To assess the differences in the pathogenesis of cardiac ischemic events and the role of the autonomic nervous system, we studied the electrocardiographic measures of tonic vagal activity during 24-hour Holter monitoring. We tested the circadian rhythm of the power in the high frequency energy (HF: 0.15-0.40 Hz) of the normal R-R interval power spectrum, the daily percent of successive normal R-R greater than 50 ms (pNN50) and the roots mean square of successive difference of normal R-R intervals (MMSD) in patients with coronary artery disease of comparable angiographic severity. Profound bradycardia is a common complication in the early posttraumatic period following cervical spinal cord damage. It is thought to be due to temporary inactivity of the sympathetic nervous system after separation from supraspinal control, coupled with unopposed parasympathetic dominance because of vagus nerve sparing. Hypoxia, underventilation, and tracheal suctioning appear to intensify the bradycardia. This study examined the effect of vagal stimulation using facial immersion and apnea on heart rate in patients with quadriplegia. Ten patients with quadriplegia (eight males and two femal

Pure acute Pandysautonomia (PAP), first described in 1969 by Young, is a rare but well defined clinical entity, in which the isolate involvement of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) gives rise to a characteristic clinical admixture of symptoms and signs all due to the alteration of parasympathetic and sympathetic control of neurovegetative functions. The most prominent clinical features are: 1) postural hypotension without changes in heart rate leading to orthostatic syncopal or near-syncopal episodes, 2) abnormalities of intestinal tract and urinary bladder motility, leading to constipation alte

The two stress-responsive physiological systems, autonomic nervous system (ANS) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis exert complementary and interrelated actions in the organism. Individuals that suffer stress-related psychopathologies frequently present simultaneous alterations -i.e., either low or high- responsiveness- in both systems. However, there is scarce evidence establishing whether a priori alterations in these systems -i.e., independent of previous stress exposure- may predispose to the development of psychopathologies possibly due to the lack of animal models simultaneousl

Inflammatory cytokines produced by muscularis macrophages largely contribute to the pathological signs of postoperative ileus (POI). Electroacupuncture (EA) can suppress inflammation, mainly or partly via activation of vagal efferent. The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanisms by which EA stimulation at an hindlimb region ameliorates inflammation in POI. Methods: Intestinal motility and inflammation were examined after 24 h after intestinal manipulation (IM)-induced POI in mice. Local immune response in the intestinal muscularis, expression of macrophages, α7 nicotinic acetylchol

We examined the relationship between hemodynamics in the three major salivary glands and salivary secretion in urethane-anesthetized and sympathectomized type 2 diabetic and nondiabetic rats via laser speckle imaging and by collecting the saliva. Lingual nerve stimulation elicited rapid increases in glandular blood flow and induced salivary secretion from the three glands in both diabetic and nondiabetic rats. In the parotid gland, the magnitude of blood flow increase and salivary secretion was significantly lower in the diabetic rats when compared with the nondiabetic rats; however, this was

Bisphenol A, a substance commonly used in plastic manufacturing, is relatively well known as an endocrine disruptor, which may bind to estrogen receptors and has multidirectional negative effects on both human and animal organisms. Previous studies have reported that BPA may act on the reproductive organs, but knowledge concerning BPA-induced changes within the nerves located in the uterine wall is extremely scant. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of various doses of BPA on the parasympathetic nerves located in the corpus and horns of the uterus using a single and double imm

OBJECTIVE: To review and discuss the literature relevant to the role of brainstem structure and function in headache.
BACKGROUND: Primary headache disorders, such as migraine and cluster headache, are considered disorders of the brain. As well as head-related pain, these headache disorders are also associated with other neurological symptoms, such as those related to sensory, homeostatic, autonomic, cognitive and affective processing that can all occur before, during or even after headache has ceased. Many imaging studies demonstrate activation in brainstem areas that appear specifically asso

