[Cholestatic hepatitis ascribed to the use of thiabendazole].

Two women, aged 27 and 42 years, both born in Surinam and both suffering from heterozygous thalassemia, developed cholestatic hepatitis three and two weeks respectively after the start of a two-day course of thiabendazol for Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Other causes of cholestasis were unlikely in view of the results of blood tests, echography and the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography. The symptoms persisted for several months, and the liver function disorders for 7 years and one year, respectively. The incidence of thiabendazole-induced cholestatic hepatitis is unknown,

Strongyloides stercoralis: maintenance of exceedingly chronic infections.

Two hypotheses were tested to identify the mechanism(s) by which chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infections are maintained in experimental dogs as a model to explain delayed onset recrudescence in humans. Investigations tested the hypotheses that chronic infections result from 1) periodic reactivation of third-stage larvae from a reservoir of dormant parasites outside the gastrointestinal tract or 2) the periodic rejuvenation of postreproductive female worms remaining from a previous infection, lodged in the mucosal crypts. Populations of parenteral larvae survived in mature experimentally i

Immunity to a challenge infection of Strongyloides stercoralis third-stage larvae in the jird.

Jirds support the entire life-cycle of Strongyloides stercoralis. We therefore used this host as a model to define the mechanism of the immune response to a challenge infection, as well as the parasite stage effected by the response. Jirds given a primary infection of S. stercoralis are resistant to re-infection. The use of implanted diffusion chambers containing larvae showed that the immune response killed the third-stage larvae, and this was confirmed by subcutaneous infections. The larvae of a challenge infection are killed within 48 h, a time period too short to allow for the development

Strongyloides stercoralis infestation masquerading as steroid resistant asthma.

A 42 year old man presented with steroid resistant asthma of 6 months duration. Serial chest radiographs showed migrating interstitial shadowing. Electrocardiographs showed decreasing R-wave progression in the precordial leads, and endomyocardial biopsy showed eosinophil infiltration with fibrosis. Bronchoscopy revealed inflammatory changes and lavage showed filariform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis in the washings. This confirms the diagnosis of parasitic infection with eosinophilic cardiomyopathy.

[Role of prolactin in changes of parasitism induced by lactation].

In order to establish the role played by prolactin in lactation during the evolution of Strongyloides ratti in the female rat, the authors tried to reproduce the effects of this physiological state by treatment with sulpiride (substituted benzamide), of which the prolactinogenic effect is intense in the female rat. Low doses partially reproduced the effects of lactation on parasitism by diminishing its intensity and delaying the onset of rejection, although without preventing it. The pharmacological action of sulpiride, which acts by blocking the dopamine receptors, explains why only low doses

Cytologic detection of Enterobius vermicularis and Strongyloides stercoralis in routine cervicovaginal smears and urocytograms.

Four cases of Enterobius vermicularis infection and one case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection were found during the examination of 22,700 routine Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears and 434 urinary sediments. Ova of E. vermicularis were observed in the urocytograms from three girls and in the vaginal smear of a young woman. In a second woman, a S. stercoralis larva was detected in the routine vaginal smear. A clear background or a mild inflammatory pattern was noted in the smears in these cases.

The efficacy of ivermectin against Strongyloides westeri in foals.

Seven foals naturally infected with Strongyloides westeri were injected intramuscularly with ivermectin at a dosage rate of 200 mcg per kg body weight. No adverse effects to treatment were observed. Weekly faecal egg counts showed a greater than 99 per cent reduction of S. westeri egg output compared with 7 untreated foals during the 21 days following treatment.

Control of Filaroides hirthi in commercially reared beagle dogs.

Two commercial research Beagle breeding colonies began a control program for Filaroides hirthi. All stud dogs and all nonpregnant, nonlactating brood bitches were given two courses, 2-4 weeks apart, of 25 mg/kg body weight albendazole per os twice daily for 5 days. Puppies of treated dams were isolated from puppies of nontreated dams. The proportions of infected puppies of puppies killed in 1979 were 45% and 78% from the two colonies. After 1979, the proportions were 0.2% and 24%. One colony may have had a problem with albendazole toxicity; the problem was stopped by changing the diet.

Strongyloides stercoralis infection and small intestinal lymphoma.

A West Indian man who was infected with Strongyloides stercoralis developed small intestinal obstruction. Treatment with thiabendazole did not relieve the obstruction which was found at laparotomy to be due to a poorly differentiated small intestinal lymphoma. There was no blood eosinophilia or accumulation of eosinopohils in the sites of infection. There was no reaction in the skin to delayed hypersensitivity antigens and the blood T lymphocyte count and serum C3 levels were low. From these findings and a review of the literature it was concluded that the immune response in man to Strongyloid

Stronglyoides ransomi: factors influencing the in vitro development of the free-living generation.

Among the progeny of parasitic females of Strongyloides ransomi, ransomi, males did not appear in significant numbers until the 7th week of infection in cases of simple infection, and until the 3rd week of infection in cases of multiple infection. The appearance of males was attributed to the effect of host immunity, the physiological ageing of the parasitic females, or both. Type of culture substrate and other cultural conditions did not influence the percent of larvae developing into males. Sex of larvae was determined prior to hatching, probably during oogenesis or embryogenesis. Culture co

Intestinal absorption of palmitate and 2-aminoisobutyric acid in piglets infected with Strongyloides ransomi.

Piglets were infected with 5000 or 15,000 third stage larvae of Strongyloides ransomi/kg of body weight. On the 15th day post infection absorption of the amino acid 14C alpha-amino-isobutyric acid (AIB) and the fatty acid 3H palmitic acid were studied. It was found that the onset of absorption of amino and fatty acids was delayed in the infected animals. Defective absorption of the amino acid was found in heavily infected piglets, whereas in moderate infection there was no failure of absorption from the entire small intestine. There was no difference in the rates of absorption of 3H-palmitic a
