PURPOSE: Chronic radiation proctitis, a well described complication of pelvic radiation therapy, can result in severe bleeding that is refractory to conventional treatment. Argon plasma coagulation is an effective treatment for hemorrhagic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of argon plasma coagulation in the management of severe radiation proctitis resistant to medical treatment.

DESIGN: Retrospective, noncomparative case series.
INTERVENTION: Photocoagulation of the peripheral avascular retina with a diode laser indirect ophthalmoscope.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The principal outcome evaluated was best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The most recent refractions for these eyes were also collected for analysis.

PURPOSE: Management of a case of glaucoma secondary to an iris metastasis is reported.
RESULTS: A 31-year-old woman developed glaucoma secondary to a metastatic tumor to the iris. Anti-glaucoma medication failed to control the increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). However, diode laser cyclophotocoagulation controlled the IOP.
CONCLUSION: Glaucoma secondary to an iris metastasis is difficult to manage. Diode laser cyclophotocoagulation is effective in controlling the increase in IOP without affecting visual acuity.

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization allows visual improvement, especially in young patients.
METHODS: Three eyes of 3 patients were prospectively studied. Subfoveal choroidal neovascularization was related to presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome. The surgical procedure included vitrectomy, surgical excision of the neovascular membrane, and air tamponnade.
RESULTS: Follow-up was 6, 12 and 20 months. Vision improved in 2 eyes. In one case, recurrent extrafoveal neovascularization was treated with laser photocoagulation.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Following laser panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, patients are at risk of failing the UK driving visual field test due to loss of peripheral field. Progression of nonischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) to ischemic CRVO occurs in up to 5-20% of patients with nonischemic CRVO. The watermelon stomach is a vascular malformation at the gastric antrum which is responsible for chronic bleeding. In some emergency situations of colo-rectal pathology, especially those characterized by hemorrhaging, the endoscopy has acquired, with the passing of years, a fundamental role both from the diagnostic and the therapeutic point of view. In no more than 25% of the lower intestinal tract hemorrhages, the clinical picture does have the signs of an emergency. The diverticula, IBD and angiodysplasias are primarily responsible for rendering these characteristics. METHODS: HELP is a variant of extracorporeal dialysis which reduces low-density lipoprotein and fibrinogen levels.

Over a 7-year period 158 nonsurgical patients with an advanced esophageal cancer were treated by palliation. The initial success rate was 79% and the complications rate was 2.3%. Average improvement duration was 136 days. Tumors were mostly situated in lower and middle part of oesophagus.

Nd:YAG laser irradiation and flexible cystoscopy were used in the outpatient management of 16 cases (21 sessions) with superficial bladder tumors. Irradiation of tumors was accomplished in all cases except 3 in which the visual field was affected by bleeding after the cup biopsy of tumors. Tumors at the bladder neck were easily irradiated through the flexible cystoscope. No tumor recurred at or near the previously irradiated site. This method provided a safe and cost-effective means to treat superficial bladder tumors in selected cases.

We have performed ab-externo photoablative filtration surgery on 19 patients affected by uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma. All cases had wide open angles, were previously treated with argon laser trabeculoplasty and were considered good candidates for trabeculectomy.
