The effects of socioecological factors on variation of communicable diseases: A multiple-disease study at the national scale of Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of socioecological factors on multiple communicable diseases across Vietnam. METHODS: We used the Moran's I tests to evaluate spatial clusters of diseases and applied multilevel negative binomial regression models using the Bayesian framework to analyse the association between socioecological factors and the diseases queried by oral, airborne, vector-borne, and animal transmission diseases. RESULTS AND SIGNIFICANCE: The study found that oral-transmission diseases were spatially distributed across the country; whereas, the airborne-transmission diseases were

Identification of Suitable Areas for West Nile Virus Circulation in Tunisia.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-transmitted Flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of the Flaviviridae family. It is transmitted primarily by the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly Culex spp. and Aedes/Ochlerotatus spp., which acquire the virus by feeding on viraemic birds. Humans, horses and other mammals are regarded as incidental or dead-end hosts. In the last decades, an increasing number of cases of WNV infection in horses and humans have been notified in the Mediterranean basin. In Tunisia, human cases of WNV-related meningoencephalitis were detect

Acute Environmental Triggers and Intermediate-Term Modulators of Emergency Migraine-Related Health Care Encounters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Migraine activity is shaped not only by the biological vulnerability but also by environmental factors that may influence susceptibility and contribute to fluctuations in migraine occurrence, although the evidence remains inconsistent. We aimed to evaluate the intermediate-term and short-term effects of environmental exposures on migraine activity and to examine a conceptual layered model comprising biological vulnerability, intermediate-term environmental modulators, and acute triggers. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-crossover study among patients wi

The pathogenicity and virulence of Sindbis virus.

Sindbis virus (SINV), a widely distributed alphavirus, is both a foundational model for viral replication studies and an underrecognized human pathogen. Despite its typically mild presentation, SINV can lead to prolonged joint pain and, in rare cases, neurological complications. This review explores SINV's molecular biology and clinical manifestations, particularly its role in causing Sindbis Fever - a self-limiting but potentially chronic arthritic disease. Molecular insights reveal mechanisms of immune evasion, neurovirulence, and persistent infection, highlighting SINV's potential for broad

Sea-level contribution from Thwaites Glacier doubles in an observation-constrained ice-sheet model.

Thwaites Glacier is a major contributor to Antarctic mass loss and a key source of uncertainty in future sea-level rise. Ocean-driven melting at its grounding line drives rapid retreat, yet most models treat the transition between grounded and floating ice as a sharp boundary, neglecting kilometer-scale seawater intrusions that develop as the grounding line migrates and forms a grounding zone. Here, we show that actively-melting grounding zones are required to reproduce nearly three decades of observed retreat, thinning, and acceleration of Thwaites Glacier in a calibrated ice-sheet model, wit

Soil proteogenomics uncover microbial strategies for soil depth-specific carbon cycling under whole-soil warming conditions.

Soils are Earth's largest carbon reservoir, yet microbial mechanisms controlling decomposition, and their warming response, remain poorly resolved, especially in subsoils. Using genome-resolved proteogenomics within a replicated whole-soil warming experiment (0-90 cm, +4 °C, 7.5 years) we map microbial traits, their depth stratification, and warming responses. Depth is the dominant driver of microbial community and trait structure. Depth-wise, metabolism converge on low-molecular-weight and C1 compounds, challenging glucose-centric models, with surface soils enriched in methanol oxidation and

Targeting emerging respiratory pathogens with clamp peptides: Broad-spectrum inhibition of viral entry in 3D human lung models.

Rapid urbanization, migration, and climate change are accelerating the appearance and diversification of respiratory viruses, overwhelming the pace at which conventional drugs can be discovered and manufactured. Here, we report a fast-response platform based on 15- to 25-residue "clamp peptides" (CPs) that grip conserved receptor-binding domains of viral surface proteins. Developed through rational structure-based docking and supported by retrospective machine learning triage, CPs bind their targets and potently block viral entry across SARS-CoV-2 variants and influenza A strains in human tiss

Increased maximum carbon release offsets half of the growth trend in annual land carbon sink.

The terrestrial carbon sink has strengthened in recent decades through enhanced maximum CO2 uptake (MCU) and a longer carbon uptake period (CUP), whereas maximum CO2 release (MCR) remains less quantified. Using atmospheric inversion estimates and 16 terrestrial biosphere models, we show that MCU and MCR both increased significantly from 1993 to 2022, with MCU rising faster globally (0.18 ± 0.04 versus 0.07 ± 0.01 g C m-2 yr-1). MCU increases were widespread, whereas MCR increases were strongest at mid- to high latitudes. Enhanced MCU and CUP increased annual net ecosystem productivity by 0.31

Correcting for spatial and temporal dependence in estimating the economic effect of extreme heat.

Callahan and Mankin argue that extreme heat, measured by maximum 5-day average temperature, has a precise and economically meaningful effect on subnational gross domestic product per-capita growth. We reexamine this claim and find that the reported precision does not survive methods that respect the data's spatial and temporal dependence. Country-preserving permutations and postselection correction substantially widen marginal-effect intervals. The estimates are also highly sensitive to influential countries and years, with exclusions sometimes collapsing the effect or reversing its sign. A hi

Metamorphic sulfur release as a driver of sustained cooling and mass extinction.

The emplacement of large igneous provinces may drive catastrophic volatile release, both directly through volcanic degassing and indirectly through heating of carbon- and sulfur-bearing host sediments. It is broadly assumed that sulfur injection must reach the stratosphere to drive long-term cooling; thus, these indirect metamorphic sulfur emissions have been almost entirely ignored. Here, we demonstrate that plausible carbon and sulfur emissions from contact metamorphism may be sustained long enough to cause centennial-scale sulfate aerosol-driven cooling spikes of several kelvins superimpose

Policy Intervention Towards Ecological Balance Through Reduction of Carbon Footprint in India.

