[Prevertebral abscess and endotracheal intubation in patients with infectious spondylitis of cervical vertebrae].

The course of hypostatic abscess in cervical spondylitis is analyzed, and its clinico-roentgenological manifestations are presented. The differential diagnosis between prevertebral abscess and thyroid tumors is described. The modes of application of endotracheal undulation in patients with cervical spondilitis and prevertebral abscess are suggested.

Tuberculosis of the spine in children at Muhimbili Medical Centre, Dar es Salaam.

A retrospective study of 22 children with tuberculosis of the spine who were managed at Paediatric Surgical Unit (PSU) of Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC), Dar es Salaam between 1988 and 1993 was done. There were 12 boys and 10 girls of ages ranging from 3-13 years. Majority of the patients presented with back pain and/or deformity and weakness in the legs associated with difficulty in walking. The diagnosis was based on radiological as well as haematological findings. Two patients had associated lung lesions and these gave AFB positive sputum. Majority (63.5%) were thoracolumbar T11-L2. All pat

Disseminated blastomycosis masquerading as tuberculosis.

Two patients were mistakenly treated for several months for tuberculosis. Both had lung and vertebral involvement and one patient had superficial skin lesions as well. Blastomycosis was eventually confirmed by fungal culture, but only after both patients had deteriorated markedly; one died soon after treatment with amphotericin B was started. In Africa, blastomycosis is a relatively rare condition which can mimic tuberculosis; it is one of several infections which should be borne in mind when dealing with apparently non-responsive tuberculosis.

[Tuberculous radiculomyelitis--good response to therapy only in early detection].

This is a report of a case of radioculomyelitis secondary to tuberculous meningitis. The importance of an early diagnosis is stressed in the light of reports on good outcome after prompt commencement of therapy. Polymerase chain reaction is now available for quick confirmation of the suspected diagnosis.

Analysis of clinical characteristics of different types of lung function impaiement in TDL patients.

AIM: The clinical characteristics associated with pulmonary function decline in patients with Tuberculosis-destroyed lung (TDL) remain uncertain. We categorize them based on the pattern of pulmonary function impairment, distinguishing between restrictive spirometric pattern (RSP) and obstructive spirometric pattern (OSP). We aim to compare the severity of these patterns with the clinical characteristics of TDL patients and analyze their correlation. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective analysis on the clinical data of TDL patients who underwent consecutive pulmonary function tests (PFT) from

Vertebral body defects treated with umbilical-cord mesenchymal stem cells combined with hydroxyapatite scaffolds: The first case report.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral body defects (VBDs) are one of the most frequent orthopaedic disorders. Such defects often require bone grafts or fusion procedures; however, both procedures often fail due to various factors. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used as a potential therapy to fill bone voids in bone defects, and they may be a potential treatment for VBDs. We reported VBDs treated with MSCs combined with hydroxyapatite scaffolds. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 27-year-old female presented with recurrent back pain. She had a history of decompression and stabilization procedure one year ago

Vertebral column decancellation in Pott's deformity: use of Surgimap Spine for preoperative surgical planning, retrospective review of 18 patients.

BACKGROUND: In the late stage of Spinal tuberculosis, the bony destruction and vertebral collapse often leads to significant kyphosis, presenting clinically as a painful gibbus deformity, with increased instability, vertebral body translations and increased risk of neurologic involvement. Vertebral column decancellation is thought to be suitable for most patients with severe rigid kyphosis. Surgimap Spine, could offer a pragmatic graphical method for the surgical planning of osteotomies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Vertebral column decancellation planned preoperativel
