A Distributed Network for Multimodal Experiential Representation of Concepts.

Neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and psychophysical evidence indicate that concept retrieval selectively engages specific sensory and motor brain systems involved in the acquisition of the retrieved concept. However, it remains unclear which supramodal cortical regions contribute to this process and what kind of information they represent. Here, we used representational similarity analysis of two large fMRI datasets with a searchlight approach to generate a detailed map of human brain regions where the semantic similarity structure across individual lexical concepts can be reliably detected.

Pain reduction by inducing sensory-motor adaptation in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS PRISMA): protocol for a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) presents as chronic, continuous pain and sensory, autonomic, and motor abnormalities affecting one or more extremities. People with CRPS can also show changes in their perception of and attention to the affected body part and sensory information in the affected side of space. Prism Adaptation (PA) is a behavioural intervention targeted at reducing attention deficits in post-stroke hemispatial neglect. PA also appears to reduce pain and other CRPS symptoms; however, these therapeutic effects have been demonstrated only in small unblinded studies

Optical and Visual Quality With Physical and Visually Simulated Presbyopic Multifocal Contact Lenses.

PURPOSE: As multifocal contact lenses (MCLs) expand as a solution for presbyopia correction, a better understanding of their optical and visual performance becomes essential. Also, providing subjects with the experience of multifocal vision before contact lens fitting becomes critical, both to systematically test different multifocal designs and to optimize selection in the clinic. In this study, we evaluated the ability of a simultaneous vision visual simulator (SimVis) to represent MCLs. METHODS: Through focus (TF) optical and visual quality with a center-near aspheric MCL (low, medium and

[The KAMRA™ inlay : A realistic approach?].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The KAMRA™ inlay (AcuFocus, Irvine, California, USA) is an additional option for correcting presbyopia that has been used for many years in refractive surgery. Our objective is to report our three-month postoperative results of KAMRA™ inlay implantation in terms of near, intermediate and distance vision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All 24 patients (average age 54.1 ± 6.0 years) were treated with the KAMRA™ inlay in the non-dominant eye (75 % in the left eye) by the same surgeon (MEH). The KAMRA™ inlay was implanted under a 200 µm-thick femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK flap i

Auditory and Cognitive Factors Associated with Speech-in-Noise Complaints following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Auditory complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) are common, but few studies have addressed the role of auditory temporal processing in speech recognition complaints. PURPOSE: In this study, deficits understanding speech in a background of speech noise following MTBI were evaluated with the goal of comparing the relative contributions of auditory and nonauditory factors. RESEARCH DESIGN: A matched-groups design was used in which a group of listeners with a history of MTBI were compared to a group matched in age and pure-tone thresholds, as well as a control group

Reading performance in patients with retinitis pigmentosa: a study using the MNREAD charts.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between reading performance and severity of disease in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), assessed with routine clinical psychophysical visual tests. METHODS: Seventy-six consecutive patients with RP (145 eyes), with reading acuity of at least 1.6 logMAR (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) in at least one eye, were examined. Each patient underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation, including visual acuity (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study [ETDRS] charts), contrast sensitivity (Pelli-Robson charts), visual field perimetry (Humphre

Visual processing of motion-defined form: selective failure in patients with parietotemporal lesions.

The following psychophysical data were obtained from 13 patients with unilateral cerebral hemispheric lesions and 20 control subjects: speed thresholds for detecting and for recognizing motion-defined letters, speed thresholds for detecting coherent motion and for discriminating its direction, and visual acuity for recognizing letters of 96% and 11% contrast. Acuity was between 6/6 and 6/3 for all patients. Four patients showed a selective loss of ability to recognize motion-defined letters, while the ability to detect those same letters was spared, as was the ability to detect coherent motion

[Significance and prognosis of positive surgical section margins in surgery of laryngeal cancer].

During the surgical treatment of head and neck cancers the surgeon may have to face the problem of deciding what measures to adopt when the tissue at the margin of the surgical sections proves histologically to be cancerous. Many factors may influence the decision for supplementary therapy; among these, of primary importance are stage and site of the tumor, the effectiveness of non surgical therapy, and the psychophysical status of the patient. In order to better consider this problem a retrospective study, limited to laryngeal surgery, and a review of the literature have been carried out. Rev

Occupational risk factors for brain tumors. A case-referent death-certificate analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) have reduced knee joint proprioceptive acuity compared to peers. Altered proprioception at end of range in individuals with JHS is hypothesised to contribute to recurrent joint injuries and instability. This study aims to provide the first objective comparison of functional knee joint proprioceptive acuity in hyperextension range compared to early flexion range in children with JHS. METHODS: Active, weight-bearing knee joint proprioceptive acuity in both hyperextension and early flexion range was tested with a purpose-built device.

Challenges to normal neural functioning provide insights into separability of motion processing mechanisms.

There is a long history of attempts to disentangle different visual processing mechanisms for physically different motion cues. However, underlying neural correlates and separability of networks are still under debate. We aimed to refine the current understanding by studying differential vulnerabilities when normal neural functioning is challenged. We investigated effects of ageing and extrastriate brain lesions on detection thresholds for motion defined by either luminance- or contrast modulations, known as first- and second-order motion. Both approaches focus on extrastriate processing chang

Just like new: newly segregated old objects capture attention.