India is experiencing unprecedented urbanisation and industrialisation with consequential carbon emission, which significantly increases the gap between international commitments and reality. This paper explores the recent policy initiatives aimed at achieving promised indicators and engage in recent developments on decarbonisation. The paper further identifies the gap between sustainable development and economic advancement. The paper reflects on the recent carbon-mitigating policies adopted by India. A doctrinal research strategy has been used to address this issue. International, foreign an

Update on the Pathophysiology of Yellow Fever Intoxication.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) remains a major global health threat, driven by climate change, vector expansion, and vaccine shortages. Despite centuries of observation, the pathophysiology of severe yellow fever (YF), specifically the highly lethal "intoxication phase," remains poorly understood. Recent clinical data from the 2016-2019 São Paulo epidemic and advances in animal models have shifted the understanding of YFV from a purely hepatocentric disease to a complex multiorgan syndrome. Emerging evidence indicates that YFV-induced endothelial damage and hypotension trigger profound intestinal is

Trends in vertical wind velocity variability reveal cloud microphysical feedback.

By controlling supersaturation vertical air motion influences how aerosols activate into cloud droplets and ice crystals. This effect is difficult to represent accurately in atmospheric models as they cannot typically resolve the sub-kilometer scale component of wind motion, however it can be addressed by machine learning. Here we apply a generative technique combining storm-resolving simulations, observational and climate reanalysis data, to predict the spatial standard deviation in vertical wind velocity, σW. This analysis reveals significant trends in σW, reaching up to 1%yr-1 in low and mi

Towards verifying and improving estimations of China's CO2 and CH4 budgets using atmospheric inversions.

This paper reviews the application of atmospheric inversions for estimating national CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes with a focus on China. After describing the fundamental principles and methodologies of the technique, we synthesize recent progress in estimating China's CO₂ and CH₄ budgets through atmospheric inversion, and compare these estimates with national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory (NGHGI) reports. The inverted estimates for China's total CO2 and CH4 emissions amount to 8.35 ± 1.39 Pg CO2 a-1 and 60.8 ± 5.9 Tg CH4 a-1, respectively, in the last decade, which are in general consistent with NGHGIs

Microbial Life History Mediates the Drought-Induced Decrease in Wood Decomposition in Subtropical Forests.

Progressive intensification of drought regimes worldwide threatens wood decomposition - a critical biogeochemical process in forest carbon cycling. However, the interactions between microbial strategies, wood traits and microclimate in regulating wood decomposition remain poorly understood under drought conditions. In a throughfall exclusion experiment (control 35% and 70% rainfall reduction) across 12 tree species, we found that drought-induced reductions in wood CO2 efflux rates were primarily driven by wood traits (density and carbon reduction) and shifts in fungal K/r-strategies. Coarse wo

Salmonellosis outbreak archive in China: data collection and assembly.

Infectious disease outbreaks transcend the medical and public health realms, triggering widespread panic and impeding socio-economic development. Considering that self-limiting diarrhoea of sporadic cases is usually underreported, the Salmonella outbreak (SO) study offers a unique opportunity for source tracing, spatiotemporal correlation, and outbreak prediction. To summarize the pattern of SO and estimate observational epidemiological indicators, 1,134 qualitative reports screened from 1949 to 2023 were included in the systematic review dataset, which contained a 506-study meta-analysis data

Future increased risk from extratropical windstorms in northern Europe.

European windstorms cause socioeconomic losses due to wind damage. Projections of future losses from such storms are subject to uncertainties from the frequency and tracks of the storms, their intensities and definitions thereof, and socio-economic scenarios. We use two storm severity indices applied to objectively identified extratropical cyclone footprints from a multi-model ensemble of state-of-the-art climate models under different future socio-economic scenarios. Here we show storm frequency increases across northern and central Europe, where the meteorological storm severity index more t…

Structure-Based Design of Diagnostics and Vaccines for Lyme Disease.

Changes in climate have increased the geographical range of insect vectors responsible for the transmission of several diseases. Lyme disease, caused by the bacterial pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, has become recognized as the most prevalent arthropod-borne infection in the USA. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. As yet, there are no commercial vaccines available that effectively provide protection against Lyme disease. Vaccination strategies involving use of subunit vaccines developed in many laboratories have been found to be less efficient in protect

Ticks, Human Babesiosis and Climate Change.

The effects of current and future global warming on the distribution and activity of the primary ixodid vectors of human babesiosis (caused by Babesia divergens, B. venatorum and B. microti) are discussed. There is clear evidence that the distributions of both Ixodes ricinus, the vector in Europe, and I. scapularis in North America have been impacted by the changing climate, with increasing temperatures resulting in the northwards expansion of tick populations and the occurrence of I. ricinus at higher altitudes. Ixodes persulcatus, which replaces I. ricinus in Eurasia and temperate Asia, is p

Ozone chemistry in western U.S. wildfire plumes.

Wildfires are a substantial but poorly quantified source of tropospheric ozone (O3). Here, to investigate the highly variable O3 chemistry in wildfire plumes, we exploit the in situ chemical characterization of western wildfires during the FIREX-AQ flight campaign and show that O3 production can be predicted as a function of experimentally constrained OH exposure, volatile organic compound (VOC) reactivity, and the fate of peroxy radicals. The O3 chemistry exhibits rapid transition in chemical regimes. Within a few daylight hours, the O3 formation substantially slows and is largely limited by
