Bioinspired Microcavities Enhancing the Interface of Fe-Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer.

Laser micro-drilling was applied to Fe substrates to enhance the interfacial properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer/iron laminates. This architecture is referred to as a resin-interlocked Fe-CFRP hybrid composite. Inspired by human hair follicles' exceptional adhesion and filling efficiency, novel biomimetic frustum-integrated cylindrical cavities were engineered for Fe surface modification. Experimental results demonstrate that laser-processed surfaces with varied hole geometries (conical, conical frustum, cylindrical, and frustum-integrated cylindrical cavities) exhibit significantly

Identify the co-expressed genes of hypertensive nephropathy and diabetic nephropathy.

This study focused on the intricate connections between hypertension nephropathy (HN) and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in terms of molecular and pathological mechanisms. The samples were from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. GSE37460 and GSE142153 are training sets, and GSE37455 and GSE30529 are validation sets. We found 42 shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by means of the differential analysis. The GO/KEGG and GSEA analysis mainly highlights the signal transduction pathways related to the proteasome and cytokines. The eight hub genes identified through the Protein-Protein I

Efficient activation of peracetic acid by Fe-doped g-C3N4 for selective degradation of emerging contaminants: Unraveling the role of reactive complex.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are increasing favored for water treatment due to their environmentally benignity and ease of activation. However, the development of low-cost and high-performance activators is still a primary challenge. In this study, Fe-doped g-C3N4 (Fe-N-C) was fabricated as an efficient peracetic acid (PAA) activator for sustainable degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) like bisphenol A (BPA) with a removal efficiency of 97.8 %. Quite different from the reported non-radical involved catalytic studies, Fe-N-C-PAA complex (Fe(III)-OO(O)CCH

Influence of perinatal exposure to an endocrine disruptor mixture on the renal microenvironment of aged male rat offspring: histopathological aspects.

The developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis suggests that environmental exposures during critical developmental windows increase the risk of disease later in life. Among these, endocrine disruptors (EDs) are particularly concerning due to their ubiquitous presence. The kidneys are highly susceptible to EDs toxicity during the perinatal period; however, long-term effects of ED mixtures on renal structure in aging remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize the renal histoarchitecture of aged rats after perinatal exposure to an ED mixture. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were as

Chemical mixture that targets the epidermal growth factor pathway impairs human trophoblast cell functions.

Pregnant women are exposed to complex chemical mixtures, many of which reach the placenta. Some of these chemicals interfere with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation, a receptor tyrosine kinase that modulates several placenta cell functions. We hypothesized that a mixture of chemicals (Chem-Mix) known to reduce EGFR activation (polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-126, PCB-153, atrazine, trans-nonachlor, niclosamide, and bisphenol S) would interfere with EGFR-mediated trophoblast cell functions. To test this, we determined the chemicals' EGFR binding ability, EGFR and downstream effec

The adverse role of endocrine disrupting chemicals in the reproductive system.

Reproductive system diseases pose prominent threats to human physical and mental well-being. Besides being influenced by genetic material regulation and changes in lifestyle, the occurrence of these diseases is closely connected to exposure to harmful substances in the environment. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), characterized by hormone-like effects, have a wide range of influences on the reproductive system. EDCs are ubiquitous in the natural environment and are present in a wide range of industrial and everyday products. Currently, thousands of chemicals have been reported to exhibit

Preparation and Properties of Epoxy Adhesives with Fast Curing at Room Temperature and Low-Temperature Resistance.

Developing a highly efficient multifunctional epoxy adhesive is still an enormous challenge, which can rapidly cure at room temperature and has excellent low-temperature resistance performance and is crucial for the epoxy adhesive and electrical sealing fields during severe cold seasons. Herein, diglycidyl phthalate (DP) was synthesized with phthalic anhydride (PA) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) to enhance the curing rate and low-temperature resistance of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) adhesive. The modified DP/DGEBA adhesives were systematically analyzed by gel time, mechanical properties, a

Early-Life Exposure to 4-Hydroxy-4'-Isopropoxydiphenylsulfone Induces Behavioral Deficits Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Mice.

Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) during gestation and lactation is considered to be a potential risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in both humans and animals. As a novel alternative to BPA, 4-hydroxy-4'-isopropoxydiphenylsulfone (BPSIP) is frequently detected in breast milk and placental barrier systems, suggesting potential transmission from the mother to offspring and increased risk of exposure. Gestation and lactation are critical periods for central nervous system development, which are vulnerable to certain environmental pollutants. Herein, we investigated the behavioral impacts

Prediction of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as potential substrates of various human CYP enzymes and laboratory test of BDE-99 for its metabolism-activated mutagenicity.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are persistent organic pollutants, of which BDE-47 could be activated by human cytochrome P450s (CYPs) for chromosome-damaging effects. However, the metabolic activation and mutagenicity of other PBDEs remain unknown. In this study, 14 representative PBDEs were analyzed by molecular docking as potential substrates for several human CYPs. The results showed negative free energies for each pair of binding, however, different CYPs demonstrated largely varied frequencies of binding conformations favoring a substrate potential: CYP2E1, 3A4, and 2B6 being suita

CTD tetramers: a new online tool that computationally links curated chemicals, genes, phenotypes, and diseases to inform molecular mechanisms for environmental health.

The molecular mechanisms connecting environmental exposures to adverse endpoints are often unknown, reflecting knowledge gaps. At the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD), we developed a bioinformatics approach that integrates manually curated, literature-based interactions from CTD to generate a "CGPD-tetramer": a 4-unit block of information organized as a step-wise molecular mechanism linking an initiating Chemical, an interacting Gene, a Phenotype, and a Disease outcome. Here, we describe a novel, user-friendly tool called CTD Tetramers that generates these evidence-based CGPD-tetramer

Fluid dynamic design for mitigating undesired cell effects and its application to testis cell response testing to endocrine disruptors.

Microfluidic devices have emerged as powerful tools for cell-based experiments, offering a controlled microenvironment that mimic the conditions within the body. Numerous cell experiment studies have successfully utilized microfluidic channels to achieve various new scientific discoveries. However, it has been often overlooked that undesired and unnoticed propagation of cellular molecules in such bio-microfluidic channel systems can have a negative impact on the experimental results. Thus, more careful designing is required to minimize such unwanted issues through deeper understanding and care

Testing sulforaphane as a strategy against toxic chemicals of public health concern by toxicogenomic data analysis: Friend or foe at the gene level - Colorectal carcinoma case study.

Toxic metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As)) and plastificators (bis (2 - ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP)) and bisphenol A (BPA)) have been suggested to aid in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) advancement. Sulforaphane (SFN), isothiocyanate from cruciferous vegetables, diminishes chemical carcinogenesis susceptibility, but has been shown to act as a friend or a foe depending on various factors. By conducting the mechanistic toxicogenomic data mining approach, this research aimed to determine if SFN can alleviate toxic-metal and/or phthalate/BPA mixture-

Unveiling the presence of endocrine disrupting chemicals in northern French soils: Land cover variability and implications.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals that can be found in the environment and have adverse effects on human health by mimicking, perturbing and blocking the function of hormones. They are commonly studied in water surfaces, rarely in soils, although it can be an important source of their presence in the environment. Their detection in soils is analytically challenging to quantify, hence the lack of known background concentrations found in the literature. This scientific research aimed to detect EDCs in soils by analyzing 240 soil samples using an optimized protocol of double ext

Suspect and non-targeted screening-based human biomonitoring identified 74 biomarkers of exposure in urine of Slovenian children.

Human exposure to organic contaminants is widespread. Many of these contaminants show adverse health effects on human population. Human biomonitoring (HBM) follows the levels and the distribution of biomarkers of exposure (BoE), but it is usually done in a targeted manner. Suspect and non-targeted screening (SS/NTS) tend to find BoE in an agnostic way, without preselection of compounds, and include finding evidence of exposure to predicted, unpredicted known and unknown chemicals. This study describes the application of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)-based SS/NTS workflow for reveali
