Comparisons among vestibular examinations and symptoms of vertigo in sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients.

OBJECTIVES: Vertigo in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is hypothesized as an extension of the disease caused by the anatomical proximity of the cochlea and vestibule. The present study aimed to demonstrate the association of vestibular function test (VFT) results with SSNHL disease severity and prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study assessed clinical records of 263 SSNHL patients admitted to our hospital, between January 2010 and October 2017. Steroid treatment comprised high-dose intravenous dexamethasone (16 mg/d) or oral methylprednisolone (64 mg/d) for 4 days and tapered o

Multimodal stimuli modulate rapid visual responses during reaching.

The reticulospinal tract plays an important role in primate upper limb function, but methods for assessing its activity are limited. One promising approach is to measure rapid visual responses (RVRs) in arm muscle activity during a visually cued reaching task; these may arise from a tecto-reticulospinal pathway. We investigated whether changes in reticulospinal excitability can be assessed noninvasively using RVRs, by pairing the visual stimuli of the reaching task with electrical stimulation of the median nerve, galvanic vestibular stimulation, or loud sounds, all of which are known to activa

Residual vestibular function after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess vestibular function in 39 patients who underwent neurectomy for vestibular schwannoma. METHOD: Semicircular canal reactivity was measured by video head-impulse test using high-frequency passive head acceleration. Response gain was calculated as a ratio between the areas under the eye-velocity curve and the head-velocity curve. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Student t-test was used for to compare quantitative variables. ANOVA was used to test inter-group differences in categoric variables. RESULTS: In all cases, surgery-side gain on head impulse test was low, wi

Hearing Loss After Vestibular Implantation in Sand Rats With Normal Hearing.

IMPORTANCE: Bilateral vestibular failure is a debilitating condition that may lead to oscillopia and adversely affect quality of life. Researchers have suggested that vestibular function might be restored with implantation of an external mechanical stimulation device. However, it is essential that such a device must not interfere with normal hearing. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of vestibular implant insertion on hearing in a sand rat model with normal hearing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: The study was conducted in a tertiary medical center in accord with the guidelines of the Rabin

Personality traits modulate subcortical and cortical vestibular and anxiety responses to sound-evoked otolithic receptor stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Strong links between anxiety, space-motion perception, and vestibular symptoms have been recognized for decades. These connections may extend to anxiety-related personality traits. Psychophysical studies showed that high trait anxiety affected postural control and visual scanning strategies under stress. Neuroticism and introversion were identified as risk factors for chronic subjective dizziness (CSD), a common psychosomatic syndrome. This study examined possible relationships between personality traits and activity in brain vestibular networks for the first time using functional m

Central projections of lagenar primary neurons in the chick.

Perception of linear acceleration and head position is the function of the utricle and saccule in mammals. Nonmammalian vertebrates possess a third otolith endorgan, the macula lagena. Different functions have been ascribed to the lagena in arboreal birds, including hearing, equilibrium, homing behavior, and magnetoreception. However, no conclusive evidence on the function of the lagena in birds is currently available. The present study is aimed at providing a neuroanatomical substrate for the function of the lagena in the chicken as an example of terrestrial birds. The afferents from the lage

Vestibular signals in macaque extrastriate visual cortex are functionally appropriate for heading perception.

Visual and vestibular signals converge onto the dorsal medial superior temporal area (MSTd) of the macaque extrastriate visual cortex, which is thought to be involved in multisensory heading perception for spatial navigation. Peripheral otolith information, however, is ambiguous and cannot distinguish linear accelerations experienced during self-motion from those resulting from changes in spatial orientation relative to gravity. Here we show that, unlike peripheral vestibular sensors but similar to lobules 9 and 10 of the cerebellar vermis (nodulus and uvula), MSTd neurons respond selectively

Interactions of carotid sinus or aortic input with emetic signals from gastric afferents and vestibular system.

This study investigated how baro- and chemoreceptor afferents interact with emetic signals from gastric afferents and the vestibular system, and how these interactions modulate emetic and prodromal responses. We performed splanchnic denervation and abdominal vagotomy in anesthetized shrews (Suncus murinus), and then induced emetic responses by gastric distension. Next, we investigated the effects of these gastric afferent sections on cardiovascular and emetic responses induced by electrical stimulation of the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) and the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) with or without gastri

Vestibular orientation for craniofacial surgery: application to the management of unicoronal synostosis.

BACKGROUND: Standardized cephalometric measurements are necessary to compare skulls of different ages and sizes, in normal and diseased subjects, and in different species. In diseases involving the skull base, classical cephalometry is often impossible because the cranial landmarks are modified. In vestibular orientation (VO), the plane of the lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) of the inner ear, which has a constant relation to gravity, defines the horizontal plane of reference. Defining a reference plane independent of external landmarks is especially important in unicoronal craniosynostosis (

Dlx5 and Dlx6 homeobox genes are required for specification of the mammalian vestibular apparatus.

The mammalian inner ear is a complex organ that develops from a surface ectoderm into distinct auditory and vestibular components. Congenital malformation of these two components resulting from single or multiple gene defects is a common clinical occurrence and is observed in patients with split hand/split foot malformation, a malformation which is phenocopied by Dlx5/6 null mice. Analysis of mice lacking Dlx5 and Dlx6 homeobox genes identified their restricted and combined expression in the otic epithelium as a crucial regulator of vestibular cell fates. Otic induction initiates without incid

Sound-evoked neurogenic responses with short latency of vestibular origin.

OBJECTIVE: In ABR recording, a large negative deflection with a latency of 3 ms (N3) has been recorded in patients with peripheral profound deafness. It has been suggested that N3 might be of vestibular origin. So far, N3 has been recorded only in patients with peripheral profound deafness. If we can record N3 potentials in subjects with preserved hearing, recording N3 potentials might be a new clinical test of the vestibular system. To record neurogenic potentials (N3) of vestibular origin in healthy volunteers and patients with vestibular disorders. METHODS: Twelve healthy volunteers (10 me

Sudden deafness with vertigo as a sole manifestation of anterior inferior cerebellar artery infarction.

Sudden deafness without associated neurological symptoms and signs is typically attributed to a viral inflammation of the labyrinth. Although sudden deafness occurs with anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) infarction, the deafness is usually associated with other brainstem or cerebellum signs such as crossed sensory loss, lateral gaze palsy, facial palsy, Horner syndrome or cerebellar dysmetria. An 84-year-old woman suddenly developed right-sided tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo and vomiting. Audiometry and electronystagmography documented absent auditory and vestibular function on the r