Subjects searched for target letters that were either contained in or segregated from a group of distracting letters and were either moving or stationary. Subjects were faster to identify targets that had recently become segregated from the group regardless of whether the segregation was accomplished by (1) the element itself moving away from the group or (2) the group moving away from the segregated element. The results show that attention can be captured by newly apparent objects that are produced by a new grouping of an existing scene.

Asymmetric interference between sex and emotion in face perception.

Previous research with speeded-response interference tasks modeled on the Garner paradigm has demonstrated that task-irrelevant variations in either emotional expression or facial speech do not interfere with identity judgments, but irrelevant variations in identity do interfere with expression and facial speech judgments. Sex, like identity, is a relatively invariant aspect of faces. Drawing on a recent model of face processing according to which invariant and changeable aspects of faces are represented in separate neurological systems, we predicted asymmetric interference between sex and emo

Effect of visual surrounding motion on body sway in a three-dimensional environment.

Unidirectional motion of a uniplanar background induces a codirectional postural sway. It has been shown recently that fixation of a stationary foreground object induces a sway response in the opposite direction (Bronstein & Buckwell, 1997) when the background moves transiently. The present study investigated factors determining this contradirectional postural response. In the experiments presented, center of foot pressure and head displacements were recorded from normal subjects. The subjects faced a visual background of 2 x 3 m, at a distance of 1.5 m, which could be moved parallel to the in

Visual search for a socially defined feature: what causes the search asymmetry favoring cross-race faces?

Levin (1996, 2000) reported that white subjects search for black targets more quickly than they search for white targets, suggesting that black faces are perceived as having a feature that is lacking in white faces. Here we test one of the implications of this asymmetry by having subjects search for same-race (SR) and cross-race (CR) faces that are distorted to look less like each other (producing caricatures that enhance race-specifying features), or are distorted to look more like each other (a prototypical distortion expected to reduce the salience of race-specifying features). Experiments

On the use of metacontrast to assess magnocellular function in dyslexic readers.

It has been proposed that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in the magnocellular system. Reduced metacontrast masking in dyslexic readers has been taken as support for this view. In metacontrast, a masking stimulus reduces the visibility of a spatially adjacent target stimulus when the target stimulus precedes the masking stimulus by about 30-100 msec. Recent evidence indicates that the latency difference between the magnocellular and parvocellular subcortical pathways is at most 20 msec and may be as small as only 5 msec, or even less. This makes it difficult to attribute the latency in met

Dissociation of covert and overt spatial attention during prehension movements: selective interference effects.

In four experiments, the influence of distractor objects on the temporal evolution of the reach-to-grasp movement toward a target object (an apple) was examined. In the first experiment, the distractor was another apple, which moved laterally behind the target and occasionally changed direction toward the target, thus becoming the to-be-grasped object. In the second and third experiments, the distractor was a stationary piece of fruit, which sometimes became the to-be-grasped object because of a change in illumination. The fourth experiment was a combination of the first two experiments. In al

Testing the direct-access model: GOD does not prime DOG.

In three repetition priming experiments that employed identical (e.g., DOG-DOG) and reversed repetitions (e.g., GOD-DOG), it was found that relative to controls (e.g., DOG-DOG), GOD-type words did not prime DOG-type words. Also, neither DUT-type nor TUD-type nonwords primed DUT-type nonwords. In Experiments 1 and 2, these results occurred using both long- and short-term repetition priming conditions, respectively. In Experiment 3, the word results held under conditions of short-term priming coupled with stimulus misorientation. However, the nonword results resembled the word results (i.e., ide

Temporal inhibition in character identification.

Models of information processing tasks such as character identification often do not consider the nature of the initial sensory representation from which task-relevant information is extracted. An important component of this representation is temporal inhibition, in which the response to a stimulus may inhibit, or in some cases facilitate, processing of subsequent stimuli. Three experiments demonstrate the existence of temporal inhibitory processes in information processing tasks such as character identification and digit recall. An existing information processing model is extended to account

Binaural additivity of loudness in children and adults.

Thirty-six different binaural noises were formed by crossing six right-ear intensities of a broadband noise with the same six intensities in the left ear in a 6 X 6 factorial design. Children (6-7 years of age) and adults were presented with 2 of these 36 binaural noises on a trial and asked to indicate which noise was louder. In Experiment 1, the left- and right-ear noises were in phase and differed only in intensity. In Experiment 2, the left- and right-ear noises were in opposite phase. For both the children and adults in Experiments 1 and 2, the paired comparison judgments of binaural loud

Measuring and predicting the effects of alcohol consumption on contrast sensitivity for stationary and moving gratings.

Contrast sensitivity was measured for 12 healthy young males while sober, after ingestion of an alcohol placebo, and after ingestion of alcohol (95% grain alcohol; mean estimated blood alcohol level = .088%). Observations were made for both stationary gratings and gratings that traveled through a circular path and required pursuit eye movements. The significant alcohol-related reduction in contrast sensitivity was 2.6 times greater for moving (.29-log-unit reduction) than for stationary gratings (.11-log-unit reduction). The loss in contrast sensitivity for the moving gratings of high spatial
