home pathways, where residues on gloves, clothing, and tools are transported into vehicles and homes, pose additional risks to families, especially vulnerable children. Pesticide exposure has been linked to nausea, respiratory distress, neurological impairment, and endocrine disruption, underscoring the need for effective monitoring in both occupational and domestic sett…

Iron (Fe) availability is a critical constraint in soilless and hydroponic crop production, where continuous aeration and near-neutral pH promote Fe2 + oxidation and precipitation, limiting root uptake and inducing interveinal chlorosis. Although synthetic chelates partially mitigate Fe deficiency, their cost and pH-dependent degradation highlight the need for biological alternatives. In this study, we identified siderophore producing bacteria (SPB) that mobilize mineral Fe and mitigate Fe stress in French marigold (Tagetes patula 'Durango Yellow'). We screened 1044 greenhouse rhizobacterial i…

Dahlia is an economically important ornamental crop in the United States and worldwide. Dahlia is primarily propagated vegetatively through bulbs, which can result in vertical transmission of and constant accumulation of viruses. In this study, mosaic and yellowing symptoms were observed in Dahlia plants in a residential garden in California. Dahlia samples were collected and sequenced using high-throughput sequencing (HTS). HTS analysis was used to explore the Dahlia virome in the symptomatic plants, which revealed the presence of several contigs with homology to known Dahlia-infecting viruse
