Louse-borne relapsing fever in Finland in two asylum seekers from Somalia.

We report two cases of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in young Somali asylum seekers having recently arrived to Finland. They had sought medical attention for a febrile illness. Blood smears were examined for suspected malaria, but instead, spirochete shaped bacteria were observed. The bacteria were confirmed as Borrelia recurrentis by PCR and sequencing. The patients survived, but their treatment was complicated by Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. We conclude that LBRF must be considered as a diagnostic option in febrile refugees also in the northernmost parts of Europe.

A review of the louse genus Tinamotaecola (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae sensu lato), with description of a new species.

We studied a collection of lice from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile containing all four known species and one new species (described herein) in the genus Tinamotaecola, parasites of birds of the families Cariamidae and Tinamidae. We also (1) describe previously unknown second and third nymphal instars of two Tinamotaecola species, (2) discuss hosts and geographical ranges for all Tinamotaecola species, and (3) speculate on possible macroevolutionary events that may explain the current distribution of these lice on their respective avian hosts.

Hats off to success: changing head lice policy.

Pediculosis at school is an emotional and contentious issue. Many school nurses do not feel prepared to take on the task of changing long-standing school policy, even in the light of solid evidence to do so. This article explores one school nurse's experience in changing lice policy for her district.

[The frequency of intestinal parasites and head lice among students of the Akşemsettin Primary School for Deaf Students].

Parasitic infections especially affect those children in critical phases of growing and development. They can lead to malnutrition, malabsorption, mental and social adaptation problems, and critical illnesses that hinder productivity. This is an important health problem in Turkey, and intestinal parasites are quite frequently found in boarding school and care centers for children. The aim of this study was to discover and treat the parasitological agents found in the students of the Primary School for Deaf Students. A total of 117 fecal specimens and material from the perianal region (using th

Distribution pattern of phthirapterans infesting certain common Indian birds.

The prevalence and frequency distribution patterns of 10 phthirapteran species infesting house sparrows, Indian parakeets, common mynas, and white breasted kingfishers were recorded in the district of Rampur, India, during 2004-05. The sample mean abundances, mean intensities, range of infestations, variance to mean ratios, values of the exponent of the negative binomial distribution, and the indices of discrepancy were also computed. Frequency distribution patterns of all phthirapteran species were skewed, but the observed frequencies did not correspond to the negative binomial distribution.

[Clinical and epidemiological study of pediculosis capitis in schoolchildren from Coro, Venezuela].

Between March-July 2003, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate clinical and epidemiological data on Pediculus capitis infestation among 327 (175 males and 152 females) primary school age children of an urban sector of Coro city, from the semiarid region of Falcon state, north-western Venezuela. Children were evaluated ectoparasitologically by visual inspections of heads. Overall prevalence was 28.8% (94/327). Pediculosis capitis infestation rates were significantly higher in girls (84.0 vs. 15. 9%) [Odds Ratio (OR) = 11.4; p = 0.0001] and schoolchildren with hair length > 3 cm

Ecomorphology of parasite attachment: experiments with feather lice.

The host specificity of some parasites can be reinforced by morphological specialization for attachment to mobile hosts. For example, ectoparasites with adaptations for attaching to hosts of a particular size might not be able to remain attached to larger or smaller hosts. This hypothesis is suggested by the positive correlation documented between the body sizes of many parasites and their hosts. We adopted an ecomorphological approach to test the attachment hypothesis. We tested the ability of host-specific feather lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) to attach to 6 novel species of pigeons and do

Experimentally infected human body lice (pediculus humanus humanus) as vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia conorii in a rabbit model.

The human body louse, the natural vector of Rickettsia prowazekii, is able to experimentally transmit the normally flea-borne rickettsia R. typhi, suggesting that the relationships between the body louse and rickettsiae are not specific. We used our experimental infection model to test the ability of body lice to transmit two prevalent tick-borne rickettsiae. Each of two rabbits was made bacteremic by injecting intravenously 2 x 10(6) plaque-forming units of either R. rickettsii or R. conorii. Four hundred body lice were infected by feeding on the bacteremic rabbit and were compared with 400 u

Incidence and prevalence of head lice in a district health authority area.

There are very few recent studies of the incidence and prevalence of head lice in the UK. A population-based questionnaire survey was carried out in a district health authority area. Two hundred and four of 235 primary schools (87%) agreed to participate. A total of 21,556 of 43,889 (49%) questionnaires were returned by parents. Overall 438 children had head lice at the time of the survey, giving a prevalence of 2.03%; 8,059 had had lice at some time in the last year giving an annual incidence of 37.4%.

Eradication of lice in cattle.

The purpose of this field study was to develop and evaluate eradication as a strategy to control lice in cattle. Thirty-three herds of cattle were selected and observed during a period of two and a half years. Before eradication, biting lice (Damalinia bovis) were present in 94% of the herds and 27% of the animals. Sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) were present in 42% of the herds and 5% of the animals. These levels were very similar to those reported from other countries in Northern Europe. The eradication strategy was successful in 28 of 33 herds, but lice were still present in 5 herds 3 to

Common groin eruptions: diagnosis and treatment.

Most common groin lesions are caused by fungi, bacteria, psychogenic factors, viruses, parasites, or tumors. The workup of all patients with an inguinal skin disorder should include a history, physical examination, microscopic examination and culture of scrapings from the eruption, and examination of the eruption by Wood's light. Agents useful in treating groin lesions include topical and systemic corticosteroids and antibiotics, antipruritic agents, Burow's solution, and lindane. Prolonged use of high-potency topical corticosteroids can be deleterious.

Field and laboratory studies on the use of malathion for control of body-lice in Egypt.

In view of the development of resistance to DDT by Egyptian strains of body-lice, there is a need for another effective and safe insecticide with which they may be controlled. Trials were made in three governorates of the United Arab Republic to compare the effectiveness against these insects of 1% malathion and 10% DDT dusts, 30 g of powder being applied inside the clothing while it was being worn. When susceptibility tests were carried out with the WHO standard technique, the LC(50) was found to be less than 0.04% malathion. In the field, 1% malathion could effectively control lice for three

The abundance and distribution of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae) on pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon in coastal British Columbia.

In total, 23,750 specimens of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, were collected from 3,907 juvenile pink and 3,941 chum salmon caught within the Broughton Archipelago during a 2-yr survey. The prevalence on pink salmon was significantly higher than on chum salmon in 2004 (62.3% and 58.6%, respectively) and in 2005 (26.4% and 23.1%, respectively). The mean abundance on chum salmon was significantly higher than on pink salmon in 2004 (7.0 +/- 0.3 and 2.8 +/- 0.2, respectively), whereas in 2005 the mean abundance did not differ between species (0.6 +/- 0.1 and 0.5 +/- 0.0, respectively).

Epidemiology and morbidity of scabies and pediculosis capitis in resource-poor communities in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis and scabies are common parasitic skin diseases, especially in resource-poor communities, but data on epidemiology and morbidity are scanty. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence, seasonal variation and morbidity of pediculosis capitis and scabies in poor neighbourhoods in north-east Brazil. METHODS: The study comprised cross-sectional surveys of a representative population of an urban slum (n = 1460) in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará State (Brazil) and a fishing community 60 km south of the city (n = 605). Study participants were examined for the presence of s
