Autoimmune pancreatitis has been established as a special entity of pancreatitis. It is an enigmatic disease since it is adding an autoimmune etiology to the existing causes of pancreatitis. Morphological hallmarks of the disease are narrowing of the pancreatic duct system and the bile duct by periductal lymphoplasmocytic inflammation. OBJECTIVE: To make an early and correct diagnosis of hepatic echinococcosis.
METHODS: A total of 1092 patients with hepatic echinococcosis underwent operation in our hospital between 1984 and 1995. Of these patients, 427 (39.1%) were cases with complications, including secondary infection, rupture, obstructive jaundice, anaphylactic shock, disseminated implantation with resultant multiple echinococcosis and portal hypertension. The ultrasonic examination has been generally used in clinical practice for comprehensive evaluation which can dectedct the preoperative diagnostic accuracy rate.

BACKGROUND: Whether intraoperative laparoscopic cholangiography should be routine is debatable.
METHODS: We reviewed the cholangiography experience in 669 consecutive laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
RESULTS: Mean age of the patients was 39 years, 78% were female, and 29% had acute cholecystitis. Cholecystectomy was completed laparoscopically in 606 (91%). Laparoscopic cholangiography was completed in 562 (93%) and 348 (62%) were routine (no preoperative indication). The mean operating time in 1996 was 61 minutes. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for the nonoperative treatment of acute pancreatic pseudocyst has been of hypothetical benefit. We reviewed pseudocyst hospital admissions in 40 patients treated with TPN who had serial imaging studies. The mean cyst size was 7.4 cm on presentation, decreasing to 5.6 cm after nonoperative treatment with TPN (mean 32.5 days).
