Metastatic lung adenocarcinoma causes extensive destruction of the hip and pelvis.

BackgroundLung cancer is the most prevalent tumor and frequently present with distant metastases, with the bone being one of the most common affected sites. However, bone metastases leading to complete resorption of the hip joint and pelvis are extremely rare. This case aimed to report an extensive destruction of the hip and pelvis in metastatic lung adenocarcinoma, and conduct a literature review to explore the factors influencing the diagnosis and treatment decisions of bone metastasis.Case presentationA 56-year-old woman presented with progressive pain in her left hip joint and pelvis accom

Operative simulation of anterior clinoidectomy using a rapid prototyping model molded by a three-dimensional printer.

BACKGROUND: As the anatomical three-dimensional (3D) positional relationship around the anterior clinoid process (ACP) is complex, experience of many surgeries is necessary to understand anterior clinoidectomy (AC). We prepared a 3D synthetic image from computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and a rapid prototyping (RP) model from the imaging data using a 3D printer. The objective of this study was to evaluate anatomical reproduction of the 3D synthetic image and intraosseous region after AC in the RP model. In addition, the usefulness of the RP model

Recurrent Mandibular Ewing sarcoma in an 11-year-old boy: a rare pediatric case and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Mandibular Ewing sarcoma is exceptionally rare in children and frequently mimics common odontogenic infections. This overlap leads to delayed diagnosis and potentially rapid tumor progression. Early recognition and appropriate multimodal management are critical for improving outcomes. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 11.5-year-old Iranian boy of Middle Eastern ethnicity presented with progressive left mandibular swelling and pain for 1 month, unresponsive to antibiotic therapy previously prescribed for presumed dental abscess. DIAGNOSIS: Imaging (CT, MRI) revealed an aggressive destructive ma

Pituitary metastasis: a clinical overview.

The pituitary gland is an unusual site for metastatic spread and has been associated with a poor prognosis. Clinical presentation is variable but can include visual field defects, cranial nerve palsies, anterior pituitary dysfunction and/ or diabetes insipidus. Management options include surgery or radiotherapy, chemotherapy/immunotherapy or a conservative approach. The pituitary should not be overlooked as a site for metastasis in patients with known cancer and can be the first presentation of neoplastic disease in some patients. Given that patients are now living longer with cancer, clinicia

Rare Diseases of the Orbit.

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a

A rare case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the frontal sinus and rapid review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Primary lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses, especially involving the frontal sinus, is exceedingly rare. Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) located in the head and neck frequently poses diagnostic challenges because its nonspecific symptoms can be mistaken for benign issues such as rhinosinusitis. AIM: This case report seeks to emphasize the challenges in diagnosis, the aggressive characteristics, and the effective treatment of an uncommon manifestation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) primarily affecting the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. CASE PRESENTATION: We present

Malignant Melanoma Bone Metastasis With Unknown Primary Site: A Case Report and Literature Review.

IntroductionCases of malignant melanoma first identified in bone are relatively uncommon. Approximately 4.3% of the patients will have metastasis, among which 23% will have metastasis to the bone.Case presentationThis article presents a case involving malignant melanoma with a metastatic lesion located at the distal femur, which was the initial symptom observed. The patient was a 21-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital due to intermittent pain in his lower left thigh. Aggressive Central Nervous System Relapse after Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in Multiple Myeloma: Case Reports and Literature Review.

Extramedullary disease is an aggressive presentation at diagnosis and relapse for multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Central nervous system (CNS) is a very rare manifestation of the extramedullary disease, accounting for less than 1% of MM on diagnosis and relapse. Neurological symptoms are unspecific and usually attributed to other causes. We present two patients with CNS-MM at relapse after autologous stem cell transplant highlighting the importance of clinical suspicion and interdisciplinarity at diagnostic workup as well as the need for intensive therapeutic options on such rare and aggressiv

Anterior petrosal approach for petroclival solitary plasmacytoma.

BACKGROUND: Primary solitary plasmacytoma (PSP) of the skull base is a rare localized monoclonal plasma cell dyscrasia with normal or low plasma cell infiltration. Differentiating from other skull base tumors based on radiologic findings is difficult due to nonspecific features. PSP has a better prognosis after surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy, unless the tumor progresses to multiple myeloma (MM). Nonetheless, 50-60% progress to MM within a median time of 2 years. Gross total resection (GTR) for PSP is controversial for improving overall survival. However, if the lesion is easily a

Olfactory Neuroblastoma-A Challenging Fine Line between Metastasis and Hematology.

