Monoclonal antibodies (MABs) were produced after fusion of spleen cells of Fasciola antigen immunized BALB/c mice and non secreting murine myloma cells (P3x63 Ag8). Six MAbs, showing the highest reactivity with purified Fasciola antigen, were prepared. All 6 MABs were IgG2 with Kappa light chain. We report a fatal case of disseminated amebiasis in a young African woman, which initially presented with an ulcerated cutaneous lesion on the left flank. The causative organism was confirmed by examination of a wet drop preparation from the ulcer discharge and by skin biopsy. The patient was not immunosuppressed and was treated unsuccessfully with metronidazole. Postmortem examination revealed the presence of intestinal amebiasis complicated by a liver abscess.

We report here a simple and economical slide agglutination test, the co-agglutination (Co-A) test, for the detection of circulating amebic antigen in sera for the diagnosis of amebic liver abscess. Fifty serum specimens from cases of amebic liver abscess, 25 from other individuals with parasitic and miscellaneous infections, and 25 from healthy controls were tested for the presence of serum antigen by the Co-A test. Studies on cell-mediated immune response (CMIR) to amebia antigen in amebic liver abscess showed conflicting results. The leucocyte migration test was employed in nine cases of amebic liver abscess and CMIR to amebic antigen was demonstrated in four cases.
