Although most adults are considered experts in face recognition, brain trauma can produce a selective loss in this ability, a condition referred to as prosopagnosia. This study examined the processing strategies of prosopagnosic patients LR and HH using the Face Dimensions Test. In this test, featural and configural information in the upper and lower halves of the face was parametrically varied and sensitivity to these changes measured. We found that relative to age-matched control participants, LR and HH exhibited an impaired ability to discriminate differences in the eye region, but a preser

BACKGROUND: Prehospital stroke triage is challenged by endovascular treatment for large vessel occlusion (LVO) being available only in major stroke centers. Conjugate eye deviation (CED) is closely related to LVO, whereas common stroke signs (face-arm-leg-speech-visual) screen stroke. We hypothesized that combining CED with common stroke signs would yield a prehospital stroke scale for identifying both LVO and stroke in general.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients (n = 856) with prehospital Code Stroke (recanalization candidate). The National Institutes of He

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) activation associated with interictal epileptiform discharges in a patient with fixation-off sensitivity (FOS) was studied using a combined electroencephalography-functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) technique. An automatic approach for combined EEG-fMRI analysis and a subject-specific hemodynamic response function was used to improve general linear model analysis of the fMRI data. The EEG showed the typical features of FOS, with continuous epileptiform discharges during elimination of central vision by eye opening and closing and fixation;

Functional magnetic-resonance imaging was used to identify areas involved in naming objects and to examine which of these areas adapted to either physical or semantics features of objects. We presented successive pairs of objects that were either the same exemplar of an object, different exemplars of that object, or different objects. By controlling for differences in physical features between pairs of different exemplars and different objects, visual areas in the occipital-temporal cortex were subject to repetition suppression when the same exemplars of an object were repeated, but not when d

Gaze direction is known to be an important factor in regulating social interaction. Recent evidence suggests that direct and averted gaze can signal the sender's motivational tendencies of approach and avoidance, respectively. We aimed at determining whether seeing another person's direct vs. averted gaze has an influence on the observer's neural approach-avoidance responses. We also examined whether it would make a difference if the participants were looking at the face of a real person or a picture. Measurements of hemispheric asymmetry in the frontal electroencephalographic activity indicat

PURPOSE: Clinical features of acquired third, fourth, and sixth cranial nerve palsy showed variation among previous studies. Evaluation of natural course with objective criteria will establish accurate recovery rates and important factors for recovery.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed on 206 patients who visited a neuro-ophthalmic department with acquired third, fourth, and sixth nerve palsy. Aetiology and results of ocular exam on each visit were reviewed, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent factors affecting recovery.

This study presents the neuro-otological findings of 523 patients attending a tertiary vestibular clinic with migraine- and nonmigraine-related dizziness. Subjects were categorized into one of 4 groups, definite migrainous vertigo, probable migrainous vertigo, vestibular disorder coexisting with migraine and nonmigraine-related dizziness. No notable relationship was found between the numbers of abnormal findings between the groups for the majority of the neuro-otological tests. However, there was a significant trend in emetic response to caloric testing. The definite migrainous vertigo group w

Heart contraction is characterized by the absence of changes in energetic intermediates in response to a large increase of activity. Until now no experimental approach could address this question concerning the intact beating heart. Ca(2+) plays a crucial role in the excitation-contraction coupling, and in vitro studies have evidenced that Ca(2+) may also directly activate mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. We applied our new in situ modular control and regulation analysis on isolated beating rat heart perfused under two different calcium concentrations with pyruvate or glucose as the su

In patients with central visual field scotomata a large part of visual cortex is not adequately stimulated. We investigated evidence for possible upregulation in cortical responses in 22 patients (8 females, 14 males; mean age 41.5 years, range 12-65 years) with central visual field loss due to hereditary retinal dystrophies (Stargardt's disease, other forms of hereditary macular dystrophies and cone-rod dystrophy) and compared their results to those of 22 age-matched controls (11 females, 11 males; mean age, 42.4 years, range, 13-70 years). BACKGROUND: Corneal transplantation requires exquisite microsurgical precision, particularly during the suturing of donor and recipient tissues. In corneal transplantation procedures such as penetrating keratoplasty, the donor cornea is traditionally secured using ultrafine 10-0 nylon sutures, meticulously placed under an operating microscope to achieve precise tension and promote optimal wound healing. Although this technique remains the reference standard, it is inherently time-intensive and requires advanced microsurgical expertise. To enhance surgical efficiency and maintain clinical outco

RATIONALE: Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) occurs after the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV) present within the sensory spinal or cerebral ganglia and sometimes causes ocular inflammatory diseases, including neovascular glaucoma (NVG), which is one of the most devastating sequelae of virus-associated uveitis. In NVG, the synechial angle ultimately closes due to the contraction of proliferating myofibroblasts, which often requires glaucoma filtration surgery, including Ahmed glaucoma drainage device implantation, to maintain optimum intraocular pressure (IOP). Although tube

Diplopia (double vision) in strabismus is prevented by suppression of the image emanating from one eye. In a recent study conducted in two macaques raised with exotropia (an outward ocular deviation) but having normal acuity in each eye, simultaneous display of stimuli to each eye did not induce suppression in V1 neurons. Puzzled by this negative result, we have modified our protocol to display stimuli in a staggered sequence, rather than simultaneously. Additional recordings were made in the same two macaques, following two paradigms. In trial type 1, the receptive field in one eye was stimul

Behavioral research indicates that healthy aging is accompanied by maintenance of voluntary attentional function in many situations, suggesting older adults are able to use attention to enhance and suppress neural activity. However, other experiments show increased distractibility with age, suggesting a failure of attention. One hypothesis for these apparently conflicting findings is that older adults experience a greater sensory processing load at baseline compared to younger adults. In this situation, older adults might successfully modulate sensory cortical activity relative to a baseline r

Four patients with Balint's syndrome secondary to bilateral parieto-occipital ischemic lesions are presented. The pathogenesis of these lesions corresponded to either occlusive arterial disease in the vertebro-basilar system or the effects of systemic hypotension. The clinical features of this syndrome are discussed, along with the pathophysiology and time course of the condition, with particular emphasis on etiological factors, which make of this condition a distinct clinico-pathological syndrome.