Developing in a limited space, rare tumors located at the nose and paranasal sinuses are sometimes difficult to diagnose due to their modest clinical presentation, which is uncorrelated with anatomopathological diversity. This limits the preoperative diagnosis without added immune histochemical study; for that reason, we present our experience with these tumors with the intention of raising awareness. The patient included in our study was investigated by our department through clinical and endoscopic examination, imaging investigations, and an anatomic-pathological study. The selected patient

Multiple myeloma with presentation in the oral cavity.

Plasma cell neoplasms may present in the bone as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, solitary plasmacytoma of bone, multifocal plasma cell neoplasm of bones known as multiple myeloma (MM) and in soft tissues as extramedullary plasmacytoma. MM is a malignant disease of atypical plasma cells characterized by their multifocal proliferation and production of monoclonal immunoglobulins. Often, the initial clinical feature of this disease is subtle and requires trained primary health-care providers to identify this illness and put together a suitable treatment plan. This case report

Severe Hypocalcemia in a Patient with Recurrent Chondrosarcoma.

Hypocalcemia is relatively uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome. Only one case of hypocalcemia has been reported in a patient with chondrosarcoma. We herein report a case of a 32-year-old woman with metastatic chondrosarcoma with tetany. Her imaging findings revealed multiple calcific metastatic lesions in the lungs, pancreas, left atrium, and pulmonary vein. A laboratory examination showed hypocalcemia with no evidence of any other disease that could induce hypocalcemia. On the basis of the laboratory and clinical findings, we concluded the etiology of her severe hypocalcemia to be excessive calc

Mucormycosis during Imatinib treatment: case report.

UnlabelledPhiladelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia is classified as a very high-risk group and it requires an intensive chemotherapy regimen associated with tyrosine-kinase inhibitors and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant from related or unrelated HLA matched donor. Most times, intensive chemotherapy regimens are associated with prolonged and profound pancytopenia when the risk of invasive fungal infection increases. After Candida and Aspergillus species, Mucormycosis is the third frequent fungal infection in hematology patients and it is associated with a redu

Extramedullary disease in multiple myeloma.

When clonal plasma cells grow at anatomic sites distant from the bone marrow or grows contiguous from osseous lesions that break through the cortical bone, it is referred to as extramedullary multiple myeloma (EMD). EMD remains challenging from a therapeutic and biological perspective. The pathogenetic mechanisms are not completely understood and it is generally associated with high-risk cytogenetics which portends poor outcomes. There is a rising incidence of EMD in the era of novel agents, likely a reflection of longer OS, with no standard treatment approach. Patients benefit from aggressive

A Comprehensive Review of the Role of the Latest Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Techniques and Outcomes for Brain and Spinal Surgeries.

Minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques offer reduced surgical trauma, lower complication rates, and faster recovery compared to traditional open procedures. Approaches such as keyhole craniotomy, endoscopic skull base surgery, endovascular neurosurgery, and percutaneous spinal techniques have advanced the management of cranial and spinal pathologies. These methods aim to minimize tissue disruption, blood loss, and hospital stay while maintaining surgical efficacy. This narrative review explores their evolution, applications, and advantages in modern neurosurgery.

Localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis: A case report.

Amyloidosis is a rare condition on its own but finding localized amyloidosis of a site such as the nasopharynx is an extremely rare condition with very few cases described in the literature. The condition occurs due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the extracellular space disrupting the cell architecture and causing eventual dysfunction. In this case report we discuss the pathophysiology, symptoms, and imaging findings of a patient initially thought to have giant cell arteritis, but who was found on CT to have a mass later determined to be localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis. Watchful waiting in children with unifocal osseous Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

BackgroundLangerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare inflammatory neoplasm most commonly involving bone. However, data on single-system, single-site LCH (SS-s-LCH), particularly with unifocal bone disease, remain limited. Management strategies for unifocal osseous LCH vary globally, and the safety of a watchful-waiting approach is not well-defined. This study aimed to evaluate whether patients with osseous SS-s-LCH can be managed with observation alone without compromising long-term outcomes.MethodsIn this retrospective, multicenter study, we enrolled children with biopsy-proven osseous SS-

Recurrent NF1 gene variants and their genotype/phenotype correlations in patients with Neurofibromatosis type I.

Neurofibromatosis type I, a genetic condition due to pathogenic variants in the NF1 gene, is burdened by a high rate of complications, including neoplasms, which increase morbidity and mortality for the disease. We retrospectively re-evaluated the NF1 gene variants found in the period 2000-2019 and we studied for genotype/phenotype correlations of disease complications and neoplasms 34 variants, which were shared by at least two unrelated families (range 2-11) for a total 141 of probands and 21 relatives affected by Neurofibromatosis type I. Recurrent variants could be ascribed to the most com