We herein report the case of a 39-year-old man with recurrent asthma exacerbations preceded by abdominal cramps with the urge to defecate. The patient had a history of near-fatal asthma associated with these gastrointestinal symptoms starting five years before his admission. He stated that, even when his daily asthma symptoms were under control, he suffered from attacks, especially when he had a strong urge to defecate. Although the contribution of increased parasympathetic tone to the onset of bronchospasms was likely, anticholinergics were not effective. Instead, the patient's symptoms succe

Clinical and experimental evidence indicates that intestinal inflammatory conditions can be exacerbated by behavioral conditions such as depression. The recent demonstration of a tonic counterinflammatory influence mediated by the vagus nerve in experimental colitis provides a potential link between behavior and gut inflammation. Here we show that experimental conditions that induced depressive-like behaviors in mice increased susceptibility to intestinal inflammation by interfering with the tonic vagal inhibition of proinflammatory macrophages and that tricyclic antidepressants restored vagal

After cardiac denervation, a small-amplitude respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) has been described in animals and humans. Its mechanical and chemical determinants were investigated in 19 urethan-anesthetized, vagotomized, and mechanically ventilated rabbits. We measured the influence on RSA of arterial blood gases, beta-adrenergic blockade, and phasic and steady changes in right atrial pressure (RAP) induced by changes in tidal volume (VT, 20, 40, 60 ml), respiratory frequency (RF, 10, 20, 30 cycles/min), and dextran-induced RAP increases. Phasic changes in RAP during each recording were quant

1. The aim of the present study was to investigate the type of adrenoceptor which modulates constriction of the guinea-pig isolated main bronchus in response to electrical field stimulation (EFS). Drugs used were salbutamol and two agonists reportedly selective for the putative beta 3-adrenoceptor: BRL 37344 and SR 58611A. 2. At basal tone, all three drugs induced relaxation, however, SR 58611A and BRL 37344 (10(-9) to 10(-6) M) relaxed guinea-pig isolated main bronchus more weakly than salbutamol (10(-9) to 10(-6) M). The effects observed at 10(-6) M were 43% +/- 9%, 63% +/- 4% and 98% +/- 1%

Previously we have shown that four regions of the cerebellum, the uvula-nodulus, flocculus, ventral paraflocculus, and anterior lobe 1, receive extensive, but not exclusive, cholinergic mossy fiber projections. In the present experiment we have studied the origin of three of these projections in the rat and rabbit (uvula-nodulus, flocculus, ventral paraflocculus), using choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry in combination with a double label, retrogradely transported horseradish peroxidase (HRP). We have demonstrated that in both the rat and rabbit the caudal medial vestibular

1. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms involved in the reorganization of sympathetic efferent pathways to the urinary bladder of the cat following chronic unilateral, parasympathetic preganglionic denervation of the bladder. 2. Electrical stimulation (10-30 Hz) of the hypogastric nerve in cats with an intact bladder innervation or on the normally innervated side of the bladder in unilaterally denervated preparations elicited low-amplitude (10-25 cmH2O) transient (10-30 s) bladder contractions and non-synaptic axonal volleys on bladder postganglionic nerves. However, after chr

Horeradish peroxidase was injected at multiple sites in the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands in order to label the preganglionic salivatory neurons in the brain stem. The same injections resulted in retrograde labeling of the sympathetic and sensory neurons that project to these glands. Labeled fusiform and multipolar salivatory neurons were found ipsilaterally in the lateral reticular formation of the medulla where they extended over the rostral four-fifths of the facial nucleus and the caudal one-third of the dorsal nucleus of the trapezoid body. The vast majority of the small and m

Background Heart rate variability (HRV) represents beat-to-beat fluctuations in heart rate arising from the dynamic balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity. Altered HRV reflects autonomic dysregulation and has been reported across several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, where it may contribute to cardiovascular risk and cognitive dysfunction. Aim The aim of this study was to compare the time-domain and frequency-domain heart rate variability parameters between patients with schizophrenia and their first-degree relatives and to analyze the correla…
